Key takeaways
  • The Boar is the only tameable creature in the Meadows and your best renewable source of Boar Meat and Leather Scraps.
  • To tame one, pen it, remove every fire source within about 10 meters, drop berries, Mushrooms or vegetables, and stay out of sight.
  • Breed at least two tamed Boars; piglets need 50 minutes to grow and drop nothing before that.
  • Star ratings double drops: 1, 2 and 4 of each for 0, 1 and 2 stars.
  • Sausages (1 Boar Meat makes 4) are the main reason to keep a farm running into the Mountains.

Why the Boar Matters

The Boar is the first creature most Vikings meet, and it stays useful long after the Meadows. It is the only tameable animal in the starting biome, its drops feed dozens of recipes, and a well-run farm supplies renewable Leather Scraps and Boar Meat indefinitely.

Where to find Boars

Wild Boars belong to the Forest monsters faction and spawn commonly across the Meadows. Look for them in three places:

  • Open Meadows terrain, as regular spawns
  • Boar Runestones, which spawn 1 to 9 Boars as a one-time event
  • Abandoned farms scattered around the Meadows

Behaviour

Boars attack when they spot you: a predictable headbutt charge, then a brief retreat. Once you know the pattern it makes herding them into pens easy.

Wild Boars are also afraid of fire. A Torch, Campfire or any open flame within about 10 meters puts them in a frightened state where they refuse to eat and cannot be tamed. The fear disappears once a Boar is tamed.

Drops and Why They Matter

Every adult Boar drops Boar Meat and Leather Scraps, plus a 15% chance at a Boar Trophy. Quantities double with each star, so a 2-star Boar gives four times the resources of a 0-star (see the table below). That is why experienced players work so hard to find and breed 2-star Boars.

Boar Meat

Cooked on a Cooking Station, Boar Meat is a simple early food. Its real value is as an ingredient in five cooked dishes:

Leather Scraps

Leather Scraps go into your earliest gear and keep appearing through every tier: Rag Armor, the Crude Bow, Flint weapons, Bronze and Iron weapons, the Abyssal Harpoon, Fenris Armor, the Lox Saddle, Ooze Bombs and many building pieces. Bats and Muddy Scrap Piles also give them, but Boars are by far the most accessible renewable source.

Boar Trophy

The trophy can be displayed on an Item Stand or used to program a Ballista to target Boars. It has no other crafting use.

Veteran Tip

Resist the urge to kill every Boar you see near your starting base. Once you clear them out, it can take several in-game days for new ones to respawn. Leave at least two alive near your base so you can tame them early. Veterans often build a pen before they even finish their first shelter.

How to Tame a Boar

  1. 1

Build a pen near wild Boars

Build a small enclosed pen with Roundpole Fences or Stakewalls, with an opening you can seal quickly. Keep it within Workbench range so dropped items do not despawn. Build at least 3 boards high to prevent escape, and consider a roof to protect against raids and Greydwarf attacks.

  2. 2

    Lure the Boar inside

Get close enough for the Boar to aggro on you, then sprint into the pen. The Boar will chase you. Once it is inside, quickly jump out and seal the opening with a fence or wall piece. Wild Boars have a predictable charge-and-retreat pattern that makes this easier than it sounds. If a Boar gets stuck in a corner, just wait for it to move on its own.

  3. 3

    Remove all fire sources

Wild Boars are terrified of fire. Any Campfire, Torch, or other flame within roughly 10 meters of the pen will keep them in a permanent "frightened" state, and frightened Boars will not eat. If your Boar is cowering in a corner and ignoring food, check for nearby fire sources. Place Torches around the outer perimeter of your pen to deter Greydwarfs, but keep them far enough away that the Boar cannot detect them.

  4. 4

    Drop food inside the pen

Boars eat Raspberries, Blueberries, Mushrooms (the red ones), Carrots, Turnips and Onions. They will not eat Yellow Mushrooms. Drop the food within 1 meter of the Boar; it eats one piece at a time. Three pieces cover a full taming cycle under ideal conditions, but drop 5 or 6 in case the process is interrupted.

  5. 5

    Walk away and wait

This is the step most new players get wrong. The Boar must not see you or any enemy. Walk far enough away that it calms down, but stay within about 64 meters so the area stays active: taming only progresses with a player nearby. Yellow hearts mean taming is in progress, and you can sneak up and hover over the Boar to see the exact percentage. The whole process takes about 30 minutes.

  6. 6

    Repeat for a second Boar

You need at least two tamed Boars to start breeding. Build a second small enclosure adjacent to the first (or expand the first one) and repeat the process. Once both Boars are tamed, you can merge them into a shared pen for breeding.

“

Go quietly to them and let them eat of your stock. Roots of the ground are their pleasure.

Boar Runestone

Breeding and Building a Boar Farm

Once you have two tamed Boars, breeding follows a few rules:

  • Both Boars must be fed and not frightened.
  • They must be within 3 meters of each other.
  • No more than 5 Boars can be within a 10-meter radius.

When the conditions are met, pink hearts show love points accumulating. After 3 love points a Boar becomes pregnant, and a piglet appears 1 minute later in a puff of red smoke.

Faster than you expect

Either Boar in a pair can become pregnant, and both can be pregnant at once, so a pair produces piglets twice as fast as many players assume. Piglets take 50 minutes to grow up and drop nothing if killed before then.

Getting past the 5-Boar limit

Breeding stops entirely once 5 Boars are nearby. The popular workaround is an elevated breeder: put the breeding pen on raised Core Wood platforms so newborn piglets drop to a lower area outside the 10-meter radius. The pair keeps breeding while you harvest adults at ground level.

Anchored Boars

Boars tamed at abandoned farms and Runestones keep an anchor to their spawn point. They keep trying to return home, sit in one corner and breed poorly. Breed them once, then kill the originals and keep the offspring: piglets born in your pen have no anchor.

Common Mistake

Never kill piglets: they drop nothing. Wait the full 50 minutes for them to mature. To kill tamed Boars, use a Butcher Knife or enable Friendly Fire in the inventory menu and use any weapon. The Butcher Knife is the safer choice, because forgetting to turn Friendly Fire off can get your tamed animals killed during base defense.

Star Ratings: Finding and Breeding 2-Star Boars

Starred Boars only spawn more than 800 meters from the world center, so you will not find them near spawn. They can also appear as one-time spawns at Runestones and abandoned farms regardless of distance. 2-star Boars are rare enough that finding one is a small celebration.

Why stars are worth chasing

A 2-star Boar has triple the health of a 0-star, so it survives raids better, and it drops four times the meat and leather. Offspring take the star rating of the parent that gives birth, so breeding two 2-star Boars guarantees every piglet is 2-star.

Taming a starred Boar

Tame a starred Boar on the spot if you can, building a quick pen around it first. Moving wild Boars far is slow and risky. Once tamed, you can corral it by exploiting its habit of running toward gaps in fences.

Meta Strategy

Sausages are the single best reason to run a Boar farm. One Boar Meat plus 4 Entrails and 1 Thistle makes 4 Sausages, a strong health food from the Swamp into the early Plains. Boar Jerky is a cheap everyday food for building sessions: 1 Boar Meat and 1 Honey make 2 portions with balanced health and stamina for 30 minutes.

Seasoned Vikings

Protecting Your Farm

A Boar farm is only as good as its defenses. Before you defeat Eikthyr, the "Eikthyr rallies the creatures of the forest" raid can send Boars and Necks at your base. Weak pens let raid Boars break in, and Greydwarfs from other events can wreck fences and kill your animals.

Defense checklist

  • Use Stakewalls instead of Roundpole Fences for the outer perimeter: they have more HP and damage anything that touches them.
  • Roof the breeding pair's pen so Greydwarf Shaman poison cannot reach them through fences.
  • Keep the breeding pair in a covered room without windows; offspring can live in an open lower area since they are replaceable.

Multiplayer

Food demand scales fast with player count. With 4 to 10 players a Boar farm goes from nice to essential, and some seeds have sparse Boar spawns, which makes farming the only reliable supply.

Pro Tip: The Butcher's Knife Item Stand Trick

Place your Butcher's Knife on an Item Stand right next to your Boar pen. You will always know exactly where it is, it looks decorative, and you never have to dig through chests to find it. The same trick works for placing a Hoe near your farm or a fishing rod near water.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I tame Boars that spawn during the Eikthyr event?

Event-spawned Boars are always 0-star and are in a permanent aggressive state during the event. Once the event ends, they can theoretically be tamed, but they often despawn. It is not a reliable method.

Do Boars eat Yellow Mushrooms?

No. Boars only accept Raspberries, Blueberries, Mushrooms (the red ones), Carrots, Turnips and Onions. Taming speed is the same for all of them.

What happens if I leave the area during taming?

Taming progress pauses whenever no player is within the active area (roughly 64 meters). It does not reset, but it will not advance, so stay in range for the full 30 minutes. Sleeping does not speed it up; it just resets the Boar's hunger so it eats again.

How do I move tamed Boars to a different location?

Tamed Boars will run toward any opening in a fence, which you can exploit. Create a corridor of fences leading from your current pen to the new location, then open the gate. You can also push them by running into them or using a shield bash. It is slow but effective. Alternatively, use an Abyssal Harpoon to drag them, though this deals damage and risks killing them.

Can I rename my tamed Boars?

Yes. Press LShift + E while looking at an adult tamed Boar to rename it. Pressing E alone shows the message "(Name) loves you" with pink hearts. Piglets cannot be renamed or interacted with until they mature.
