Valheim Armor Guide: Complete Progression Path
Armor is your primary defense in Valheim, reducing incoming damage from enemies, falls, and environmental hazards. Each armor set is tied to a specific biome and crafting tier, creating a natural progression path as you explore further from spawn.
Early Game (Meadows & Black Forest)
You start with Rag Armor crafted from basic Leather Scraps. Upgrade to Leather Armor as you hunt deer, then push into the Black Forest for Troll Leather (light, with a valuable +25% sneak bonus) or Bronze Armor (heavier but more protective). Troll Leather remains viable well into the mid game for stealth builds.
Mid Game (Swamp through Mountain)
The Swamp unlocks two paths: Iron Armor for raw defense, or Root Armor for archers (pierce resistance + bow skill bonus). In the Mountains, Wolf Armor provides cold resistance and high armor, while Fenris Armor suits unarmed/speed builds with its unique movement bonus.
Late Game & Endgame
Padded Armor from the Plains is the first truly high-armor set. The Mistlands brings Carapace Armor with even higher values, and the Ashlands introduces Flametal Armor — the strongest set in the game. Each tier requires materials only found in its respective biome.
Choosing Your Armor
Consider your playstyle: heavy armor offers maximum protection but slows movement by 5%, while light sets like Troll Leather and Fenris sacrifice defense for mobility and special bonuses. Always upgrade your armor at the workbench or forge — each level adds significant defense. Don't forget capes for elemental resistance and accessoriesfor additional stat bonuses.
