Why The Queen Is Valheim's Hardest Boss
The Queen is, without question, the most demanding boss fight in Valheim. She has a massive 12,500 HP pool, hits like a longship at full sail, and constantly spawns waves of Seekers and Seeker Broods to overwhelm you while you try to chip away at her health. Unlike every other boss in the game, she must be fought inside a dungeon, the Infested Citadel, which means fog, tight spaces, and zero room for error.
What makes this fight truly brutal is not any single attack. It is the combination of everything happening at once: her teleporting across the arena, poison spit spawning broods, constant add pressure, and the fact that if you stop dealing damage for even a few seconds, she starts regenerating health. Veterans will tell you this fight rewards preparation over mechanical skill. If you show up with the right gear, consumables, and a solid plan, she is very beatable. Show up underprepared, and you will die eight times before she hits half health.
Finding and Accessing the Infested Citadel
Before you can fight The Queen, you need to find her. The Infested Citadel is a unique dungeon found in the Mistlands, and its location is revealed by Vegvisirs inside Infested Mines. Look for runestones as you explore mines, and one will eventually point you to the nearest Citadel.
The Citadel entrance is a large Black Marble structure built by the Dvergr, sealed behind a runic vault door. To open it, you need a Sealbreaker, which is crafted at a Galdr Table from 9 Sealbreaker Fragments. These fragments are found sealed in glass cases throughout Infested Mines. You will need to explore multiple mines to collect all nine. The Sealbreaker is not consumed on use and can be teleported through portals, so you only need to craft it once.
The Citadel interior is a tall, multi-level arena crisscrossed with staircases leading up to the Hive Seat at the top. The Queen roams freely inside before you aggro her, so she could be on any floor when you first enter. This is important: the entrance alcove is completely safe from all of her attacks. Understanding Her Attack Patterns
The Queen's attacks unlock progressively as her health drops, which means the fight gets harder the longer it goes. At the start, she only has her Slap and Pierce AoE, both on 4-second cooldowns. The Slap swings one arm in a massive 145-degree arc covering 10 meters in front of her. The Pierce AoE stabs all four arms into the ground in a 4.5-meter radius. Both of these are close-range attacks, and dodging them is straightforward if you keep your distance.
Once she drops below 90% health, she gains the ability to teleport by burrowing into the ground and emerging elsewhere in the Citadel. This is primarily an annoyance, but it becomes dangerous if she teleports upstairs and starts regenerating health while you cannot find her. Below 80%, she unlocks her Spit attack, firing 20 poison projectiles in a spread pattern. Each projectile has a 30% chance of spawning a Seeker Brood on impact. This is arguably her most dangerous ability because it floods the arena with adds.
Her Bite comes online below 70% HP, adding 140 Pierce and 100 Poison damage in a lunge. This is where Poison Resistance Mead becomes essential. Below 60%, she gains Rush, a charging slash attack that covers over 16 meters. At this stage, every attack she has is active and the arena is likely swarming with Seekers. This is the phase where most players die.
Here is the single most important mechanic to understand: if The Queen is not taking damage, she regenerates health. This means every second you spend killing adds instead of hitting her is a second she is healing. Keeping a damage-over-time effect like fire on her at all times is the key to preventing this.

Best Weapons for The Queen
Your weapon choice matters enormously here. The Queen resists Pierce damage at half effectiveness and is completely immune to Spirit damage, so leave the Porcupine, bows, and crossbows at home. She takes full damage from Blunt, Slash, Fire, Frost, Lightning, and Poison.
The Staff of Embers is the standout weapon for this fight and arguably the one it was designed around. It deals 120 Blunt and 120 Fire damage at base quality, fires in an arc with AoE splash, and applies a burn DoT that prevents The Queen from regenerating. The fire also makes her easier to track through fog. It costs 35 Eitr per cast (less at higher Elemental Magic skill). Craft it at the Galdr Table with 20 Yggdrasil Wood, 4 Surtling Cores, and 16 Refined Eitr. Upgrade it to at least Level 2 before attempting this fight, and bring a backup weapon because durability is a real concern in longer fights.
For melee, the Mistwalker is the best one-handed option. It deals primarily Slash damage with a fast attack speed that lets you get two clean hits between her attacks. The Krom two-handed sword has a devastating secondary attack, but you need to learn the timing carefully. The Demolisher is excellent for AoE add clearing and can hit The Queen through walls when she is near the entrance alcove. Set Up Your Base Camp
Before entering the Citadel, build a small comfort base right outside the dungeon entrance. Place a portal for quick access to your main base, a bed for setting spawn, a Workbench for repairs, and a fire for the Rested buff. The exterior structure has rooms accessible through a breakable Wood Wall on one side of the staircase. Clear them out and set up camp there. You want the full Rested bonus (23+ minutes of boosted HP and stamina regen) before you walk in.

Enter, Light Up, and Locate Her
Enter the Citadel and immediately place Wisp Torches along the staircases and on each floor. Visibility is your biggest enemy in this fight, so bring plenty. The Queen is roaming somewhere inside. Head up the stairs carefully, placing torches as you go. The top floor has no mist and gives you the best visibility. If you spot her, do not engage until you have torches placed and are on favorable ground.

Activate Bonemass and Engage
Pop your Poison Resistance Mead, activate the Bonemass Forsaken Power, eat your best food, and engage. Open with Staff of Embers to get the burn DoT ticking immediately. Stay on the upper levels where visibility is better. Keep your back to a wall when possible to prevent Seekers from flanking you. Fire two or three staff shots, then reposition. Never stand still.

Manage Adds with Bile Bombs
When The Queen uses Call or Spit, the arena fills with Seeker Broods and Seekers. Do not waste your Eitr killing them individually. Throw Bile Bombs into the cluster. The fire and poison AoE melts groups of Broods in seconds and costs you zero Eitr. This frees you to keep the Staff of Embers focused on The Queen herself. Only switch to the Demolisher if adds are directly on top of you and you need the AoE knockback.

Use the Entrance as a Safe Zone
If your health drops low or you are overwhelmed by adds, retreat to the entrance alcove. The Queen cannot hit you there. Some adds will follow you in, but no new ones spawn until you leave. Use this time to heal, eat fresh food, and drink potions. When The Queen is near the entrance, you can sometimes hit her with the Demolisher AoE through the wall. When you re-emerge, she always does a roar animation first, giving you a free hit window.

Handle the Final Phase (<60% HP)
Below 60%, The Queen has all her attacks active including the Rush charge. Stay at range as much as possible. Keep the fire DoT active to prevent healing. Use the Feather Cape to drop from the upper floor if she corners you. If Bonemass has worn off, use it again. This is the most dangerous phase, so play conservatively, prioritize staying alive over maximum DPS, and trust the fire DoT to do its work. If your staff breaks, switch to Bile Bombs and melee. Co-Op Strategy: Tank and Mage
The Queen becomes significantly more manageable with two players using complementary roles. The tank equips full Carapace Armor, a Mistwalker or Krom, and takes aggro through dodge-rolling near The Queen. The mage stays at range with the Staff of Embers, keeping fire on The Queen at all times. The tank should never try to block her attacks; the block power requirement is around 80-90, which is unrealistic. Dodge-rolling is the only reliable defense.
When she spawns adds, the mage should stop casting at The Queen, wait for the adds to cluster, then fireball the group. The tank can help with adds if stamina allows, and an Atgeir works well for the AoE sweep attack. The mage should not waste Eitr on shielding the tank if the tank is dodging properly. Rewards and What Happens After
Defeating The Queen drops 5 Majestic Carapace and The Queen Trophy. The Majestic Carapace is used to build the Artisan Press (alongside 5 Black Marble and 5 Bronze), which upgrades your Artisan Table to Level 2. This unlocks crafting recipes needed for Ashlands progression, including Ceramic Plates and Shield Cores. The Artisan Table Level 2 is also required to build the Drakkar, the ship that takes you to the Ashlands.
Mounting The Queen Trophy at the Sacrificial Stones grants The Queen's Forsaken Power for 300 seconds: +100% Eitr regeneration, Poison resistance, and zero stamina cost while sneaking. This is an incredible power for mage builds and exploration.
Be aware that defeating The Queen changes world spawning. Seekers will now spawn at night in the Meadows, Black Forest, Swamp, Mountain, and Plains. Seeker Broods and Ticks unlock at night in the Mistlands. The events "They sought you out." and "What's up, Gjall?!" are permanently disabled, replaced by "The undead army marches" and "The dead have been summoned." Additionally, The Bog Witch will now sell Herbs of the Hidden Hills for 180 Coins.

Can I leave the Infested Citadel during the fight?
