The Most Underrated Tool in Your Inventory
The Abyssal Harpoon is not really a weapon. It deals token Pierce damage and sits in your weapon slot, but swinging it at a
Greydwarf misses the point. It is a utility tool disguised as a spear, and once you know what it does, you will never leave home without it.
What the leash does
Thrown, it latches onto any non-boss creature and tethers it to you. As the creature tries to escape, it is dragged back, draining your stamina. No other item can do this, and it unlocks a whole set of tricks:
- Drag a Serpent to shore so its drops don't sink.
- Pull a tamed Boar into its breeding pen without chasing it across three biomes.
- Pin a
Troll in place while a friend flanks it.
Its flavour text reads "The ocean's wrath", which undersells it. Few items in Valheim create new gameplay rather than bigger numbers.

How to Craft the Abyssal Harpoon
Getting the Materials: Where to Find Chitin
Finewood and Leather Scraps are easy by this stage. Chop Birch and Oak with a
Bronze Axe for Finewood (or loot Black Forest shipwrecks), and kill
Boars in the Meadows for Leather Scraps. The real bottleneck is the 30 Chitin.
Finding a Leviathan
Chitin comes from mining Abyssal Barnacles on the backs of Leviathans. These huge creatures look like small rocky islands in the Ocean, with barnacle-covered humps above the waterline and two glowing eyes beneath the surface at night. They have a 1% chance to spawn per full Ocean zone and need at least 30 metres of water, so sail into deep water.
Why you must mine fast
- Each Pickaxe strike has a 10% chance to disturb the Leviathan.
- Once disturbed, you have 20 seconds before it starts submerging, and about 25 more before it is gone.
- Each barnacle drops 3 to 4 Chitin.
- Leviathans are placed at world generation and never respawn, so every one is a finite resource.
Backup source: Coral Cod
Catching a
Coral Cod has a 13.33% chance to yield 1 to 2 Chitin. Coral Cod need
Heavy Fishing Bait, which is hard to come by, so Leviathans remain the practical source for your first Harpoon.
Veterans know a trick for fully mining Leviathans: if the creature starts sinking, simply log out and log back in. When you reconnect, the Leviathan will have stopped submerging, letting you continue harvesting every last barnacle. It is the only known way to completely mine a single Leviathan.
How to Mine a Leviathan Efficiently
- 1
- 2
Park your boat and climb on
Sail close to the Leviathan and jump onto its back. You can walk freely on its surface. Locate the Abyssal Barnacles, which appear as large protruding nodes on the creature's shell.
- 3
Mine fast and stay alert
Strike the barnacles with your Pickaxe. Each hit has a 10% chance to disturb the Leviathan (you will see it shake and hear rumbling). If disturbed, you have 20 seconds to mine as many remaining barnacles as possible before the creature begins sinking. Grab every piece of Chitin that drops, then sprint back to your boat before you are pulled underwater.
- 4
Collect at least 30 Chitin
Each barnacle yields 3 to 4 Chitin, so a single Leviathan with several barnacles can easily provide enough for one Abyssal Harpoon (30 Chitin) plus an Abyssal Razor (20 Chitin). Consider crafting both while you have the materials, since Leviathans are a finite resource in your world.

How the Harpoon Leash Actually Works
Thrown at a creature, the harpoon attaches and creates a visible tether. The creature keeps trying to move away, and each time it reaches the end of the tether it is pulled back. That pull drains your stamina for as long as it struggles.
What breaks the leash
- Attacking with any weapon, including the harpoon itself
- Moving too far from the target
- Running out of stamina
- Dragging the creature through impassable terrain or structures
Grabbing a ship's rudder does not break it, which is what makes the Serpent strategy possible: you can steer while holding the tether.
Bring stamina
A
Medium Stamina Mead is close to mandatory for long drags. Its regeneration keeps working while the creature pulls against you, which greatly extends tether time. Without it, dragging a Serpent from deep ocean to the coast is a real struggle.
The harpoon works on every creature except bosses and fish, from Boars to Trolls to Serpents.
“The Abyssal Harpoon does not make you stronger. It makes you smarter. Every problem in Valheim that involves a creature being in the wrong place is solved by this tool.
The Serpent Strategy: Why the Harpoon Exists
Serpent hunting is the top reason to craft the Abyssal Harpoon. Serpents spawn in the Ocean at night or during storms, bite for 70 Slash every 10 seconds, and threaten any sailor. They also drop excellent loot.

The sinking-loot problem
Serpent Meat floats, but Serpent Scale and the
Serpent Trophy sink. Kill a Serpent in deep water and they fall to the ocean floor for good. Serpent Scale crafts the
Serpent Scale Shield, one of the best mid-game tower shields, so losing it hurts.
How to drag a Serpent ashore
- Drink a Medium Stamina Mead.
- Harpoon the Serpent.
- Grab the rudder and sail for the nearest coastline while the tether holds.
- In shallow water, release the leash and jump off the boat.
- Kill it with your best melee weapon. Every drop lands on the ground.
Serpents take 1.5x Frost damage, so
Frost Arrows or
Frostner speed up the kill considerably.
Creative Uses Most Guides Don't Mention
Animal relocation
The most practical everyday use. Tamed Boars, Wolves and
Lox can all be harpooned and dragged where you need them. If a tamed Boar refuses to walk through your pen's gate, pull it inside. It beats nudging creatures with your body or building funnel corridors.
Bird hunting
Early on, when
Feathers are scarce, throw the harpoon at Crows and Gulls. It uses no arrows, and unlike a thrown spear you don't have to retrieve it, so you can build your first arrow stockpile without spending arrows.
The human cart (multiplayer)
Load a friend with ore well past the Encumbered threshold, harpoon them and drag them toward your ship or base. The drag ignores carry weight, so it is faster than a
Cart over rough terrain. It looks absurd, but it works.
Player launching
With Friendly Fire enabled, you can harpoon other players and, with careful timing, launch them across huge distances. Pure entertainment, and the kind of emergent moment that makes Valheim special.
Abyssal Harpoon: Honest Assessment
Pros
- Unique leash mechanic with no alternative in the game
- Essential for collecting
Serpent Scales and trophies - Incredibly useful for relocating tamed animals
- Very light at only 1.5 weight
- No ammo required, works as a bird hunting tool
- Ship rudder does not break the leash
Cons
- Token 10 Pierce damage makes it useless as an actual weapon
- Cannot be upgraded beyond Quality 1
Chitin is a finite resource from non-respawning Leviathans- Continuous stamina drain limits effective drag range
- Does not work on bosses or fish
- Only 50 durability, requires Workbench Level 2 to repair
A common mistake is trying to drag creatures through doorways, walls, or narrow terrain gaps. The leash breaks when the target hits impassable geometry. Plan your drag route carefully, especially when relocating tamed animals into pens. Make sure the gate is wide open and there is a clear path. Also, never try to attack while the leash is active. Any attack with any weapon, including switching to a different tool, will instantly sever the tether.
When Should You Craft the Abyssal Harpoon?
The earliest realistic point is the Black Forest tier, after Eikthyr. You need:
- A Bronze Axe to chop Birch or Oak for Finewood
- Any Pickaxe (even the
Antler Pickaxe) to mine Abyssal Barnacles - A boat, at least a Karve, to reach the deep Ocean
Most players craft it moving from the Black Forest into the Swamp. By then you are sailing between landmasses, have likely passed a Leviathan or two, and Serpents are becoming a nuisance on night voyages. Have it ready before your first Serpent encounter.
It never becomes obsolete
Even in the Mistlands and Ashlands, you will pull it out for every Serpent. Since Chitin is finite, consider crafting an Abyssal Razor while you're at it, and save some Chitin for
Fins of Destiny if you plan ahead.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the Abyssal Harpoon to catch fish?
No. Fish in Valheim cannot take damage from any weapon, including the harpoon. You need a
Fishing Rod and bait to catch fish. This is a deliberate design choice.
Can I harpoon a boss?
No. The harpoon only works on non-boss creatures. All bosses and minibosses are immune to the leash effect.
What happens if I run out of Chitin in my world?
Leviathans do not respawn once they submerge, so the barnacle supply is finite. However, you can obtain additional Chitin by catching Coral Cod using Heavy Fishing Bait (13.33% chance of dropping 1 to 2 Chitin per catch). This method is slower but provides an unlimited, if tedious, Chitin supply.
Can I harpoon other players?
Yes, but only if Friendly Fire is enabled in your server settings. You can drag friends around or even launch them across distances with careful timing and coordination.
Does the harpoon break when the leash snaps?
No. The harpoon loses durability from throws, not from the leash breaking. You can repair it at a Workbench Level 2 at no material cost, just like any other weapon.
