Sledgehammers are the most underappreciated weapon class in Valheim. Most players pick swords and maces for speed and shield pairing, but sledgehammers offer something no other weapon matches: ground slams that hit every enemy within a four-meter radius. When
Greydwarfs, Draugr or Fulings swarm you, that crowd control is transformative.
The trade-off
Every sledgehammer shares the same slam, the same 1.7-second swing and the same brutal knockback. They are two-handed, so no shield, and they slow you down. You give up defense and mobility for crowd control, and once you learn positioning and timing, it pays off.
- Start with the
Stagbreaker: no metal needed, just
Corewood, Deer Trophies and
Leather Scraps at a level 2 Workbench. - The
Iron Sledge needs a
Draugr Elite Trophy (10% drop) and
Ymir Flesh from Haldor, so plan ahead. - The
Demolisher is no longer the top sledge. In 1.0 the
Nord Sledge and its Thunderblood and Frostfire variants take over. - Fight at doorways and chokepoints so every slam hits several enemies.
- Keep your Stagbreaker: its "Too Hard" message finds buried
Silver without the
Wishbone.
Stagbreaker: Your First Ground-Pounder
The Stagbreaker arrives surprisingly early and needs no metal: a level 2 Workbench, 20 Corewood, 5 Deer Trophies and 2 Leather Scraps. Instead of kiting Greydwarf packs one at a time with a
Club or
Flint Spear, you slam once and send the whole group stumbling.
No multitarget penalty
The base damage is modest, but every enemy in the radius takes all of it. Hit three Greydwarfs and you deal 75 total damage for one 12-stamina swing. The huge knockback also keeps enemies recovering instead of attacking.
Getting the materials
Corewood comes from Pine trees in the Black Forest, which even a
Stone Axe can chop. Deer drop a
Deer Trophy half the time, so about ten
Deer should cover the five you need.
Bait and slam
Don't run into a pack with a 1.7-second swing. Let enemies close in, time the slam as they cluster, then reposition while they stagger. This makes Burial Chambers and early Swamp trips much easier.

Iron Sledge: The Swamp's Best Friend
The Iron Sledge is where the class comes into its own. It hits nearly three times harder than the Stagbreaker and staggers most enemies on every hit. In Sunken Crypts, tight corridors funnel Draugr and
Blobs straight into your slam radius, and no other weapon clears those rooms as efficiently.
The recipe wall
It needs a level 2 Forge and:
- 10
Ancient Bark from Ancient trees in the Swamp - 30
Iron, smelted from
Scrap Iron found in Sunken Crypts - 4 Ymir Flesh, bought from Haldor for 120
Coins each after you defeat
The Elder - 1 Draugr Elite Trophy, which drops only 10% of the time from
Draugr Elites
The Ymir Flesh bill
The base craft costs 480 Coins of Ymir Flesh. Maxing the sledge takes 16 Ymir Flesh in total, or 1,920 Coins, so sell
Amber,
Amber Pearls and Rubies to Haldor first.
Why not the Iron Mace?
The
Iron Mace matches its single-target damage and allows a shield. But against five Draugr in a crypt, or during the "A foul smell from the swamp" raid, the slam is worth more than a shield. The sledge's higher knockback also keeps enemies out of your face longer.

The most common mistake when crafting the Iron Sledge is confusing the Draugr Elite Trophy with the regular
Draugr Trophy. They look similar, but they are completely different items dropped by different enemies. You need to specifically hunt Draugr Elites, the larger, tougher variants found inside Sunken Crypts in the Swamp. If you have all the other ingredients and the recipe is not showing up at your Forge, this is almost certainly why. Also make sure your Iron is smelted into ingots, as raw Scrap Iron will not work.
“The sledgehammer is not a weapon for people who want to play it safe. You give up your shield, you slow yourself down, and you commit to a 1.7-second wind-up. But when that slam connects with a pack of five enemies and they all go flying, nothing else in Valheim feels as powerful.
Demolisher: Mistlands Devastation
The Demolisher hits harder than most one-handed weapons at max quality and staggers virtually every creature with a single slam. Enemies don't just stumble, they fly. Bring it when the Mistlands throws a
Seeker Soldier and a pack of Seekers at you at once.
Crafting
It needs a
Black Forge, the Mistlands station built from
Black Marble and
Black Cores, plus 10
Yggdrasil Wood, 20 Iron and 10
Refined Eitr. Refined Eitr is the bottleneck: it comes from running
Sap and
Soft Tissue through an
Eitr Refinery. Unlike the Iron Sledge, no rare trophy is needed.
Emergency parries
Its block and parry armor are respectable for a two-hander. Don't rely on it for defense, but a well-timed parry staggers most Mistlands creatures and sets up a slam.

Nord Sledge and Its Variants (New in 1.0)
The Deep North finally gives sledgehammers a tier past the Demolisher. The Nord Sledge is forged at the Black Forge (level 4) from a
Mould: Nord Sledge, 20
Bloodgold and 10
Timberwood. Maxing it costs 80 Bloodgold and 40 Timberwood in total. It is also heavier to carry: the movement penalty grows from 15% to 20%.
Elemental upgrades
A finished Nord Sledge can be reworked into one of two variants:
Thunderblood Sledge: Nord Sledge, 20 Bloodgold and 1
Thunderblood Essence. It adds Lightning on top of more Blunt. Maxed total: 80 Bloodgold and 7 Thunderblood Essence.
Frostfire Sledge: Nord Sledge, 20 Bloodgold and 1
Frostfire Essence. It trades some Blunt for heavy Frost and a little Fire. Maxed total: 80 Bloodgold and 7 Frostfire Essence.
Novelty: the Wooden Sledge
The
Wooden Sledge turns up in Swamp chests. It deals almost no damage, so treat it as a curiosity.

Combat Techniques and When to Use Sledgehammers
Every sledgehammer has one slow, telegraphed slam, no secondary attack and no shield. Your strategy is all timing and positioning.
Fight at chokepoints
In Sunken Crypts, stand just inside a doorway and let Draugr file in. Outdoors, back against a rock or wall so enemies come from the front. Enemies spread fast in open ground, and a slam that hits one target wastes the weapon.
The stagger-slam combo
A staggered enemy stands stunned briefly and takes double damage. Follow up with another slam, or swap to a faster weapon to finish the last enemy. Many sledge users carry a one-handed backup for stragglers.
Base defense
Raids send enemies at your walls in groups, exactly where AoE shines. The Stagbreaker handles early Greydwarf raids and the Iron Sledge trivializes Draugr raids. Stand at a chokepoint in your wall and slam away.
The Silver Prospecting Trick
A slam tries to hit everything in range, including buried Silver veins and
Obsidian. The Stagbreaker is too weak to damage Silver, so the game shows "Too Hard". That turns it into a metal detector that works without the Wishbone from Bonemass.
How to Prospect Silver with the Stagbreaker
- 1
Pick the right Mountains
Head to Mountains with Stone Golem spawns or surface Obsidian; Silver tends to sit at those altitudes.
- 2
Slam as you walk
Craft a Stagbreaker (no metal needed) and slam the ground while crossing flat areas.
- 3
Watch for "Too Hard"
When the message pops up, you have found Silver. Mark the spot and return with a pickaxe.
- 4
Try the Swamp too
The same trick finds buried Muddy Scrap Piles that contain Scrap Iron.
Since the Hildir update (patch 217.11), the Iron Sledge counts as strong enough for Silver and shows "0" instead of "Too Hard". Keep your Stagbreaker in storage after you upgrade.
On permadeath or hard runs, veterans rush a Stagbreaker to prospect Silver before fighting Bonemass. Wolf Hide armor and Frostner make the fight far easier, since
Bonemass is weak to Frost. You skip most Iron-tier gear, go straight to Silver with the slam trick, then return to crush Bonemass with
Frostner.
Should You Use Sledgehammers?
Pros
- Best AoE damage in the game, hitting everything in a 4-meter radius with no multitarget penalty
- Massive knockback keeps enemies at bay, giving breathing room for the slow swing speed
- Blunt damage is effective against most enemies, especially
Skeletons,
Blobs, and armored creatures
Stagbreaker requires zero metal, making it the strongest early-game crowd control option
Silver prospecting trick (Stagbreaker only) lets you rush Silver gear before
Bonemass- Excellent base defense weapons during raid events
Cons
- Two-handed, so no shield is possible, leaving you vulnerable between swings
- 1.7-second swing is the slowest weapon class, punishing missed swings hard
- Movement speed penalty (15%, or 20% on the
Nord Sledge family) slows kiting - Poor single-target DPS compared to one-handed maces or swords
Iron Sledge has steep crafting costs: 30
Iron, 4
Ymir Flesh, and a rare
Draugr Elite Trophy- Gap between tiers: no sledgehammer for the Mountains, Plains or Ashlands
Sledgehammer Progression Path
Swords and maces get a new tier for nearly every biome; sledgehammers get four:
- Stagbreaker for the Meadows and Black Forest.
- Iron Sledge for the Swamp, viable into the Mountains and Plains if upgraded.
- Demolisher for the Mistlands.
- Nord Sledge and its variants for the Deep North.
Bridging the gap
From the Iron Sledge to the Demolisher there are three biomes without an upgrade, and the Ashlands has none either. Most sledge fans switch to Porcupine, Frostner or a
Black Metal weapon for the Mountains and Plains, then return when the Demolisher is available.

Norse Lore and Trivia
The Stagbreaker's tooltip reads "A weapon worthy of the Gods! If you get hit with this, you'll know it...". Its Deer Trophy construction likely nods to Freyr, who gave away his enchanted sword to win the jotunn Gerdr and was said to fight with a deer antler instead.
The other tooltips
The Iron Sledge is "A mighty hammer, worthy of a champion", an echo of Thor's hammer Mjolnir. The Demolisher, "This mighty sledge yearns to wreak havoc", is the most ornate of the classic three, with a Black Marble head and Yggdrasil-style designs, though neither material is in its recipe.
Recent Updates
