Key takeaways
  • Dyrnwyn needs three fragments from a chain of Ashlands Mysterious Locations; the last drops from the Lord Reto miniboss.
  • Start by finding the Vegvisir in a Putrid Hole (only about 25% have it).
  • Bring a Bloodstone: the 5th ingredient hides past the visible crafting slots.
  • Its 10 Fire is a weak burn, so Nidhögg the Thundering and the 1.0 Nord swords beat it in combat.
  • Treat it as an adventure reward and trophy, not a meta weapon.

The Honest Take on Dyrnwyn

Dyrnwyn is one of the coolest-looking weapons in Valheim and one of the most disappointing to use. You cross the Ashlands, clear three Mysterious Locations guarded by elite 2-star Charred, defeat Lord Reto and spend a pile of Flametal and Bloodstone. The reward looks competitive on paper but falls behind the far easier Nidhögg the Thundering in almost every real fight.

That said, getting it is genuinely fun. The fragment quest is one of the best adventures in the Ashlands, and the sword is a stunning wall piece with a constant orange glow. Go in for the journey, not to replace your Nidhögg the Thundering.

The legend

"Dyrnwyn" means "white-hilt" and comes from the Thirteen Treasures of the Island of Britain, from 15th to 16th century Welsh tradition. It belonged to Rhydderch Hael, and when drawn by a worthy man the whole blade blazed with fire. The in-game sword burns with a perpetual flame on your back and in your hand.

Dyrnwyn is the coolest trophy weapon in Valheim. Veterans will craft it, admire it for about ten minutes, then hang it on their mead hall wall and go back to their Nidhögg the Thundering.

How to Find All Three Dyrnwyn Fragments

Each fragment sits at one of three chained Mysterious Locations: the first reveals the second, which reveals the third. The fragments do not renew, so only one Dyrnwyn can be crafted per world unless you raise the item drop rate world modifier.

First location: Dyrnwyn Tip Fragment

Find the Vegvisir (a glowing runestone that marks map locations) inside a Putrid Hole. Only about 25% of Putrid Holes have it, so you may need several. The site is a small Grausten ruin with no entrance: break through a wall to reach the altar with the Tip Fragment and four Molten Cores.

A Monument of Torment (Elite) guards it, spawning only 2-star Charred Twitchers, Warriors, Marksmen and Warlocks. They are much tougher than standard versions.

Second location: Dyrnwyn Blade Fragment

A Vegvisir at the first site reveals the second: a ring of Grausten arches with four Molten Cores and the Blade Fragment on an open altar, no wall-breaking needed. The same elite Charred guard it, so bring full Ashlands gear.

Third location: Dyrnwyn Hilt Fragment

The second site's Vegvisir points to another enclosed Grausten ruin (break in again) holding the entrance to the Tomb of Lord Reto. Clear the dungeon and defeat Lord Reto, who always drops the Hilt Fragment. This is the hardest fragment: a full dungeon and a miniboss on top of the elite spawners outside.

Fragment Collection Walkthrough

  1. 1

Find a Putrid Hole with the Vegvisir

Explore Putrid Hole dungeons in the Ashlands. About 25% contain a Vegvisir that marks the first Mysterious Location on your map. You may need to clear several Putrid Holes before finding one.

  2. 2

    Collect the Tip Fragment

Travel to the first Mysterious Location. Break through the Grausten wall to enter. Clear the 2-star Charred defenders, grab the Dyrnwyn Tip Fragment from the altar, and interact with the Vegvisir to reveal location two.

  3. 3

    Collect the Blade Fragment

Head to the second Mysterious Location. This one is more open with Grausten arches. Grab the Dyrnwyn Blade Fragment from the central altar and find the Vegvisir pointing to the final location.

  4. 4

Defeat Lord Reto and Collect the Hilt Fragment

Break into the third Mysterious Location and enter the Tomb of Lord Reto dungeon. Fight through the dungeon and defeat Lord Reto to receive the Dyrnwyn Hilt Fragment. This is the hardest step, so bring your best food, potions, and Ashlands gear.

  5. 5

Craft Dyrnwyn at the Black Forge

With all three fragments, go to a level 4 Black Forge. You also need 20 Flametal and 1 Bloodstone. The Bloodstone is the 5th ingredient and can overflow past the visible crafting slots, so it is easy to miss.

Common Mistake

Many players collect all three fragments and stockpile Flametal, then find the recipe greyed out. The hidden culprit is Bloodstone: Dyrnwyn has 5 ingredients, which overflows the 4-slot crafting UI. Check that you carry a Bloodstone and that your Black Forge is at least level 4. Bloodstone comes from Charred Fortress chests, ground pickups and Riktig Fuling (2 to 3 per kill).

Dyrnwyn vs Nidhögg the Thundering: The Real Comparison

The math is not kind to Dyrnwyn. Both swords share the same attacks (a 3-hit combo with double damage on the last hit, plus a 3x secondary thrust), attack speeds, stamina costs and blocking. The difference is how their elemental damage works.

Slash versus element

Dyrnwyn has 10 more base Slash. But its 10 Fire is a damage-over-time effect ticking for roughly 2 per second, which barely scratches Ashlands enemies even when they are weak to fire. Nidhögg the Thundering's 10 Lightning is instant, and every hit has a 25% chance to trigger Chain Lightning for 75 damage that can jump to nearby enemies.

Stagger and procs

Lightning counts fully toward stagger, while the fire burn adds nothing meaningful, so Nidhögg the Thundering staggers better despite lower Slash. A charged secondary that hits a large enemy twice can deal up to 300 from Chain Lightning. Dyrnwyn would need 30+ hits on one target to match a single proc through its burn.

No gem slot

Dyrnwyn cannot take gemstones. Nidhögg starts as a base sword and becomes Nidhögg the Thundering with Iolite, Nidhögg the Bleeding with Bloodstone or Nidhögg the Primal with Jade.

Veteran Tip

Do not skip the Dyrnwyn quest just because the sword itself is underwhelming. The journey through the three Mysterious Locations is one of the best exploration experiences in the Ashlands. The Tomb of Lord Reto is a unique dungeon you cannot access any other way, and each Mysterious Location also contains four Molten Cores as bonus loot. Treat it as an adventure, not just a crafting grind.

Experienced Ashlands explorers

Should You Craft Dyrnwyn?

Pros

  • Highest base Slash of any Ashlands one-handed sword (145 at Q1)
  • Provides a constant orange light source on your back and in hand
  • Incredible aesthetic, looks stunning as a display weapon
  • The fragment collection quest is genuinely enjoyable content

Cons

  • 10 Fire damage is a weak DoT, adding roughly 2 DPS in practice
  • Outperformed by Nidhögg the Thundering in practice, and by the 1.0 Nord Sword line on raw stats
  • Cannot be enchanted with gemstones (no gem slot)
  • Only one per world makes it risky to use as a primary weapon
  • Requires defeating Lord Reto and exploring three Mysterious Locations
  • Does NOT provide warmth, act as a fire source, or give the Rested buff
  • Fully upgrading costs 80 Flametal and 7 Bloodstone

Understanding Fire Damage and Why It Falls Short

Fire damage in Valheim is always applied as a burn over time. The listed value is divided across the debuff duration, so Dyrnwyn's 10 Fire becomes roughly 2 damage per second. Even stacking the burn with repeated hits, expect maybe 4 per second against enemies very weak to fire.

Lightning, by contrast, lands instantly and in full. A Chain Lightning proc's 75 damage hits immediately, can chain to nearby targets and adds to stagger.

A deliberate nerf

The original game files had Dyrnwyn dealing 48 Fire before the Ashlands launched. The developers cut it to 10, which strongly suggests they see it as a trophy rather than a competitive weapon.

Meta Strategy

If you play multiplayer and want multiple Dyrnwyns, enable the triple item drop rate world modifier before picking up any fragments. Each Mysterious Location will then drop three fragments instead of one, allowing up to three swords per world. This needs to be set before you collect the fragments; you cannot retroactively change it.

Where Dyrnwyn Fits in the Weapon Meta

In the Ashlands

Iolite (Lightning) weapons dominate nearly every class. Thundering Berserkir Axes are considered the top melee option, and Nidhögg the Thundering is the best Ashlands one-handed sword by a comfortable margin. Chain Lightning on fast weapons offers instant damage, stagger and multi-target hits no other element matches.

Even the Mistlands-tier Mistwalker can beat Dyrnwyn in some Ashlands fights. That is a sobering comparison for a weapon that takes far more effort.

After the Deep North update

Players once hoped the Deep North would revive Dyrnwyn. Instead, 1.0 brought its own sword tier, all crafted at a level 4 Black Forge with Bloodgold:

Even the Frostfire Sword carries more Fire than Dyrnwyn, and the Staff of Embers reaches 138 Fire at Quality 4. Dyrnwyn's role is settled: craft it for the adventure, display it on an Item Stand in your mead hall, and fight with something else.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Dyrnwyn provide warmth or count as a fire source?

No. Despite being a literal flaming sword, Dyrnwyn does not provide warmth, does not count as a fire source for the Rested buff, and does not dry you off faster when wet. It emits an orange glow that provides some light, but less than a Torch due to how the sword is held.

Can I enchant Dyrnwyn with gemstones?

No. Dyrnwyn has no gem slot and cannot be enhanced with Iolite, Bloodstone, or Jade. Despite requiring a Bloodstone to craft, it does not gain the Bloodstone scaling effect (0.2% bonus damage per missing HP). What you see is what you get.

Why is the Dyrnwyn recipe greyed out at my Black Forge?

The most common reason is a missing Bloodstone. Dyrnwyn requires 5 crafting ingredients, which overflows the standard 4-slot crafting UI and hides the Bloodstone requirement. Make sure you have at least one Bloodstone in your inventory. Also verify your Black Forge is at level 4 or higher.

Can I get more than one Dyrnwyn per world?

Under default settings, no. The fragments are not renewable, so only one Dyrnwyn can exist per world. However, if you enable the triple item drop rate world modifier before collecting the fragments, each location will drop three fragments, allowing up to three swords.

Is Dyrnwyn better than Nidhögg the Thundering?

No. While Dyrnwyn has 10 more base slash damage, its fire damage is a weak DoT while Nidhögg the Thundering's lightning damage is instant, contributes to stagger, and has a 25% chance to proc Chain Lightning for 75 unresisted bonus damage. Nidhögg the Thundering wins in DPS, stagger output, and versatility in virtually every combat scenario.
