- Should You Upgrade Your Staffs?
- Craft the
Staff of Embers first: it is the best all-round staff and levels Elemental Magic fastest. - Add the
Staff of Frost for cheap crowd control (5 Eitr per cast). - Every staff needs a
Galdr Table, and the Mistlands staffs run on
Refined Eitr, so build
Sap Extractors early. - The new
Lightning Strike (Deep North) hits hardest per cast: 300 Lightning at base quality. - Never fire near Dvergr: one stray fireball turns the whole group hostile.
Why Elemental Staffs Are Worth It
Lobbing a fireball into a pack of
Seekers and watching the whole group ignite is one of the best feelings in Valheim. Elemental staffs arrived with the Mistlands update, grew in Ashlands, and Valheim 1.0 adds a sixth: Lightning Strike, a Deep North staff.
What every staff shares
- Crafted at the Galdr Table and powered by the Elemental Magic skill
- Two-handed, with a -5% movement speed penalty
- Very light at 0.3 weight (
Dundr is the exception at 1.5) - Damage scales with skill: higher skill cuts Eitr cost by up to 33% and raises damage and knockback by up to 141%
That skill scaling is what turns these staffs from decent ranged options into powerhouses.

Setting Up: The Galdr Table and Refined Eitr
The Galdr Table is the magic crafting station for all Mistlands, Ashlands and Deep North magic gear. It needs a Workbench nearby, a roof and 70% cover, and costs:
- 10
Black Metal - 20
Yggdrasil Wood - 5
Black Cores - 5 Refined Eitr
Upgrading the Galdr Table
It starts at level 1. Each staff upgrade needs a higher table level, so build these extensions nearby as soon as you can:
Rune Table (level 2)
Unfading Candles (level 3)
Feathery Wreath (level 4)
Refined Eitr supply
Refined Eitr is the bottleneck for both Mistlands staffs. The
Eitr Refinery makes one unit from 1
Sap and 1
Soft Tissue. Sap comes from Sap Extractors on Ancient Roots in the Mistlands, and Soft Tissue is gathered there and dropped by
Dvergr Mages and Rogues. Set up several extractors early, because crafting and upgrading burns through Eitr fast.
Staff of Embers: The Best All-Around Staff
The Staff of Embers is arguably the best weapon in the Mistlands, and many veterans keep using it well into the Ashlands. It launches a slow, arcing fireball that deals Blunt and Fire damage, then explodes to hit and ignite every enemy nearby. That area damage is why groups simply melt.
It costs 35 Eitr per cast (about 24 at max skill) and gives 3 Adrenaline per attack. The staff also glows orange-red, which lights dark areas a little but raises your stealth visibility by about 20%.
Why it dominates the Mistlands
Most common Mistlands enemies resist physical damage but take full Fire and Frost damage, so
Embers often outperforms melee by a wide margin. Seekers have only 200 HP, and one well-placed fireball can kill several at once.
The Queen fight is practically built for this staff. Pure melee needs a very high block score and leaves almost no room for error, while spamming fireballs from range makes the fight manageable.

| XP per Hit | 1.0 |
| Light | Yes (orange-red glow) |
The Staff of Embers gives 1.0 XP per hit, the best of any staff for leveling Elemental Magic in normal combat. The Staff of Frost gives only 0.2 XP per hit despite firing faster. For efficient leveling, use Embers on tanky Ashlands enemies like
Morgens: they resist both of its damage types, take many hits to kill, and every hit counts.
Staff of Frost: The Crowd Control Specialist
The Staff of Frost fires a rapid stream of inaccurate ice shards instead of one big fireball. Each shard hits far softer than a fireball, but the fire rate is much higher and each cast costs only 5 Eitr, seven times cheaper than Embers. With decent Eitr food you can spam it almost indefinitely.
The freezing slow
Every shard that connects slows the target, and the slow stacks. A charging
Seeker Soldier becomes a crawling nuisance after a few hits. Use Frost as a support weapon: slow the big threats, then switch to Embers or melee to finish them.
Wet enemies take more Frost damage
Near water or in rain, your shards hit noticeably harder. Many mages carry both staffs:
- Frost: crowd control and fast targets
- Embers: raw damage and groups

Staff of Frost Crafting Recipes
“The Staff of Embers does not just compete with melee weapons in the Mistlands. It outclasses most of them. When every enemy resists physical damage but takes full Fire, suddenly that fireball is the smartest thing you can throw.
Staff of the Wild: Area Denial and Vine Summoning
The
Staff of the Wild is an Ashlands staff that does something no other staff can. Its green projectile deals Blunt and Poison damage, and a thorny vine grows from the impact point. Each vine attacks every enemy in range on its own for up to 25 seconds, and you can have up to 10 active at once.
Damage and cost
Its damage scales harder than any other staff: both Blunt and Poison quadruple from quality 1 to quality 4. At 55 Eitr per cast it is the most expensive elemental staff to use. In return, its area denial is unmatched. Plant vines at:
- Chokepoints
- Spawners
- Groups of charging enemies
Poor for leveling
Only the projectile impact grants Elemental Magic XP (1.0 per cast). The vines grant none, even when they do most of the killing. Blood Magic summons work differently, since skeleton hits do count.

Staff of Fracturing: Burst Damage Against Big Targets
The
Staff of Fracturing is the chaotic Ashlands cousin of Embers. It fires 12 small projectiles that scatter and explode, each dealing Blunt and Fire damage independently. Land all 12 at quality 1 and that is 288 damage per cast; at quality 4 (30 Fire per projectile) the theoretical maximum is 504.
The catch
Landing all 12 on one target is very hard. The spread is wide, so the staff shines against large targets and tight groups. Against a single small enemy you might land 3 or 4, which can leave it behind Embers.
Stacking fire damage
Each projectile applies its own burn, so multiple hits on one target can out-burn Embers. It costs 30 Eitr per cast, but the long reload between casts limits sustained DPS. Use it for burst damage at close to medium range.

Dundr: The Ashlands Lightning Staff
Dundr fires 12 lightning bolts with a massive 210 knockback, which makes it a strong tool for pushing enemies off you. Its Eitr cost is not reduced by the Elemental Magic skill, so it gets relatively more expensive to sustain than the other staffs as your skill climbs. It gives 0.1 XP per bolt.
Lightning Strike: The Deep North Staff
Valheim 1.0 adds Lightning Strike, the hardest single hit of any elemental staff. One cast deals 300 Lightning damage at base quality, rising by 20 per upgrade to 360 at quality 4. It costs 40 Eitr and has the most durability of any staff (400, up to 550). Knockback is low, so it is a damage tool rather than a crowd-control one.
It needs a level 3 Galdr Table and Deep North materials, so it becomes a late-game damage upgrade once you reach that biome.

Many players skip staff upgrades because the per-level damage gain looks small. Each upgrade also adds 50 durability, and staffs burn through durability fast. The extra damage also multiplies with your Elemental Magic skill bonus, so always upgrade when you can.

Leveling Elemental Magic
Elemental Magic is one of the slowest skills in Valheim. XP only comes from hitting living creatures; terrain, rocks and destructible objects give nothing. XP per hit by staff:
- Staff of Embers: 1.0
- Staff of the Wild: 1.0 (projectile only, vines give none)
- Staff of Frost: 0.2
- Staff of Fracturing and Dundr: 0.1 per projectile, up to 1.2 if all 12 connect
Best leveling methods
- Embers on Morgens (Ashlands): they resist Blunt and Fire, so they take many hits, and each hit gives full XP regardless of damage dealt.
- Frost on a trapped
Stone Golem (Mountains): golems are immune to Frost and never die, so they make an infinite training dummy. Only 0.2 XP per hit, but at 5 Eitr per cast you can keep going for hours. Build a shelter with a fire nearby for better Eitr regen.
Combat Strategies and Best Loadouts
Your Eitr pool is your ammunition, and managing it decides whether a fight goes well or turns into a retreat. Eat Eitr food every time:
At max skill, Embers costs about 24 Eitr per cast, so even a single Magecap can technically fuel one cast.
Gear
The Eitr-Weave set is the natural pairing: it gives the biggest Eitr bonus of any armor and boosts Eitr regeneration. Add the
Feather Cape for slow fall on treacherous Mistlands terrain, and
Pulsating Earrings for a bigger Eitr pool.
Ashlands tactics
- Summon skeletons with the
Dead Raiser (Blood Magic) to tank. - Cast Staff of the Wild vines where they fight to hold enemies in place.
- Lob Embers or Fracturing into the melee.
This lets you fight on your terms despite the relentless Ashlands spawns. Stay clear of lava, position carefully, and never rush into unscouted areas.
Be very careful firing staffs near Dvergr in the Mistlands. One fireball that clips a Dvergr archer, especially a starred one, turns the whole group hostile, and their retaliation is swift and deadly.
Recommended Mage Loadout
Should You Upgrade Your Staffs?
Yes, always. The tooltip gain looks small, but three things add up:
- Durability: each quality level adds 50, so a quality 4 Staff of Embers lasts 350 instead of 200 and needs fewer repair trips.
- Skill scaling: the extra damage is multiplied by your skill bonus (up to 141% at max skill).
- Cheap upgrades: Mistlands staffs only need Yggdrasil Wood, Surtling Cores or Freeze Glands, and Refined Eitr you should already be making in bulk.
What it costs
Upgrade costs escalate: each level costs more than the last. Taking the Staff of Embers from crafting to quality 4 costs 80 Yggdrasil Wood, 16 Surtling Cores and 64 Refined Eitr in total. The Staff of Frost is the same, with Freeze Glands in place of Surtling Cores.
The extra 18 Fire damage on a quality 4 Embers can turn a 4-hit Seeker kill into 3. That saved hit might be the one that would have killed you, and in a game where death costs skill levels, every edge matters.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which elemental staff should I craft first?
The Staff of Embers. It works in almost every situation and has the best XP gain for leveling Elemental Magic. The Staff of Frost is a strong second craft for crowd control. Save the Ashlands staffs for when you reach that biome, and Lightning Strike for the Deep North.
Does the Staff of Frost slow bosses?
Bosses have varying resistances to Frost damage and the freeze effect. The Queen takes full Frost damage and can be slowed, making the Staff of Frost a viable option for that fight. Other bosses may resist or be immune to the freeze effect, so check their resistances before committing to a Frost strategy.
Is Dundr an elemental staff?
Yes. Dundr is the lightning staff added in the Ashlands update. It fires 12 lightning bolts dealing 20 Lightning damage each (29 at quality 4) with a massive 210 knockback, and costs 25 Eitr per cast. Unlike other staffs, its Eitr cost is not reduced by the Elemental Magic skill. It has its own article on this site.
Can I use elemental staffs without Eitr food?
No. Elemental staffs require Eitr to cast. Without Eitr-granting food like Magecap, Yggdrasil Porridge, or Seeker Aspic, you will have zero Eitr and cannot use any staff. At max Elemental Magic skill, the cheapest staff (Frost at 5 base Eitr) costs only about 3 Eitr, so even minimal Eitr food works for it, but you still need some source of Eitr.
What is the strongest elemental staff in Valheim 1.0?
Lightning Strike, added with the Deep North. It deals 300 Lightning damage per cast at base quality (360 at quality 4) for 40 Eitr, and is crafted at a level 3 Galdr Table from Bloodgold, Nornathread and Thunderblood Essence. The Staff of Embers remains the best all-rounder before you reach the Deep North.
