- Read the Vegvisir at the spawn circle to mark his altar, then place 2
Deer Trophy on it. - Bring a
Crude Bow and
Flinthead Arrow, three foods, a
Wood Shield and the Rested buff. - Fight from 10-15 meters and sidestep the Lightning beam; sprint away when he rears up.
- His 3
Hard Antler craft the
Antler Pickaxe, your key to
Copper and
Tin. - Killing him makes
Greydwarfs spawn in the Meadows at night, so fence your base first.
Why Eikthyr Matters More Than You Think
Most players leave Valheim's first boss thinking it was a tutorial, and in raw difficulty they are right. Eikthyr has little health and low-damage attacks. What most guides skip is that killing him changes your world for good.
What his death changes
- Greydwarfs start spawning in the Meadows at night.
- The raid "Eikthyr rallies the creatures of the forest" is disabled, replaced by the nastier "The forest is moving...".
Why you still have to kill him
He drops 3 Hard Antler, the material for the Antler Pickaxe. Without it you cannot mine
Stone, Copper or Tin, so he gates the whole metal progression. Prepare properly, not because you might lose, but because a smooth first kill sets the pace for your run.
Finding and Summoning Eikthyr
When you first spawn, look for the glowing Vegvisir runestone by the Sacrificial Stones at your starting location. Interact with it to mark Eikthyr's Forsaken Altar on your map. The altar is always in a Meadows biome, usually close to spawn.
Getting Deer Trophies
You need 2 Deer Trophy on the altar.
Deer drop one 50% of the time, so a handful of kills is enough. Deer bolt at the first sign of danger, so:
- Use a Crude Bow.
- Crouch and approach from downwind.
- Aim for the head: one Flinthead Arrow often drops them.
Do not rush the summon. He can be re-summoned as often as you like with 2 more trophies, so there is no penalty for waiting until you are properly equipped and fed.
Before you summon Eikthyr, make sure you have the Rested buff active. Sit by a fire with a roof over your head until you see it. Rested gives you +50% health regeneration and +100% stamina regeneration, which is an enormous advantage in any early fight. Many new players skip this and then struggle with stamina management during the battle.
Recommended Gear and Preparation
You do not need anything fancy, but preparation turns a scrappy fight into a controlled takedown.
Armor
Craft full leather at a
Workbench. At quality 1 the set gives 7 armor:
Leather Helmet: 2 armor, 6
Deer Hide
Leather Tunic: 2 armor, 6 Deer Hide
Leather Trousers: 2 armor, 6 Deer Hide
Deer Hide Cape: 1 armor, 4 Deer Hide + 5
Bone Fragments
That is 22 Deer Hide and 5 Bone Fragments in total. Quality 2 doubles the set to 14 armor, but needs a level 3 Workbench plus more hide and Bone Fragments per piece.
Weapons
The Crude Bow with Flinthead Arrow is the safest choice, because it keeps you at a distance. Flinthead Arrow hits 5 harder than
Wood Arrow for little extra effort; note that it needs a level 2 Workbench.

For melee, the
Flint Spear is excellent. It is one-handed, so it pairs with a Wood Shield, and its throw deals 1.5x damage for some ranged flexibility. A
Flint Axe also works well. The
Club is the weakest pick, simply because its base damage is so low.
Food
Eat three different foods before the fight. The classic early combination:
That lifts you from the base 25 HP to around 85-100 HP with a decent stamina bar. Never fight a boss on an empty stomach; this advice holds from Eikthyr to the last boss.

Eikthyr's Attack Patterns Explained
Eikthyr has exactly three attacks, all with obvious wind-ups and generous cooldowns (see the stats table). His summoning aura forces darkness and stops rain, but that is purely cosmetic.
Antler Swipe (melee)
A 25-degree antler sweep with 4.5 meters of reach, triggered when you are within 4 meters. It is his most frequent attack. Bow users should rarely see it; in melee, dodge to the side when he lowers his head.
Charge Beam (ranged)
Used when you are within 15 meters but outside melee range. He backs up, rears back with glowing antlers, then fires a Lightning beam in a wide fan that applies the Lightning status. Sidestep, block, or duck behind a stone pillar at the altar. The long cooldown leaves a big safe window afterward.
Stomp (AoE)
Triggered within 6 meters. He stands fully upright and slams the ground, sending a 10-meter Lightning shockwave outward. When he rears up, sprint or roll away. It is his rarest attack.
The key insight
Stay at 10-15 meters and shoot. You then only need to watch for the Charge Beam, and its 25-second gap is enough for 5-8 arrows between dodges.
“Eikthyr is not dangerous because of his damage. He is dangerous because he teaches you to disrespect Valheim's bosses. Every boss after him will punish overconfidence.
Step-by-Step Fight Strategy
- 1
Prepare Before Summoning
Eat all three foods and get Rested. Equip the Crude Bow and Flinthead Arrow, with your backup melee weapon and shield on the hotbar. Stand about 15 meters from the altar before placing the Deer Trophy.
- 2
Open With Ranged Attacks
Start shooting as soon as he spawns; the first shot often gets bonus damage because he is not yet in combat. Circle-strafe at 10-15 meters and use the stone pillars as cover when he winds up the beam. A fully drawn Crude Bow with Flinthead Arrow hits for around 30, so expect roughly 17 arrows.
- 3
Dodge His Attacks
When he rears up for the Stomp, sprint until you are beyond 10 meters. When he winds up the beam, sidestep or roll; it does not track after firing. If he closes to melee, block the Antler Swipe and roll backward to regain distance. Rolls have invincibility frames.
- 4
Use the Environment
His AI struggles to path around the altar pillars, so kite him in circles for free shots. He knocks down trees while chasing you, and falling trees can damage him, so the treeline gives bonus damage. He will not actively attack player structures, so a small shelter near the altar is a safe place to recover.
- 5
Collect Your Rewards
He drops 1
Eikthyr Trophy and 3 Hard Antler. Take the trophy to the Sacrificial Stones at spawn to unlock his Forsaken Power, then craft the Antler Pickaxe at your Workbench.
A common mistake is fighting Eikthyr with the Club. He has no Blunt resistance, but the Club's base damage is the lowest of any early weapon, so the fight drags on. If you have been leveling Clubs on Greylings, switch to a bow, Flint Spear or Flint Axe for this fight.
Eikthyr's Drops and What They Unlock
His drops matter more than the fight itself.
Eikthyr Trophy and Forsaken Power
Mount the trophy at his Sacrificial Stone in the spawn circle. His power cuts stamina use for running, jumping and swimming by 60% for 5 minutes, which makes it superb for exploration. Each player's power has a 20-minute cooldown, so a group that staggers activations can stay buffed while traveling.
Hard Antler and the Antler Pickaxe
The Antler Pickaxe costs 1 Hard Antler and 10
Wood at a level 1 Workbench, so one kill makes 3 pickaxes, handy for groups. It mines:
- Stone,
Copper Ore and
Tin Ore - Muddy Scrap Piles
- Abyssal Barnacles
It cannot be upgraded but repairs free at any Workbench. It is the weakest pickaxe in the game, yet enough for everything until you craft a
Bronze Pickaxe.

What Eikthyr Unlocks
World Changes After Eikthyr
Defeating Eikthyr is a point of no return. Know these changes before you commit.
Greydwarfs in the Meadows
Greydwarfs start spawning in the Meadows at night. They are only 0-star, so not a serious threat, but they harass you while you work after dark. Fence your base if you have not already.
New raid event
"Eikthyr rallies the creatures of the forest", a fairly tame raid of basic creatures, is disabled. In its place, "The forest is moving..." becomes possible (if
The Elder is still alive). It sends Greydwarf,
Greydwarf Brute and
Greydwarf Shaman at your base, a real step up, so add some basic defenses.
Valheim uses boss kills to raise world difficulty to match your power. In practice, if you have leather armor and a weapon you are comfortable with, you are ready.
Lore and Norse Mythology
Eikthyr references Eikthyrnir, the stag that stands atop Valhalla in Norse legend. In Valheim he is a fallen Forsaken whose "antlers are branches of iron" that "crack the rocks and bring down mountains."
When you mount his trophy, he speaks: "So you were my death? You look so small and soft... Tell Odin he may have broken this form but the wilderness will never submit to his rules." It is a fitting introduction to the old world pushing back against your intrusion.
Meadows runestones also mention a "Horned One", believed to be Eikthyr: "Fear the Horned One and spare his kin." Since you must kill his kin, the Deer, to summon him, there is a grim irony built into the encounter.
Eikthyr FAQ
Can I fight Eikthyr multiple times?
Yes. You can re-summon him as often as you like with 2 Deer Trophy each time. He always drops 3 Hard Antler and 1 Eikthyr Trophy.
Does Eikthyr scale with more players?
Yes. In multiplayer, bosses gain additional HP based on the number of nearby players. With four players, the fight takes longer but is still very manageable since you can spread his attention across the group.
What is the best weapon against Eikthyr?
The Crude Bow with Flinthead Arrow is the safest and most effective option, because the range lets you avoid most of his attacks. For melee, the Flint Spear or Flint Axe are solid. The Club works but its low base damage makes the fight slow.
Is Eikthyr weak to any damage type?
No. He has no weaknesses or resistances to combat damage; every type, including Blunt and Spirit, hits him normally. Only Chop and Pickaxe damage do nothing. Pick the weapon you are best with, ideally a bow for safety.
Will Eikthyr destroy my base?
No. Unlike later boss events, Eikthyr does not actively target player structures. His attacks can incidentally damage buildings if you fight near them, but he will not go out of his way to demolish your base. You can even exploit this by fighting from inside a small structure, though his antlers can clip through walls.
How long does the Eikthyr Forsaken Power last?
Eikthyr's power lasts 300 seconds (5 minutes) and reduces run, jump, and swim stamina usage by 60%. It has a 20-minute cooldown. This is one of the best powers in the game for exploration and travel, and many players keep it active well into the mid-game.
