What Are Greydwarves and Why Should You Care?

Greydwarves are the signature creatures of the Black Forest and the first real combat test after the Meadows. These mossy, twisted tree-beings look like sentient firewood and come in three types: the standard Greydwarf, the hulking Greydwarf Brute and the poison-spewing Greydwarf Shaman.

Weak alone, dangerous in numbers

New players often underestimate them. A single 40 HP Greydwarf is barely a speed bump, but they never come alone. Natural spawns, Greydwarf Nests producing one every 12 seconds, and the noise of your mining and chopping can surround you with a dozen before you notice.

A walking resource delivery service

Greydwarves are also among the most valuable creatures of the early game. Their drops fuel everything from Portals to Frost Resistance Mead, and a well-built farm produces hundreds of resources per hour with zero effort. Stop seeing them as enemies and the Black Forest changes completely.

All Three Greydwarf Variants Explained

Each member of the family has a distinct role, which matters when you need to pick targets while outnumbered.

Standard Greydwarf

The basic foot soldier goes down fast to almost any weapon. It has two attacks:

  • Scratch: 14 Slash in a 1.7-meter arc, every 2 seconds.
  • Rock throw: 10 Blunt, every 8 seconds, from 5 to 15 meters.

The rock throw is the annoying one: it interrupts mining, knocks you off rafts and chips at your health. You can parry the rocks for a stagger window.

Greydwarf Brute

Its overhead slam deals 30 Slash with 3 meters of reach in a 45-degree vertical arc, so sidestep instead of backpedaling. Brutes are much rarer than standard Greydwarves and only spawn naturally at night in Black Forests more than 2,000 meters from the world center. They are the source of the Ancient Seeds that summon The Elder.

Greydwarf Shaman

The most dangerous variant despite its low health. Its poison blast deals 30 Poison in a 7-meter, 35-degree cone and cannot be blocked. The weakness veterans exploit: it only fires between 2 and 5 meters away. Get within 2 meters and the Shaman falls back on a weak 14-damage scratch.

It also heals allies within 4.32 meters for about 17.5 HP over 3.5 seconds, which is why Shamans die first in any mixed group.

Veteran Tip

Always kill the Shaman first. Its healing ability can make a 2-star Brute nearly unkillable in the early game. Rush past the regular Greydwarves, get inside 2 meters of the Shaman to disable its poison, and take it out before dealing with anything else.

Where and When Greydwarves Spawn

Black Forest ambient spawns

  • Day: up to 3 standard Greydwarves in your area.
  • Night: up to 6, joined by Shamans and Brutes. Night spawns despawn at dawn, so sleeping it off is always an option.

Spreading to the Meadows

After you defeat Eikthyr, up to 3 Greydwarves can appear in the Meadows at night. After The Elder, Shamans and Brutes join them, so earlier biomes never become completely safe.

"The forest is moving..."

Before you defeat The Elder, this raid sends up to 6 standard Greydwarves, 1 Brute and 1 Shaman at your base at once, one of the tougher early raids for an unprepared base.

Greydwarf Nests

These purple-glowing root masses are the main source of constant encounters. A nest wakes when a player comes within 60 meters and tries to spawn a Greydwarf every 12 seconds until 3 are alive within 20 meters:

  • 72% standard Greydwarf
  • 14% Shaman
  • 14% Brute

Spawns have a 15% chance to be 1-star and 2.25% to be 2-star.

Noise draws them in

Pickaxe and axe work makes noise that carries about 100 meters. It spawns nothing new, but pulls every existing Greydwarf in that radius toward you, and the noise decays slowly. Scout and clear the area before mining Copper or chopping trees.

“

They are born from rot and rainfall, they spring like mushrooms from the smoking soil. There is nothing on their tongues or behind their eyes, those who fear nothing should still fear them.

In-game Runestone lore

How to Fight Greydwarves Effectively

Greydwarves are easy once you know their patterns; their strength is numbers and chaos.

Use Fire

Every variant takes double Fire damage, so Fire Arrows are devastating. A Torch in your off-hand also frightens standard Greydwarves out of melee range. They keep throwing rocks but won't close in, which buys breathing room when you are outnumbered.

Area weapons

Block, parry and Campfires

Greydwarf attacks are slow and telegraphed, which makes them perfect parry practice, thrown rocks included. Watch your Stamina: running dry means no blocking, and being stun-locked by several at once causes most early deaths.

A Campfire placed mid-fight creates a spawn-free zone that standard Greydwarves avoid. Ring a Copper deposit with two or three while you mine. Brutes and Shamans ignore it, but the swarm thins dramatically.

Combat Priority Order When Swarmed

  1. 1

    Locate and rush the Shaman

Shamans glow green and stand slightly taller than standard Greydwarves. Get inside 2 meters to disable their poison, then kill them before they heal the group. They go down quickly.

  2. 2

    Deal with the Brute next

The Brute is slow but hits hard. Sidestep its overhead slam (backpedaling gets you clipped by its 3-meter reach) and punish during the recovery. Fire Arrows or a Torch and shield work well. Expect a longer fight.

  3. 3

    Mop up standard Greydwarves

With the dangerous variants down, standard Greydwarves are trivial. Use AoE attacks to clear groups efficiently, or simply backpedal while shooting them with a bow. Collect your Resin, Eyes, Stone, and Wood.

  4. 4

Destroy the Greydwarf Nest if present

If you keep getting swarmed from one direction, look for a nearby Greydwarf Nest. It has 100 durability, takes 1.5x Fire damage, and Slash and Chop do normal damage. Destroying it permanently stops spawns there, so make sure you don't want to farm it first.

Common Mistake

Never raft directly into a Black Forest island as your first exploration. Small islands concentrate all nearby spawns onto a tiny landmass because enemies cannot spawn in the ocean. You will be swarmed the moment you dock. Instead, find a Meadows that borders a Black Forest and walk in along the edge so you always have an escape route.

Greydwarf Drops and What They're Used For

The real value of Greydwarves is their drops. Quantities double with each star, but drop chances stay the same.

Greydwarf Eye

The most important drop: a 50% chance from every variant (1 Eye from Greydwarves and Shamans, 2 from Brutes). You burn through Eyes faster than almost anything else:

  • Portals (10 Eyes each), arguably the most important structure in the game
  • Mead Base: Frost Resistance, essential for the Mountains
  • Eyescream, a Stamina food
  • Wards and several blue-fire light sources

Resin

Standard Greydwarves and Shamans drop 1 each. It fuels Torches and goes into Fire Arrows and lighting. You always need more than you think.

Ancient Seed

Only Brutes drop Ancient Seeds, at 33%. You need 3 to summon The Elder, so don't skip Brutes.

Everything else

  • Bukeperries: 1 from Shamans (Fuling Shamans drop them too).
  • Wood and Stone: 1 of each from standard Greydwarves; Brutes drop 3-4 Wood and 2 Stone, an underrated bulk Wood source.
  • Dandelion: 1 from every Brute.
  • Trophies: 5% Greydwarf Trophy, 10% for Brute and Shaman Trophies.

How to Build a Greydwarf Farm

Once you see how many Eyes and how much Resin Portals, lighting and Mead need, a Greydwarf farm becomes one of the best investments in the game. Keep a Nest alive, funnel the spawns into a kill chamber and collect the drops.

Run continuously, a Nest averages about 260 Greydwarf Eyes, 303 Resin, 352 Stone and 475 Wood per hour.

Simple farm design

  1. Find a Greydwarf Nest in the Black Forest.
  2. Disable it temporarily: roof it over (it cannot spawn under cover within a 4-meter radius), or trap 3 Greydwarves nearby so it hits its spawn cap.
  3. Dig a pit under the nest so spawns fall in.
  4. Put Standing Braziers or Hanging Braziers at the bottom to burn them.
  5. Wall the kill chamber with Stone against Trolls and Skeleton archers.

Braziers

Standing Braziers need Iron and Fenris Claw from Mountain Frost Caves, which makes them a mid-game project. Hanging Braziers are the early option at 5 Bronze and 2 Chain each; four around the kill zone handle the spawns. Refuel them with Coal periodically.

Design tips

  • Build a hidden AFK room next to the chamber and crouch there; Greydwarves that see you attack the walls instead of dying.
  • Add a small viewing window and a nearby Portal.
  • Protect the Nest from raids, especially "A cold wind blows from the mountains," whose bats can destroy it. A Stone lip or partial roof, leaving some open space so it can still spawn, is enough.
Meta Strategy

Do not destroy Greydwarf Nests near your base until you are sure you do not want to farm them. They are a finite resource in each world, and a single well-placed Nest can supply all the Greydwarf Eyes, Resin, Wood, and Stone you will ever need. Destroy the nests that are in inconvenient locations, but save at least one or two for farming.

Base Defense Against Greydwarves

A Black Forest base means constant Greydwarf visits. These proven strategies keep them out:

  1. Workbench suppression: Workbenches block enemy spawns in their radius. Place enough around your perimeter for a continuous no-spawn zone. It is the single most important base defense mechanic in Valheim.
  2. Moat: dig a trench just outside the Workbench zone. It need not be deep, only steep on the inner side so enemies cannot climb out.
  3. Clear the surroundings: cut trees and undergrowth in a wide area and destroy Greydwarf Nests within 60 meters.
  4. Torches: ring the perimeter to deter standard Greydwarves.
  5. Sleep: night spawns outnumber day spawns about 2 to 1, and Shamans and Brutes despawn at dawn.

Greydwarf Lore and Trivia

Born from a rotting soul

According to the Runestones, a Greydwarf forms when the soul of a murderer or great sinner rots beneath the ground. The corrupted soul becomes a hollow cyst that draws rock, wood and moss to itself, gathering peat into flesh, braiding reeds into bone and taking rags for skin.

A literary name

The name comes from Astrid Lindgren's Swedish novel Ronja the Robber's Daughter, where the Gradvargar ("Greydwarves") attack people who show fear but leave the bold alone.

Reading star levels

  • 1-star Greydwarves have red bark.
  • 2-star Greydwarves have blue bark with colored accents.
  • Shamans shift from green (0-star) to green-teal (1-star) and blue-teal (2-star).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I tame Greydwarves?

No. Greydwarves cannot be tamed. They are permanently hostile creatures. However, you can use tamed Wolves or even escaped 2-star Boars as a passive defense force around your base to deal with Greydwarf spawns automatically.

Why do Greydwarves keep spawning even after I kill them all?

The Black Forest has natural ambient spawning that continuously generates Greydwarves regardless of nests. Destroying nearby Greydwarf Nests reduces spawn rates significantly, but does not eliminate them entirely. Place Workbenches around the area you want to keep clear to suppress ambient spawning completely.

Are Greydwarf Eyes worth hoarding?

Yes. Greydwarf Eyes go into Portals (10 each), Mead Base: Frost Resistance (essential for early Mountain trips), Eyescream, Wards and several blue-fire lighting pieces. You will use hundreds, so never discard them.

What is the best early-game weapon against Greydwarves?

The Stagbreaker is the strongest early pick: its area slam staggers groups and keeps you from being overwhelmed. Pair it with a bow for Shamans and stragglers. Once you have Bronze, the Bronze Atgeir's spinning attack is the king of Greydwarf crowd control.
