- Swap to a blunt weapon for
Skeletons,
Blobs and Bonemass.
Why the Abyssal Razor Deserves Your Attention
Ask new players for the best early weapons and they will name the
Bronze Sword or the
Finewood Bow, not the Abyssal Razor. That is a mistake. This knife delivers Iron-tier damage without a single piece of ore, and you can have it before you ever set foot in the Swamp.
The catch is a detour: you must find and mine a Leviathan in the Ocean. Make that trip and the Razor will carry you through the Black Forest, the Swamp and into the Mountains.

How it fights
It is the third knife in the progression, between the
Copper Knife and the
Silver Knife:
- Primary: a fast 3-hit combo whose final strike deals double damage.
- Secondary: a forward lunge dealing 3x damage.
- Backstab: the 6x multiplier all knives share.
Veterans say a well-timed sneak attack with a fully upgraded Razor can nearly one-shot a
Troll. Burst like that is rare at this stage.
What it doesn't cost
No
Copper,
Tin,
Bronze or Iron, and no smelting. While others grind Copper deposits and build
Forges, you can be carving through

Crafting Recipe
Each upgrade costs more Chitin than the last: 10 for quality 2, 20 for quality 3 and 30 for quality 4. Add the 20 to craft and a maxed Razor needs 80 Chitin, so plan your Leviathan trips around that number.
How to Get Chitin: Mining Leviathans
Leviathans are huge passive creatures that look like rocky islands in the Ocean. They have a 1% chance to spawn in each full Ocean zone and need at least 30 meters of water. They are generated with the world and never respawn once they submerge, so treat each one as a limited resource.
Mining the barnacles
- Sail up to a Leviathan and climb onto its back.
- Hit the Abyssal Barnacles with any pickaxe; even the
Antler Pickaxe works. Each drops 3 to 4 Chitin. - Watch for a disturbance: every hit has a 10% chance, and you then have about 20 seconds before it sinks for good.
- Don't panic when it moves. Its body rises slightly before accelerating downward, giving you a moment to grab the last Chitin and sprint to your boat.
Getting all 80 Chitin
A single Leviathan can yield a big haul if you work fast, and a higher-tier pickaxe clears barnacles quicker. The well-known trick: log out when it starts sinking. When you log back in it will have stopped, and you can keep mining. It is the only reliable way to clear every barnacle.
Chitin is teleportable, unlike ore. Sail out, mine what you can, portal home and craft.
Sometimes Leviathans spawn near the Meadows coastline in shallow water. If you spot what looks like a rocky island near your starting area, check if it has barnacles on it. Getting Chitin this early can let you skip straight past Bronze weapons entirely.

Combat Techniques and Strategy
The Razor is not a walk-up-and-trade weapon. Its block armor is a pitiful 2 and its reach only 1.8 meters, so use it like a sword and you will have a bad time. It rewards patience, positioning and well-timed aggression.
Lead with the backstab
Knives deal 6x damage to unalerted enemies, double the 3x of most weapons. A sneak-attack lunge at quality 1 deals 720 total damage (120 x 6), enough to one-shot or nearly one-shot many mid-game enemies. Crouch, approach from behind, open with the lunge, then finish survivors with the primary combo.
Stagger-lock with the combo
The first two hits deal normal damage; the third does 2x damage with 20% extra knockback. The Razor's speed often staggers enemies before their own attack lands. That is why knives handle Swamp Draugr so well: you hit faster than they can, and the stagger keeps them locked down.
Use the lunge to move
The secondary is a 5-meter forward lunge. Veterans use it to slip through a gap in a group, reposition behind enemies and start the combo while they turn. The Razor has no movement penalty, and that speed is often worth more than the damage of heavier weapons, especially when kiting through Swamp water.
“The Abyssal Razor delivers iron-tier damage without a single piece of ore. While other Vikings are grinding Copper deposits, you can be carving through Draugr with a blade forged from the deep.
Do not try to use the Abyssal Razor against Blobs or Skeletons in the Swamp. Blobs resist both slash and pierce damage, and Skeletons resist pierce. Keep a mace or other blunt weapon as a sidearm for these encounters. The Razor handles everything else beautifully, but knowing when to switch is what separates good knife players from dead ones.
Parrying with the Abyssal Razor
Most players forget knives can parry. The Razor has a 4x parry bonus and 8 to 12 parry block armor depending on skill. That won't stop a Troll, but against Greydwarves and Draugr a well-timed parry opens them up for a heavy follow-up, ideally the secondary lunge.
The parry window is tight. Block force rises from 10 at quality 1 to 25 at quality 4, giving a little more breathing room as you upgrade, and each successful parry grants 5 Adrenaline for longer fights.

When to Replace the Abyssal Razor
The Razor realistically lasts from the Black Forest through the Swamp and into the early Mountains, an impressive run for a weapon that needs no smelted ore. Unlike the Forge-made Copper and Silver Knives, it only needs a Workbench.
Silver Knife
The natural upgrade adds Spirit damage to higher Slash and Pierce, which helps against undead. For Bonemass, though, both Slash and Pierce are resisted, so even knife players should bring
Frostner or an
Iron Mace for that fight.
Flesh Rippers
Many knife fans switch to the
Flesh Rippers, a Frost Cave-tier fist weapon dealing 60 Slash at quality 1 with the same 6x backstab. They need a Forge and
Silver but hit much harder. A common path: Razor through the Swamp, Flesh Rippers for the Mountain and Plains.
Staying on knives
The pure knife path runs Abyssal Razor, Silver Knife, then
Black Metal Knife in the Plains. The Razor covers the longest gap in that chain, which is exactly why it is so valuable.
Knife Upgrade Path
Is the Abyssal Razor Worth It?
Absolutely. It gives Iron-equivalent power while most players are still on Bronze. No movement penalty, the fastest attacks of any weapon class and a 6x backstab make it a real contender for the best early-to-mid game weapon.
The only barrier is finding a Leviathan. If you are already sailing a
Karve along the Black Forest coast, watch for a small rocky island, check it for barnacles and grab your pickaxe. One good trip sets you up for the next two biomes.
The Razor also changes how you play. Once you're used to its speed and backstab damage, slower weapons feel painful. It teaches you to use positioning and stealth as defense instead of heavy armor, skills that carry over to every weapon you pick up later.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the Abyssal Razor against Bonemass?
You can, but it is not recommended. Bonemass is resistant to slash and very resistant to pierce, which are the only two damage types the Abyssal Razor deals. The fight will take roughly 5 to 6 minutes even with decent knife skill, compared to about 2 minutes with an Iron Mace. If you insist on using a knife, the Silver Knife is better because its Spirit damage is not resisted. Bring Frostner or a mace as a backup either way.
What pickaxe do I need to mine Abyssal Barnacles?
Any pickaxe works, including the Antler Pickaxe you get after defeating Eikthyr. However, a
Bronze Pickaxe or higher is recommended because it mines faster, letting you collect more Chitin before the Leviathan potentially submerges. Each barnacle has 40 durability and drops 3 to 4 Chitin.
What happens if I run out of Leviathans in my world?
Leviathans do not respawn. Once all of your world's Leviathans have submerged, the only way to get more Chitin is through fishing. Catching a
Coral Cod with
Heavy Fishing Bait has a 13.33% chance to drop 1 to 2 Chitin. This is a slow method, and the Heavy Fishing Bait itself can be difficult to obtain. In practice, you should gather all the Chitin you need during your initial ocean exploration phase.
Does the Abyssal Razor have a movement speed penalty?
No. The Abyssal Razor has zero movement speed penalty, which is one of its best features. You can sprint, dodge, and reposition at full speed while it is equipped. This is a significant advantage over heavier weapons like maces and swords, especially in the waterlogged Swamp where mobility matters more than raw damage.
