- Bring
Fire Resistance Barley Wine: almost all of his damage is Fire, and his aura stops rain, so you get no Wet protection. - Fight in melee with a
Silver Sword or Frostner; arrows are nearly useless against his Very resistant Pierce. - Collect 5
Fuling Totems from Fuling Villages and outposts, then search Plains coastlines for his stone-finger altar. - Use the stone pillars as cover and back off past 10 meters when his right fist glows blue.
- Sprint away when he dies: his death explosion can kill you.
What Makes Yagluth So Intimidating
Yagluth is the fifth boss in Valheim, and the hardest part of the fight is finding him. This ancient
Fuling king claws his way out of the ground as a half-skeletal torso wearing a crown. His Forsaken Altar sits somewhere in the Plains, marked by four massive stone fingers and a thumb reaching skyward.
His environment aura
The moment you summon him, the sky turns dark and rain stops. You cannot rely on the Wet debuff for natural fire resistance, so every point of fire protection must come from your own preparation. His attacks are almost entirely Fire-based and will melt an unprepared Viking.
The good news: once you understand his three attacks and bring the right consumables, Yagluth is one of the more predictable bosses. Veterans say he is far easier to kill than to locate.

How to Find Yagluth's Altar
His Vegvisir runestone has one of the lowest spawn rates of any boss locator. These runestones only appear next to Stonehenge-like stone circles in the Plains, and even then the Vegvisir may simply not be there.
Search by boat
- Sail the coastline of every Plains biome you find: the tall stone pillars are visible from the water.
- Use Moder's Forsaken Power for favorable winds.
- Bring
Portal materials to set up waypoints on each new island. - Check small Plains islands too: the altar can spawn on ones you might otherwise skip.
Many players find the altar itself before ever locating a Vegvisir, often with a runestone right next to it. Some have searched for a real-world week, so load a
Longship with supplies and island-hop systematically.
How to Get 5 Fuling Totems
Summoning Yagluth requires 5 Fuling Totems placed on his Forsaken Altar. Where to find them:
- Fuling Villages: the most reliable source. Each Bonfire has a 50% chance of a totem nearby, often on wooden stake platforms that glow purple and stand out at night.
- Fuling Outposts: the smaller stone guard towers sometimes hold a guaranteed totem and only have 3-4 Fulings guarding them.
Fuling Berserkers: 10% drop chance, but risky to fight solo without fully upgraded gear.- Stonehenge center chests: a small 2.8% chance.
The grab-and-run trick
Holster your weapons while running through camps, since you move faster with them put away. Sprint in, grab the totem off its pedestal and run before the Fulings catch up. Interact with the totem before destroying its pedestal, or it won't drop.

Understanding Yagluth's Three Attacks
Yagluth has exactly three attacks, and reading them is the entire fight. Each has a distinct tell based on which hand he raises. Damage and cooldowns are in the table above.
The Beam (10-40 meters)
He takes a deep breath, then fires a stream of 20 fiery projectiles in a roughly 40-meter line, slowly rotating to track you. It inflicts both Burning and Lightning. It looks terrifying but is the easiest to dodge: sprint perpendicular to his facing, or duck behind a stone pillar.
The Meteors (within 30 meters)
His left fist glows red, then 10 burning stones rain down, each with a 5-meter explosion. This is his most dangerous ranged attack. Meteors fall from behind him at an angle, so the safest spots are directly behind Yagluth or behind a pillar on the opposite side.
The Nova (within 10 meters)
His right fist glows blue, then he slams the ground in a 10-meter explosion. Blue fire lingers afterward and keeps burning. You can block or dodge the slam, but not the lingering fire. This is the attack that kills careless melee fighters.
“The hardest part about Yagluth isn't beating him. It's finding him. Once you're standing at that altar with your totems in hand, the fight is almost the easy part.

Weapon Choice: Frostner vs Silver Sword
This is the big community debate. Yagluth takes normal damage from Blunt, Slash, Frost and Spirit, so both weapons get full value from every point of damage. The comparison below shows their stats.
Silver Sword: the faster kill
At quality 4 it deals 138 total damage per swing against Frostner's 113, and its secondary thrust deals 3x damage. With a high Swords skill it kills Yagluth faster.
Frostner: crowd control
Massive knockback and a slow effect buy breathing room when Fulings wander into the fight. Its vertical secondary attack hits higher, which helps against his elevated torso.

The verdict
Bring both. Use the Silver Sword for damage and switch to Frostner if Fulings crash the fight. Skip
Black Metal weapons here: they cost more stamina per swing, and the
Black Metal Atgeir deals Pierce damage, which Yagluth resists at 0.25x.
Do not try to fight Yagluth with a bow. He has Very Resistant (x0.25) to Pierce damage, so arrows deal almost nothing.
Frost Arrows are the only viable ranged option since their Frost damage is neutral, but even then it takes 200+ arrows and several minutes of kiting. Melee is vastly more efficient.
Essential Crafting Recipes
Step-by-Step Solo Fight Strategy
- 1
Prepare the Arena
Before summoning Yagluth, clear all Fulings from the area around the altar. Place a Workbench nearby to suppress mob spawns. Flatten the terrain with a
Hoe so you can move freely without getting caught on uneven ground. Consider placing a portal on a raised platform nearby for easy access. Start the fight in the morning with a full Rested buff. Drink your Fire Resistance Barley Wine and activate Bonemass Power right before placing the totems. - 2
Get Free Damage During the Spawn Animation
After placing all 5 Fuling Totems and activating the altar, Yagluth slowly breaks through the ground. He cannot move or attack during this animation. Sprint in and unload your strongest attacks. You can typically chip off 10-15% of his health before the fight truly begins. Use your weapon's secondary attack for maximum burst damage during this window.
- 3
Use the Stone Pillars as Cover
The stone finger pillars around the altar are your best friends. Position yourself so a pillar is between you and Yagluth whenever he begins a ranged attack. Meteors will hit the pillar instead of you, and the Beam cannot pass through them. Lead Yagluth around a pillar in a circle: attack from behind, then retreat behind the pillar when he telegraphs an attack. Be aware that pillars can be damaged and eventually destroyed if the fight runs long.
- 4
Read His Tells and Punish the Openings
Watch his hands. Left fist glowing red means Meteors: get behind a pillar or behind Yagluth himself. Right fist glowing blue means Nova: back away beyond 10 meters immediately to avoid the slam and lingering fire. Deep breath means Beam: sidestep or use pillar cover. After each attack, Yagluth has a recovery window. Sprint behind him and land 1-2 full combos, then retreat. The sweet spot is staying near his spine and tail, constantly circling as he rotates toward you.
- 5
Manage Your Resources and Stay Patient
Never drain your stamina completely. Always keep enough to dodge or sprint away from a Nova. Pop
Medium Healing Meads when your health dips below half. If your Fire Resistance Barley Wine timer is running low (it lasts 600 seconds), disengage briefly and drink another. The fight typically takes 5-10 minutes with melee weapons, so one Fire Resistance potion should cover most of it, but always bring a backup. - 6
Run Away When He Dies
This catches many first-timers off guard. When Yagluth dies, he explodes in a burst of flames. If you're standing right next to him when the killing blow lands, especially if your Fire Resistance has expired, this death explosion can kill you. As soon as you see his health reach zero, sprint away from his body. Wait a few seconds for the flames to dissipate, then collect your 3 Torn Spirits and the Yagluth Trophy.
Yagluth's Rewards and What They Unlock
Every kill drops 3 Torn Spirits and the
Yagluth Trophy. A Torn Spirit crafts the Wisp Fountain at a Stonecutter (10 Stone + 1 Torn Spirit), which attracts
Wisps at night. You need Wisps to push through the fog of the Mistlands, so one kill covers three fountains.
His Forsaken Power
One of the best in the game. Activated at the sacrificial stones, it lasts 300 seconds and grants:
- Lightning resistance
- +25 Farming
- +10% to all damage types (Blunt, Slash, Pierce, Chop, Pickaxe, Fire, Frost, Lightning, Poison and Spirit)
World changes
- Disables "The horde is attacking" (Fuling raids on your base).
- Enables the "What's up Gjall?!" and "They sought you out" events.
- Fulings start spawning at night in the Meadows, Black Forest and Mountains.
- Haldor starts selling
Eggs for 1,500
Coins, and the Bog Witch unlocks the
Grasslands Herbalist Harvest for 160 Coins.
Fire Resistance Barley Wine is the single most important item for this fight. Without it, Yagluth's fire-based attacks will melt your health in seconds, even through Padded Armor. The wine grants Resistant vs Fire for 600 seconds (10 minutes) and is brewed from 10 Barley and 10 Cloudberries at a Mead Ketill, then fermented for 2 in-game days to produce 6 wines. Brew a batch well before the fight.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Bonemass Power instead of Fire Resistance Barley Wine?
They serve different purposes and ideally you should use both. Bonemass Power reduces physical damage (Blunt from meteors and the Nova slam), while Fire Resistance Barley Wine reduces fire damage, which is the majority of Yagluth's output. If you could only pick one, take the Barley Wine. But stacking both gives you the best survivability.
What happens if I die during the fight? Does Yagluth despawn?
Yagluth will remain spawned and keep whatever health he had when you died. You can return, re-engage, and continue the fight. However, recovering your tombstone in the Plains while a boss is active can be extremely dangerous, especially if Fulings have respawned nearby. A nearby portal is essential insurance.
Is there a cheese strategy for Yagluth?
Several exist but have been nerfed over time. You can dig a trench near the altar and use a Harpoon to drag Yagluth into it, trapping him so he can't move. From there, you can shoot Frost Arrows from a safe distance, though this takes 200+ arrows and about 7 minutes due to his Pierce resistance. Another approach is building a pit covered with floor tiles and letting bonfires slowly burn him from below. These methods work but the legitimate melee fight is honestly faster and more reliable once you know his patterns.
Can I fight Yagluth again for more Torn Spirits?
Yes. Like all bosses in Valheim, Yagluth can be summoned and defeated as many times as you want, provided you have 5 Fuling Totems each time. Each kill drops 3 Torn Spirits. Since each Wisp Fountain requires only 1 Torn Spirit, a single kill gives you enough for three fountains.
Why does the sky turn dark when I summon Yagluth?
Yagluth has an environment aura that forces darkness and stops rain. This is a deliberate game mechanic to prevent players from using the Wet debuff as free fire resistance. It means all your fire protection must come from consumables, specifically Fire Resistance Barley Wine.
