Key takeaways
  • Bring Frostner if you have it, otherwise an upgraded Iron Mace. She is immune to Fire and Poison and resists Pierce.
  • Use the map table at Hildir's camp to mark all three Smouldering Tombs.
  • Clear every 1-star Skeleton and coffin in the tomb before engaging her.
  • Parry her sword slash; back out of range when she stabs the ground for her Fire Nova.
  • Her Hildir's Brass Chest weighs 200 and cannot go through a regular Portal.

Who Is Brenna?

Brenna is the first of three minibosses from Hildir's Request and the most approachable for players in the early-to-mid game. She is a burning Skeleton with charcoal-black bones, wielding a fiery version of Krom. Her name echoes the Swedish branna, "to burn", and the theme runs through her whole moveset.

Why fight her

She guards the Smouldering Tombs of the Black Forest as part of an optional side quest for the trader Hildir. Every kill drops:

  • Hildir's Brass Chest: return it to Hildir to unlock the first tier of her expanded shop.
  • Brenna Trophy: a decorative light source for your base.

Do not let "miniboss" fool you. With fire on every attack and a room of 1-star Skeletons backing her up, she punishes overconfidence. Bring the right weapon and learn her two attacks, and the fight becomes very manageable.

Finding the Smouldering Tomb

Smouldering Tombs are dungeon variants in the Black Forest. There are exactly three per world, and from outside they look almost identical to Burial Chambers. The only way to tell is to enter: the location name reads "Smouldering Tomb".

Use Hildir's map table

  1. Find Hildir in the Meadows. Like Haldor, she has 10 possible locations but only one is active per world.
  2. Walk up to the map table in front of her and press E to "register chest locations".
  3. Every Smouldering Tomb, Howling Cavern and Sealed Tower is now marked on your map.

It is an easy detail to miss, and it saves a huge amount of blind exploring.

Heed Hugin's warning

Stumble into a tomb before meeting Hildir and Hugin warns that it is tougher than you are used to. Take it seriously: every Skeleton inside is 1-star, and coffins keep spawning more as you move through the corridors.

Best Weapons for Brenna

Weapon choice matters more here than most players realize. She takes 50% extra from Blunt and Frost, half damage from Pierce, and nothing at all from Fire or Poison. That rules out your Flint Spear, Fire Arrow and Poison Arrow. Lean into Blunt as hard as you can.

Frostner: best in slot

Frostner hits both of her weaknesses at once and adds Spirit damage on top. If you have Silver and have reached the Mountain, crafting it first is the single best preparation you can make.

Iron Mace: best before the Mountain

Available as soon as you process Swamp iron, it exploits her Blunt weakness cleanly. At quality 3 or 4 it hits for 67-73 Blunt per swing, which is more than enough.

Other options

  • Bronze Mace: works in a pinch for an early attempt, but the fight takes noticeably longer.
  • Stagbreaker: pure Blunt AoE, but its slow wind-up leaves you exposed in tight corridors.
  • Silver Sword: its Spirit damage is only neutral against her, so any Blunt weapon outperforms it.

Brenna is a skeleton first and a fire hazard second. Treat the Blunt weakness as your primary exploit, and the Frost weakness as a bonus if you have the gear for it.

Step-by-Step Fight Strategy

  1. 1

    Prepare Before Entering

Get Rested before entering: if base is far, place a Campfire and sit for about 20 seconds. Eat your best food, equip your Blunt weapon and shield, and activate the Bonemass power if you have it.

  2. 2

    Clear the Tomb First

Work through the tomb room by room and kill every 1-star Skeleton. Destroy the coffins that keep spawning new ones, and snipe sleeping enemies with a bow for the stealth bonus. Brenna waits in a distinctive room, so you will know it when you see it. Do not rush.

  3. 3

Engage Brenna: Read Her Two Attacks

Brenna has exactly two attacks. Her sword slash is a 90-degree horizontal sweep she can repeat every 3 seconds at close range; it can be blocked and parried. Her Fire Nova comes every 10 seconds: she stabs the sword into the ground and a 3-meter fire explosion follows. When you see the stab, back away immediately.

  4. 4

The Core Loop: Parry, Strike, Retreat

Stay close enough to bait the slash, parry, land two or three hits, then back off. When she winds up the Nova, leave the 3-meter radius. Do not try to roll through it: if you are still inside the area, you take the damage anyway. Use the Nova downtime to drink a Medium Healing Mead if needed, then close back in.

  5. 5

    Collect Your Rewards

Pick up Hildir's Brass Chest and the Brenna Trophy. The chest weighs 200 and cannot go through a regular Portal (a Stone Portal can carry it). You will likely want the Megingjord from Haldor (950 Coins) to carry it, and a boat if Hildir is on another island.

Rewards: What Does Defeating Brenna Unlock?

Returning Hildir's Brass Chest unlocks the first tier of her shop. Most of it is cosmetic clothing:

The "She's hot on your tail!" raid

Turning in the chest also unlocks a raid where Brenna invades your base with Skeletons. Since she drops a trophy every time, the raid doubles as a way to farm extra Brenna Trophies.

The trophy glows with fire when mounted on an item stand. Decorators often farm several through the raid, because of a known bug where only the first Smouldering Tomb reliably spawns Brenna after her first defeat.

When Should You Fight Brenna?

Brenna is the easiest of Hildir's three minibosses, scaled roughly to the Black Forest and Swamp. You can take her on with Iron gear, and she becomes straightforward with Silver. The real danger is the 1-star Skeletons catching you in the corridors, not Brenna herself.

The sweet spot

The ideal time is right after your first few Sunken Crypts. You will have Iron armor, an Iron Mace and enough combat practice to handle the tomb. Mountain gear makes her trivial, but you miss enjoying the cosmetics during the mid-game, when they feel most rewarding.

No boss gate

Her quest line runs parallel to the main bosses. You do not need to defeat Eikthyr, The Elder or anyone else to enter the tombs. With decent Bronze gear you could try her before the Swamp, though the 1-star Skeletons will hit hard.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I parry Brenna's attacks?

Yes. Brenna's sword slash can be parried with any shield. Timing a parry opens her up for two or three free hits. However, you cannot parry the Fire Nova. When she stabs her sword into the ground, you need to back away from the 3-meter blast radius.

How many Smouldering Tombs are there per world?

There are exactly three Smouldering Tombs per world. You can reveal all their locations by interacting with the map table in front of Hildir. Only one Brass Chest can be turned in to Hildir, so duplicate chests from additional tombs serve no purpose.

Can I teleport Hildir's Brass Chest?

No, it cannot go through a regular Portal. It weighs 200, so you will likely want the Megingjord from Haldor (950 Coins) to carry it, and a boat if Hildir is on another island. A Stone Portal will work if you have one.

Does Brenna spawn in every Smouldering Tomb?

She is supposed to appear in each one. However, there is a known bug where Brenna may not spawn in the remaining tombs after you defeat her in the first one. The community workaround is to wait for the "She's hot on your tail!" raid event or visit a different world to find fresh tombs.

Is Fire Resistance Barley Wine useful for this fight?

It reduces the Fire Nova and the fire part of her sword slash, but it is not essential. The Nova is easy to avoid by backing away, and Medium Healing Mead and good food cover any fire damage you do take. Save the Barley Wine for tougher fights.

What does the Brenna Trophy do?

It is decorative and glows with fire when mounted on an item stand, which makes it a popular base light. It is a guaranteed drop from every Brenna kill, including raid events.
