Key takeaways
  • Bring Plains-tier gear or better, Fire Arrows or Campfires for his Fire weakness, and Frost resistance.
  • Leave Frostner at home: Geirrhafa is immune to Frost.
  • Two attacks, Frost Breath and Ice Nova, cannot be blocked. Stay inside 2 meters to shut off Frost Breath and back out past 5 meters for the Nova.
  • Clear the 10-20 Ulv in the cavern before you engage.
  • Returning the Silver Chest to Hildir unlocks a Geirrhafa base raid, so ready your defenses first.

What Is Geirrhafa and Why Should You Care?

Geirrhafa is the second miniboss of Hildir's Request, found deep inside Howling Caverns in the Mountains. He looks like a supersized Cultist with white fur and a black cloak tinged with red, and he turns the regular Cultist's annoyance into a genuinely dangerous encounter.

Why he is so dangerous

  • High health: at 3,700 HP, this is not a one-minute fight.
  • Heavy Frost damage on almost every attack.
  • Tight cavern quarters that limit dodging.
  • Two of his four attacks cannot be blocked or dodged.

Veterans rate him the hardest Hildir miniboss to fight in melee.

Starting the quest

Find Hildir, the trader who spawns in the Meadows. She marks Howling Caverns on your map. The entrance looks like a regular Mountain cave, but Hugin warns you it is more dangerous inside. Expect 10 to 20 one-star Ulv in the tunnels before Geirrhafa's chamber.

Geirrhafa's Attack Patterns: Know What Will Kill You

Two of his attacks can be blocked or parried and two cannot. Mixing them up gets you killed.

Ice Claw (blockable)

His basic melee swipe: 40 Slash plus 60 Frost in a 3-meter arc, used when you are within 1.5 meters. With only a 2-second cooldown he uses it constantly. It can be blocked and parried, making it the safest window for melee fighters.

Ice Claw Double (blockable)

Two swipes in a row, each 60 Slash plus 70 Frost, so up to 260 damage if both land. It has a 10-second cooldown and the same 1.5-meter range. You can block it, but you need solid armor and a good shield to absorb both hits without being staggered.

Frost Breath (unblockable)

A 4-meter cone of frosty mist dealing 100 Frost. The detail most guides miss: it only fires when you are 2 to 6 meters away. Stay closer than 2 meters and he cannot use it at all.

Ice Nova (unblockable, the real killer)

He slams his hands into the ground and sends out three shockwaves over 5 meters, each dealing 90 Frost, so 270 if all three connect. He can use it whenever you are within 7 meters, on a 15-second cooldown. The only counters are getting beyond 5 meters at once or soaking it with health and Frost resistance.

“

Two of Geirrhafa's four attacks cannot be blocked or dodged. If you do not know which two, you are not ready for this fight.

Veteran Viking

Do not fight Geirrhafa in Mountain-tier gear. In Wolf armor with a Silver Sword you will have a miserable time: he hits like a Plains enemy. Bring fully upgraded Plains-tier weapons at minimum, and Mistlands or Ashlands equipment if you have it.

Ranged weapons

  • Spinesnap with Fire Arrows: Fire and Spirit damage ticking together, and Fire triggers his 1.5x weakness.
  • Draugr Fang with Poison Arrows: he takes full Pierce and Poison damage.

Ranged fighting keeps you at medium range, which is exactly Frost Breath territory.

The weapon to avoid

Frostner's Frost damage does nothing here; only its Blunt and Spirit damage land. Swap to your Iron Mace or any non-Frost weapon.

Frost protection and supplies

Frost Resistance Mead lasts 10 minutes and halves incoming Frost damage, which is most of his output. The Wolf Fur Cape and Fenris Coat give the same Resistant rating, and the effects do not stack, so the mead matters most if you wear neither. Also bring:

  • Your best health food, plus stamina food for a long fight with lots of dodging
  • A stack of Medium Healing Mead or Major Healing Mead
  • At least two Frost Resistance Meads if you rely on them

Frost Resistance Mead Recipe

1×Mead Base: Frost Resistance
Frost Resistance Mead (x6)

Fight Strategy: Step by Step

  1. 1

    Clear the Cavern First

Kill every Ulv in the Howling Cavern first: there can be 10 to 20, all one-star. Fighting Geirrhafa with Ulv at your heels is a recipe for disaster. Collect the Fenris Hair and Wolf Fangs, then head for his chamber.

  2. 2

Set Up Campfires at the Entrance

Bring Stone and Wood and place 3 to 5 Campfires in a cluster near the entrance to his room. Campfires deal continuous fire damage to anything standing on them, and Geirrhafa is weak to Fire, so lure him through them repeatedly for free damage.

  3. 3

Drink Frost Resistance Mead and Buff Up

Eat your best food and drink a Frost Resistance Mead before pulling him, unless a Wolf Fur Cape or Fenris Coat already gives you Frost resistance. The mead lasts 10 minutes and halves Frost damage.

  4. 4

Melee Strategy: Stay Close, Dodge the Nova

Fight from under 2 meters, where he cannot use Frost Breath. You only face the Ice Claws (blockable, parryable) and the Ice Nova. When he raises both hands for the Nova, sprint back past 5 meters. Once the three shockwaves finish (about 4.5 seconds), rush back in. Parrying a claw staggers him for free hits.

  5. 5

    Ranged Strategy: Kite Around Pillars

Safer but slower. Use pillars and terrain near the cavern entrance as cover and shoot Fire Arrows to exploit his 1.5x weakness. Kite him around obstacles, out of claw range, and sidestep the narrow (35 degree) Frost Breath cone. Fenris armor's bonus movement speed is invaluable for kiting.

  6. 6

The Cheese Spot: Cave Entrance Step

The entry step into his chamber is a small elevation change he struggles to navigate. Stand on it and shoot from relative safety. He may not follow into the tunnel either, so you can bob in and out of cover between shots.

Rewards: Hildir's Silver Chest

Geirrhafa always drops the Geirrhafa Trophy and Hildir's Silver Chest. The chest weighs 200 and will overburden most players. It cannot go through a standard Wood Portal, so haul it back to Hildir on foot or by boat, or use a Portal Stone if you have one.

Cosmetic unlocks

Returning the chest unlocks a new tier of Hildir's cosmetics, all purely decorative:

Warning: The Geirrhafa Raid Event

Returning the Silver Chest also permanently adds the "You get the chills..." raid to your world. It spawns Geirrhafa himself, 1-2 star Fenrings and a 1-2 star Cultist directly at your base. The raid lasts 90 seconds and can happen in any biome.

It is arguably the most dangerous raid for its tier. The Ice Nova obliterates tamed animals, and many players have lost whole wolf pens to one raid.

The raid triggers when you return the chest, not when you kill Geirrhafa, so you can hold the chest until your base defenses are ready.

Geirrhafa in the Hildir Quest Line

Geirrhafa is the second of three Hildir quest targets:

  1. Brenna (Black Forest, Smouldering Tombs)
  2. Geirrhafa (Mountains, Howling Caverns)
  3. Zil & Thungr (Plains, Sealed Tower)

The quest line is optional side content. Beyond the cosmetics there is no gameplay advantage to completing it.

When to attempt it

The rule of thumb is to clear the main boss of a miniboss's biome first, which means Moder at minimum here. In practice, wait for Plains-tier gear (Black Metal weapons, Padded armor). With Mistlands or Ashlands equipment the fight is much more manageable, though he still commands respect.

Frequently Asked Questions

What level gear do I need for Geirrhafa?

At minimum, fully upgraded Plains-tier gear (Black Metal weapons, Padded Armor). Mountains-tier Silver equipment is technically possible but makes the fight extremely painful. Mistlands or Ashlands gear makes it comfortable. The key is having enough raw damage to whittle down 3,700 HP in a reasonable time while surviving his unblockable attacks.

Can I use Frostner against Geirrhafa?

No. Geirrhafa is immune to Frost, so Frostner's main damage type is wasted and only its Blunt and Spirit damage land. Use an Iron Mace, a Black Metal weapon or anything with Fire instead.

Does killing Geirrhafa trigger the raid event?

No. The "You get the chills..." raid event is only triggered after you return Hildir's Silver Chest to Hildir. You can kill Geirrhafa and hold onto the chest indefinitely without enabling the raid. This lets you prepare your base defenses before turning it in.

Can I teleport Hildir's Silver Chest?

Not through a standard Wood Portal: the chest weighs 200 and is non-teleportable, like metal ores. Use a Portal Stone if you have one, or carry it back to Hildir by boat or on foot.

Is Geirrhafa harder than Brenna?

Most players consider Geirrhafa significantly harder, especially in melee. Geirrhafa has more HP, two unblockable attacks, and fights in tighter cavern spaces. Brenna is a fire-based boss in the Black Forest, which is generally an easier biome to navigate. Geirrhafa is widely regarded as the hardest Hildir miniboss to fight up close.

Can tamed wolves help against Geirrhafa?

They can help with damage, but expect heavy losses. Geirrhafa's Ice Nova is an AoE that hits everything within 5 meters, and it one-shots wolves regardless of star level. If you insist on using wolves, pairing them with a Staff of Protection to absorb some hits is the only viable approach. In most cases, you are better off fighting solo or with human co-op partners.
