Why Bows Are the Best Weapon Class in Valheim

Melee weapons improve gradually with skill, but bows transform. At Bow skill 0 you pull the string for a painful 2.5 seconds per shot; at skill 100 it takes 0.5 seconds. Add the 0.8-second minimum fire interval (reached at skill 85) and a high-level archer drops most enemies before they close the gap.

Exponential scaling

Each level gives a bigger boost than the last: level 0 to 1 shaves about 0.7% off draw time, while 99 to 100 removes roughly 3%. That is why veterans say a maxed Finewood Bow with Wood Arrows often beats an unlevelled Draugr Fang with Obsidian Arrows. Rate of fire matters more than per-shot damage.

Rules shared by every bow

  • Two-handed, 1.5 weight, -5% movement speed while equipped
  • Charging the draw increases accuracy, damage and arrow velocity
  • Block to cancel a draw without wasting the arrow
  • 3x backstab multiplier, which makes sneak attacks devastating
Veteran Tip

You do not always need to fully draw your bow. A half-drawn shot on a staggered enemy is far better than a perfect full-draw that arrives after the stagger window closes. At high skill levels, partial draws still deal solid damage and the speed difference is negligible. Also, you can draw a bow while jumping, which means leaping backward out of danger can be more effective than dodge-rolling.

Every Bow Tier Explained

Crude Bow (Meadows)

Your first ranged weapon, available as soon as you build a Workbench. It is wildly inaccurate even at full draw, and its slow 35 m/s arrows need heavy leading on moving targets. It is the cheapest bow to draw by a wide margin.

Use it to learn the basics, hunt your first Deer and start levelling Bow skill. Don't upgrade it past quality 2: you will replace it quickly, and every upgrade costs a Deer Hide.

Finewood Bow (Black Forest)

This is where archery truly starts. Velocity jumps to 50 m/s, a massive accuracy improvement, and it is crafted at a Workbench, so you can rush it before touching Copper. Get early Finewood by walking the coast for Shipwrecks (roughly a 50% spawn chance) and breaking them apart.

Fully upgraded, it is arguably the strongest weapon for its cost in the first three biomes, carrying you through the Meadows, Black Forest and early Swamp.

Huntsman Bow (Swamp, Iron age)

The first Forge bow introduces an underrated mechanic: reduced noise. Most bows make 15 meters of attack noise; the Huntsman Bow makes 4. You can snipe enemies in camps without aggroing everything nearby, which makes it a favorite for safe, controlled progression.

It hits hard enough for everything through the Mountains. The downside is Iron: 20 to craft and 80 in total to reach quality 4, which hurts early in the Swamp.

Draugr Fang (Mountain, Silver age)

The community favorite. Every arrow carries built-in Poison, velocity rises to 60 m/s for laser-like accuracy, and it makes the open, high-visibility Plains feel like a playground. The Poison stacks with Poison Arrows for brutal damage over time.

  • Undead such as the Draugr and Skeleton are immune to Poison, so the bonus does nothing to them.
  • Its faint green glow lights dark areas but makes you slightly more visible while sneaking.
  • It needs Silver and Guck, so you must have explored the Swamp and started mining in the Mountains.

Spinesnap (Mistlands, Eitr age)

A divisive bow. Its pierce plus Spirit damage makes it the hardest-hitting bow before the Ashlands, but the 14 stamina per second draw cost drains you in seconds during long fights. In the Mistlands, Seekers resist Pierce and are immune to Spirit, and the fog limits sightlines.

Its real niche is early Ashlands trips: Charred Warriors are weak to Spirit. Don't count on Spirit everywhere: Skeletons and Draugr take normal Spirit damage, and Trolls, Fulings and Abominations are immune. It is cheap, too: Finewood, Bone Fragments and Refined Eitr, with upgrades needing only Finewood and Bone Fragments.

Ash Fang and its variants (Ashlands)

The Ashlands bow needs Ashwood, Charred Bone, Flametal and Bonemaw Tooth at a level 3 Black Forge. Its Spirit damage starts at 0 and only appears as you upgrade.

What sets it apart is augmenting: at a level 4 Black Forge, an Ash Fang plus 5 Flametal and one gemstone becomes a variant (upgrades cost 5 Flametal and one gemstone per level).

  • Root Fang (Jade): adds 10 Poison and a root effect that holds targets in place, superb for kiting.
  • Storm Fang (Iolite): adds 10 Lightning and chain lightning that scales with attack speed, an area-damage monster at high skill.
  • Blood Fang (Bloodstone): life steal. Most archers rate it the weakest, since good positioning means you shouldn't be taking much damage.

Augmenting resets the upgrade level, so build a fresh Ash Fang specifically for the variant you want.

Nord Bow, Thunderblood Bow and Frostfire Bow (Valheim 1.0)

Valheim 1.0 pushes archery past Ash Fang with a Bloodgold line, all made at a level 4 Black Forge. The Nord Bow is the base: it costs 20 Bloodgold, 10 Timberwood and a Mould: Nord Bow, which you find in Deep North timber halls, granaries and buried memorial chests.

Choosing a Nord Bow variant

Like Ash Fang, the Nord Bow can become a variant, consuming the bow. Each costs 20 Bloodgold plus an essence, and both essences drop from Fallen Warriors (50% chance).

  • Thunderblood Bow (Thunderblood Essence): the highest-pierce bow in the game, with Lightning on top. Pick it for raw damage.
  • Frostfire Bow (Frostfire Essence): trades pierce for heavy Frost plus some Fire. Pick it against pierce-resistant targets, where the elemental damage does most of the work.

Bows have the best skill scaling of any weapon in Valheim. A dedicated archer at skill 85+ fires so fast that most enemies never get close. Distance and speed are life.

Arrow Selection: What to Use and When

Arrow damage is added straight to your bow's pierce before any other calculation, so arrow choice matters enormously. The veteran approach saves thousands of resources over a playthrough.

Everyday shooting

Use Wood Arrows: 8 Wood makes 20, and they are plenty for trash mobs once your skill is decent. Every cheap shot is Bow skill experience, so they make you stronger faster.

Hoard every Feather until the Mountains, then craft Obsidian Arrows in bulk (8 Wood, 4 Obsidian and 2 Feathers per 20 at a level 3 Workbench). They are the single best arrow value in the game.

Specialty arrows for bosses

  • Fire Arrows: for The Elder, who is very weak to Fire.
  • Frost Arrows: the best all-round specialty arrow, since few creatures resist Frost (Skeletons and Abominations are the notable exceptions). The go-to for Bonemass, who is weak to Frost and very resistant to Pierce.
  • Poison Arrows: stack with Draugr Fang's built-in Poison, as long as the target isn't undead.
  • Skip Flinthead, Bronzehead and Ironhead Arrows: their small gain over Wood Arrows isn't worth the cost.

Late-game arrows

From the Ashlands on, arrows rarely feel scarce.

Common Mistake

Fire Arrows are a common noob trap. New players craft hundreds of them because fire sounds powerful, but they become obsolete the moment you can make Obsidian Arrows. Fire is a poor choice in the Swamp, where the Draugr resist it and Bonemass is very resistant, and the pierce component is only 11, which is pathetic. Save your Resin for torches and use Fire Arrows only against The Elder. Beyond that, they are a waste of Feathers.

Common community wisdom

Best Armor for Bow Builds

Root set: the archer's power spike

The Root set (Root Mask, Root Harnesk and Root Leggings) is the biggest power spike for bow builds. Its set bonus adds +15 to Bow skill, for faster draws and better accuracy. It is craftable after the Swamp from Ancient Bark, Root (from Abominations) and Deer Hide, and stays competitive through the Mountains.

Fenris set: mobility

The Fenris set (Fenris Hood, Fenris Coat and Fenris Leggings) suits aggressive, mobile archers. Its speed bonus lets you reposition rapidly, and keeping your distance is worth more than raw armor when your weapon works best at range. If something hits you, you have already made a mistake.

Later on

It becomes personal. Some veterans keep Root armor into the Plains for the Bow bonus; others switch to Padded armor for protection when a Fuling gets close. Choose by how confident you are in your positioning.

Recommended Bow Progression

Mountain/Plains: The community favorite. Poison damage on every shot.
Spinesnap
Mistlands: Spirit damage for Charred Warriors. High stamina cost.
Ash Fang / Variants
Ashlands: Augment to Root Fang or Storm Fang at a level 4 Black Forge.
Nord Bow
Valheim 1.0: Bloodgold, Timberwood and a Mould at a level 4 Black Forge. 100 pierce plus Spirit.
Thunderblood Bow / Frostfire Bow

Advanced Archery Tips and Combat Techniques

Level the skill constantly

Shoot everything from the first hour: saplings, birds, Greylings on the path. Every hit is experience, cheap Wood Arrows mean there's no reason to hold back, and the exponential curve means the sooner you start, the sooner you reach the skill 85 fire-rate cap.

Headshots are mostly a myth

The only creature with a confirmed head hitbox multiplier is the Troll, which is also weak to Pierce. What people mistake for headshots is the 3x backstab bonus on unaware enemies. Approach from downwind, crouch and let fly for triple damage on your opening shot.

Watch durability

At high skill you fire so fast that your bow wears down noticeably in long fights like bosses. Many experienced players carry a backup bow for exactly this reason.

The multi-bow loadout

Many endgame veterans carry several bows, which costs little at 1.5 weight each:

  1. Open with the Huntsman Bow to silently pull one enemy from a group.
  2. Switch to Draugr Fang for sustained Poison on tanky targets.
  3. Use Spinesnap for Spirit damage against Charred Warriors.
  4. Finish with a Thunderblood Bow, Frostfire Bow or Ash Fang variant for raw damage.
Meta Strategy

A solo bow-only playthrough is completely viable from start to finish. The early game through the Black Forest and Swamp is the hardest stretch, where your skill is low and enemies are aggressive in tight spaces. Once you hit the Mountain biome with a decent Bow skill and Root Armor, the power curve completely inverts. Mountains and Plains become easier than the Swamp ever was, and you will wonder why you ever bothered with melee.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best bow in Valheim?

There is no single best bow because it depends on the situation. In Valheim 1.0 the Thunderblood Bow has the highest pierce damage (110 to 134) plus Lightning, while the Frostfire Bow leans on heavy Frost damage for pierce-resistant targets. Among Ashlands bows, Root Fang (augmented Ash Fang) is the strongest for general use thanks to its root proc that pins enemies in place, and Storm Fang is best for groups. Draugr Fang remains competitive at all stages due to its poison stacking. Huntsman Bow is best for stealth. For pure damage-per-resource, a maxed Finewood Bow with Wood Arrows is unbeatable.

Do headshots deal extra damage?

Only against Trolls. Most creatures in Valheim do not have head hitbox multipliers. The big damage numbers people see are from the 3x backstab (sneak attack) multiplier, not from hitting the head. Seeker Soldiers have a weak point on their rear, and Gjalls can be hit in the underbelly, but these are body zones, not headshots.

Should I skip the Huntsman Bow and go straight to Draugr Fang?

It depends on your playstyle. The Huntsman Bow's 4-meter noise radius is uniquely powerful for safe progression through the Swamp and beyond. Draugr Fang requires Silver and Guck, so there is a natural gap where Huntsman fills in. If you already have a maxed Finewood Bow and are racing to Silver, you can skip Huntsman, but you will miss out on the stealth advantage.

Does Draugr Fang poison stack with Poison Arrows?

Yes. The poison damage from Draugr Fang and the poison from Poison Arrows are separate effects that stack, although undead like the Draugr and Skeleton are immune to Poison entirely. However, note that Spinesnap's Spirit damage will overwrite Draugr Fang's Poison if you switch bows mid-fight, because only one bow-applied effect can be active at a time on a target.
