How to Defeat The Elder: Strategy, Gear & Preparation
The Elder is Valheim's second boss and your gateway to the Swamp. Here's everything you need to beat the King-in-the-Wood.
Why The Elder Is a Turning Point
The Elder is the second boss in Valheim and, for many players, the first real wall. Eikthyr is a gentle introduction, a glorified deer that teaches you the basics of dodging and attacking. The Elder is something else entirely. This towering, ancient tree-creature lurks deep in the Black Forest, surrounded by Greydwarfs, Trolls, and Skeletons that will happily join the fight if you are not careful. Defeating him is not optional, either. The Swamp Key he drops is the only way to access Sunken Crypts in the Swamp biome, where you will find the Scrap Iron that fuels your entire mid-game progression.
The good news? Once you understand his attack patterns and come prepared with the right gear, The Elder becomes one of the most predictable boss fights in the game. The bad news? Most first-timers walk in underprepared and get absolutely shredded by his vine attack. This guide covers everything: how to find him, how to summon him, what to bring, and the exact strategy that makes this fight almost trivial.

Finding The Elder's Altar
The Elder's Forsaken Altar spawns in Black Forest biomes, and your world can have more than one altar location. To find it, you need to locate a Vegvisir (boss runestone), which reveals the nearest altar on your map. These runestones appear in two places: inside Burial Chambers (the stone dungeons found throughout the Black Forest) and occasionally near ruined stone structures above ground. You can interact with these runestones even at low levels. If enemies are swarming, just sprint in, press E on the runestone, and sprint away.
The altar itself is usually not on your starting island. Be prepared to sail, even if it is just a Raft. Once you arrive, you will recognize the altar by its raised stone platform with four large stone pillars and a central brazier where you place the offering.
How to Get Ancient Seeds
Summoning The Elder requires 3 Ancient Seeds placed on the altar brazier (the inscription reads "Burn their young"). There are two reliable sources. The first and easiest is destroying Greydwarf Nests, those glowing purple spawner structures found throughout the Black Forest. Each destroyed nest drops one Ancient Seed guaranteed. Nests have 100 HP and are weak to Fire (x1.5 damage), but resistant to Blunt and Pierce, so use a Slash weapon or Fire Arrows to take them down quickly.
The second source is Greydwarf Brutes, the large club-wielding Greydwarfs in the Black Forest. They have a chance to drop an Ancient Seed when killed. This is less reliable but means you can farm seeds even without finding nests. Collect more than 3 if you want to fight The Elder multiple times for additional Swamp Keys for co-op partners.
Recommended Gear and Preparation
Here is what separates a smooth Elder fight from a frustrating corpse run: your preparation. The single most important thing you can bring is Fire Arrows. The Elder takes double damage from Fire, making Fire Arrows the most efficient weapon by a wide margin. Craft at least 150, ideally 200, to account for misses and the occasional Greydwarf that wanders in. Each batch of 20 costs 8 Wood, 8 Resin, and 2 Feathers at a level 2 Workbench.
For your bow, the Finewood Bow is the go-to choice. At quality 1, it deals 32 Pierce damage and requires 10 Finewood, 10 Corewood, and 2 Deer Hide at a Workbench. Upgrade it to quality 2 or 3 if possible for extra damage and durability. Bring a second bow as backup or place a sheltered Workbench near the arena so you can repair mid-fight. At this stage of the game, the Finewood Bow only needs a level 1 Workbench to repair.
For armor, fully upgraded Troll Armor is the community consensus and the recommendation here. It provides solid defense with no movement speed penalty, which matters enormously in a fight where repositioning is your primary survival tool. Bronze Armor offers slightly more raw defense but comes with a movement speed penalty that makes dodging vine attacks significantly harder. For a ranged fight, mobility wins. If you want a hybrid approach, a Bronze Helmet has no movement penalty and can be combined with Troll body and legs.
For food, prioritize stamina over HP since you will be constantly drawing your bow and sprinting between pillars. Carrot Soup is excellent for stamina. Pair it with Deer Stew and Queens Jam for a solid balance of HP and stamina. Bring Minor Healing Mead and Minor Stamina Mead as emergency backup. The healing mead requires a Cauldron (10 Tin) and Fermenter (30 Finewood, 5 Bronze, 10 Resin) if you have not set those up yet.

Understanding The Elder's Attacks
The Elder has three distinct attacks, and recognizing each one is the key to taking zero damage during this fight.
Vine Shoot is by far his most dangerous ability. When you are between 15 and 50 meters away, he fires a volley of 25 vines from his hand. Each vine deals 35 Pierce damage. If multiple vines connect, you can go from full health to dead in a single attack. The vines travel at 30 meters per second with a 10-20 degree spread, and he tracks your movement while aiming. This is the attack that kills most new players. The counter is simple: stay behind a pillar. The four stone pillars around the altar are completely indestructible. His vines cannot penetrate them. Peek out, fire your bow, and duck back behind the pillar.
Root Spawn is his area denial ability. He raises an arm and summons 15 hostile Root creatures within a 15-meter radius around your position. These Roots are immobile but attack in melee range and despawn after 18-20 seconds. He can have up to 30 Roots active at once. When you see him raise his arm, immediately relocate to the next pillar. The Roots cannot cover the distance between two pillars, so moving one pillar over puts you completely out of their reach. An important detail: he tracks your movement during the summoning animation. If you start running while he is casting, the Roots will spawn along your path. Wait for the animation to commit, then move.
Stomp is his melee attack, triggered when you are within 3 meters. It deals 60 Blunt damage in a 5-meter radius and has massive Chop and Pickaxe damage (1,000 each), which destroys nearby trees and rocks. If you are running a ranged strategy, you should never see this attack. If he closes the gap, sprint to the opposite side of the arena and re-engage from range.
“The four stone pillars around the altar are your real armor in this fight. They are indestructible, they block every vine volley, and they give you a safe place to draw your bow. Master the pillar rotation and The Elder cannot touch you.
Solo Fight Strategy: Step by Step
- 1
Clear the area before summoning
This is the most overlooked step and the number one reason players fail. Destroy all Greydwarf Nests within a large radius of the altar. Place Workbenches around the perimeter to prevent enemy spawns. Kill any Trolls or Skeleton groups lurking nearby. Clear the area in the morning so you have a full day of daylight for the fight. Place a Bed or Portal nearby but far enough away that The Elder will not destroy it.
- 2
Set up campfires around the arena
Place Campfires in a ring around the altar platform and between the pillars. They serve a dual purpose: The Elder takes fire damage when he walks over them, and Greydwarfs are afraid of fire and will avoid the area. This passive damage adds up over the fight, and keeping Greydwarfs away lets you focus entirely on the boss. Each Campfire costs 5 Stone and 2 Wood.
- 3
Activate Eikthyr Power and eat your best food
Before placing the Ancient Seeds, activate Eikthyr's Forsaken Power for 60% reduced stamina usage over 300 seconds. This is enormous for a bow-focused fight. Make sure your Rested buff is active for additional stamina regeneration. Eat all three food items and hotkey your healing and stamina meads.
- 4
Summon and immediately take cover
Place 3 Ancient Seeds on the altar brazier. The Elder spawns on the platform. Immediately move behind the nearest stone pillar. Do not try to get free shots in while he spawns. He can begin attacking faster than most players expect.
- 5
Peek, shoot, repeat
This is the core loop. Draw your bow behind the pillar, peek out to one side, release the Fire Arrow, and immediately step back behind the pillar. The burning DOT from Fire Arrows continues ticking even while you are in cover. Keep a sliver of stamina in reserve at all times so you can sprint away if needed.
- 6
Rotate pillars when Roots spawn
When he raises his arm to summon Roots, wait for the animation to commit (so the Roots target your current position), then sprint to the next pillar. The Roots are immobile and will despawn in about 18 seconds. Resume shooting from your new pillar. If he closes the distance and you hear the stomp wind-up, sprint to the opposite side of the arena entirely.
- 7
Collect your loot
The Elder drops The Elder Trophy and a Swamp Key (one per player in multiplayer). The Swamp Key unlocks Sunken Crypts in the Swamp biome and can be used unlimited times. Pick up both items and head home to mount the trophy at the Sacrificial Stones for his Forsaken Power.
Alternative: Melee Strategy
While ranged is the safer and more popular approach, a melee strategy is actually viable and can be faster for experienced players. The key weapon here is the Bronze Axe. The Elder is immune to Chop damage, but the Bronze Axe deals 40 Slash damage at quality 1 (up to 55 at quality 4), and its secondary overhead attack deals 60 Slash. Pair it with a Bronze Buckler for parrying. The Elder's Stomp attack has a clear wind-up animation that you can learn to parry consistently. After a successful parry, you can land 3-5 axe swings before needing to reposition.
The biggest danger with melee is the Root Spawn ability. Being surrounded by immobile Roots while trying to dodge a Stomp is a recipe for a quick death. You need to watch for the arm raise and immediately disengage before Roots fill your area. Veterans who have mastered the dodge roll timing can actually negate the Stomp entirely by rolling through it with proper timing. Melee is not recommended for your first attempt, but if you are comfortable with Valheim's parry mechanics, it is a legitimate path that saves you 200 Fire Arrows worth of resources.
The Elder's Rewards
Defeating The Elder unlocks several important progression milestones. The Swamp Key is the most critical. It opens the iron gates on Sunken Crypts found in the Swamp biome. Inside these crypts, you will mine Muddy Scrap Piles for Scrap Iron, which smelts into Iron. Iron is used for an enormous array of upgrades: the Iron Mace, Iron Pickaxe, Iron Armor, Huntsman Bow, and much more. The Swamp Key can be used unlimited times and only needs to be in your inventory the first time you open each crypt door.
The Elder's Forsaken Power grants +60% Chop and Pickaxe damage and +30% health regeneration for 300 seconds. This is one of the best utility powers in the game. Activate it whenever you are doing a major wood harvesting or mining session and you will gather resources dramatically faster.
Defeating The Elder also changes the world in several ways. The "The forest is moving..." event (Greydwarf raids on your base) will stop, replaced by "A foul smell from the swamp..." (Draugr and Skeleton raids). The trader Haldor will also unlock Thunder Stone and Ymir Flesh for purchase, and The Bog Witch will sell Woodland Herb Blend (120 Coins).
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I fight The Elder more than once?
Yes. Like all bosses in Valheim, The Elder can be summoned as many times as you want. Each summon costs 3 Ancient Seeds. He drops a Swamp Key every time (one per player), so this is useful for getting keys for friends who missed the fight.
Do I need the Swamp Key in my inventory to enter Sunken Crypts?
Only the first time you open each crypt gate. After that, the gate stays unlocked and you can enter freely without the key. The key itself can be used unlimited times and is teleportable through Portals.
How many Fire Arrows do I actually need?
With decent aim and the Finewood Bow, 100 arrows is enough to kill The Elder. Bring 150-200 to be safe, especially if it is your first time and you expect some misses. You will not need more than 200 even with poor accuracy.
Is Bronze Armor or Troll Armor better for this fight?
Troll Armor is the better choice for a ranged strategy. It has no movement speed penalty, which is critical for repositioning between pillars. Bronze Armor offers marginally more defense but the movement penalty makes dodging vine attacks harder. If you plan to melee, Bronze Armor with a Bronze Buckler is the way to go.
Does The Elder's Forsaken Power stack with other bonuses?
Yes. The +60% Chop and Pickaxe damage stacks with weapon damage normally. This makes it incredibly useful for farming Finewood, Corewood, and mining Copper and Tin. The power lasts 300 seconds (5 minutes) with a 20-minute cooldown. Many players keep The Elder as their active power even deep into mid-game.
What happens to the world after I beat The Elder?
The "The forest is moving..." event (Greydwarf raids) is disabled. New events unlock: "A foul smell from the swamp..." (Draugr raids, if Bonemass is not yet defeated) and "The ground is shaking." (Troll attacks, if any Troll has died in your world). Greydwarf Brutes and Shamans can also begin spawning at night in Meadows, and Draugr may appear during misty weather across several biomes.
