Key takeaways
  • The Dundr is a Morgen killer: they take 1.5x Lightning damage and their big hitbox catches most of the 12 bolts.
  • It reloads like a crossbow (1.9 seconds); sprinting, dodging or rolling cancels the reload.
  • Bloodstone is the bottleneck: Charred Fortress chests, ground pickups and Riktig Fuling (2 to 3 each).
  • Craft the Trollstav first, then the Dundr as a specialist.
  • Each bolt that hits gives Elemental Magic XP, so it levels the skill very fast.

Is the Dundr Worth Crafting?

The Dundr is one of Valheim's most polarizing weapons. On paper it is incredible: a Lightning grapeshot staff that fires 12 bolts per blast, up to 348 Lightning at max quality if every bolt connects. In practice it dominates certain fights and feels clunky in others. It is not a general-purpose Ashlands weapon, but it turns Morgen into a joke.

A staff that plays like a crossbow

The name likely refers to thunder in Norse. This two-handed Elemental Magic staff fires, then makes you wait through a 1.9-second reload. That window is its biggest weakness: sprinting, dodging or rolling cancels it.

The niche

Nothing in the Ashlands resists Lightning, and Morgen are weak to it. Their large hitbox catches most of the 12 bolts, so the Dundr becomes a creature-specific delete button. For most other fights you will reach for your Staff of the Wild or a melee weapon.

Dundr: Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Massive burst damage if all 12 projectiles land (240-348 total Lightning)
  • Nothing in the game resists Lightning, and Morgen are weak to it (1.5x)
  • Huge 210 knockback keeps enemies at bay between shots
  • Fast Elemental Magic skill leveling (XP per projectile hit)
  • Low Eitr cost of 25 per shot
  • Decent blocking stats with 2x parry bonus

Cons

  • 1.9 second reload locks you in place (sprinting cancels it)
  • Short range means you must get dangerously close
  • Requires Bloodstone, one of the rarest materials in Ashlands
  • Ineffective when surrounded by multiple enemies
  • Overlaps with melee weapons at its effective range
  • No longer the only Lightning staff: 1.0 adds Lightning Strike

Nothing in the Ashlands resists Lightning damage. If you can land all 12 bolts on a Morgen, you are looking at well over 500 effective damage per shot after the weakness multiplier. That is not a weapon problem, that is a targeting skill problem.

Crafting the Dundr

You build the Galdr Table in the Mistlands from 10 Black Metal, 20 Yggdrasil Wood, 5 Black Cores and 5 Refined Eitr. The Dundr needs it at level 2, so add a Rune Table nearby. The base craft takes 10 Ashwood, 4 Flametal, 3 Celestial Feathers and 1 Bloodstone.

The Bloodstone bottleneck

Bloodstone is almost always what holds you back. Sources:

  • Charred Fortress chests.
  • Picked up from the ground.
  • Riktig Fuling, which always drop 2 to 3.

The Trollstav, Dyrnwyn, Bloodgeon and several other endgame weapons also need Bloodstone, so plan your spending.

Upgrade costs

Upgrades escalate: each costs more than the last (see the recipes). Reaching Quality 3 takes 25 Ashwood, 10 Flametal, 12 Celestial Feathers and 4 Bloodstone in total. Quality 4 needs a level 5 Galdr Table and brings the total to 40 Ashwood, 16 Flametal, 21 Celestial Feathers and 7 Bloodstone.

Veteran Tip

Do not craft the Dundr as your first Bloodstone weapon. Veterans overwhelmingly recommend the Trollstav first. The summoned trolls can clear entire Charred Fortresses from outside the walls, earning you more Bloodstone for your next weapon. Once you have a healthy stockpile, then consider the Dundr as a specialized Morgen killer.

How the Dundr Actually Works

Reload, then fire

Pressing attack starts the 1.9-second reload, which gradually consumes the 25 Eitr cost. You can walk and jump during it, but sprinting, dodging or rolling cancels it. When it finishes, the staff fires a short-range cone of 12 lightning bolts.

Per-bolt damage

The listed damage applies to each bolt, so the totals in the stats table assume all 12 connect. Against Morgen, the 1.5x weakness pushes a perfect Quality 3 shot to 468 Lightning before your Elemental Magic bonus.

Crossbow-level knockback

Its 210 knockback exactly matches a crossbow. Charred Warriors, Asksvin and other melee threats cannot close in: you shoot, they fly back, you reload while they stumble toward you, and you shoot again.

Fast skill leveling

Every bolt that connects grants Elemental Magic experience, so a full hit gives 12 instances from one shot. It is the fastest way to level the skill that powers all your staves.

Common Mistake

The most common mistake with the Dundr is trying to use it as your primary weapon in open Ashlands combat. The Ashlands constantly swarms you with Charred mobs from multiple directions, and the 1.9 second reload leaves you completely vulnerable to flanking attacks. The Dundr shines as a secondary weapon you swap to for specific threats, not as an all-purpose staff.

Best Targets for the Dundr

Knowing when to pull it out, and when to put it away, is the difference between loving this weapon and calling it garbage.

Morgen (the primary target)

This is what the Dundr was made for. Morgen resist Blunt, Slash, Pierce and Fire (0.5x) but take 1.5x Lightning. Their huge hitbox catches most bolts, and the knockback holds them off during your reload. Four perfect Quality 3 shots drop a base Morgen before skill bonuses; expect five or six with misses.

The best place to fight them is a Putrid Hole, where a single Morgen spawns as a one-time encounter. No flankers means you can focus on landing shots. In the open Ashlands, other enemies tend to join in during your reload windows.

Charred Warriors, Twitchers and Marksmen

  • Charred Warriors: slow enough that the blast-and-reload rhythm keeps them away when isolated.
  • Charred Twitchers: a well-placed blast one-shots them when they get too close.
  • Charred Marksmen: after a parry, one Dundr shot can finish them.

The Charred miniboss

Constant knockback keeps the miniboss from reaching you, turning a frantic melee into controlled kiting: fire, walk backward during the reload, fire again.

Dundr vs Other Staves

The Ashlands adds three more Galdr Table staves. Knowing their roles keeps you from wasting Bloodstone:

  • Staff of the Wild: the generalist and widely considered the strongest overall Ashlands staff. It overlaps the Dundr at close range without a reload window. It uses Jade, not Bloodstone.
  • Staff of Fracturing: fire cluster bombs. Its stacking fire from 10 bomblets is strong against big targets like Fallen Valkyries, reportedly about 50% more damage than the Staff of Embers when aimed well. It needs no gemstone at all: Charred Bone, Ashwood and Proustite Powder.
  • Trollstav: summons two trolls with roughly 2,000 HP each that can clear Charred Fortresses while you wait outside. That is why veterans make it their first Bloodstone craft.

Where the Dundr wins

Among Ashlands staves, only the Dundr exploits the Morgen's Lightning weakness. It also wins on knockback and skill leveling speed. If you regularly clear Putrid Holes for Morgen materials, it earns its hotbar slot.

New in 1.0: Lightning Strike

The Deep North update adds Lightning Strike, a single-bolt Lightning staff crafted at a level 3 Galdr Table from Bloodgold, Nornathread and Thunderblood Essence. It hits for 300 Lightning per cast at 40 Eitr, so it takes over as the Lightning staff once you reach that tier. Until then, the Dundr remains the Morgen specialist.

Combat Tips and Strategy

The Dundr rewards hit-and-run: close in, blast, walk backward while the knockback buys space, repeat. It works beautifully against single large enemies and falls apart when you are surrounded.

Do not dodge mid-reload

Your instinct to dodge-roll when an enemy swings will cancel the reload. Commit to it and trust the previous shot's knockback. It feels wrong at first, but that discipline is what makes the Dundr work.

Range management

The bolts spread in a cone, so more miss at distance. Get close enough for the whole spread to land, but not so close that you eat a melee hit during reload. Morgen are forgiving; smaller Charred Warriors need more precise positioning.

Parry in a pinch

The Dundr has a 2x parry bonus. If an attack catches you mid-reload, parrying it (96 parry block armor at 0 Blocking skill) handles lighter Charred attacks, but do not rely on it against Morgen.

Meta Strategy

The Dundr is secretly one of the best Elemental Magic training tools in the game. Since you gain skill experience for each of the 12 bolts that connects, a single Dundr session against Morgen in Putrid Holes can raise your Elemental Magic level dramatically. Higher Elemental Magic means more damage on all your staves, not just the Dundr. Even if you eventually shelf the weapon, the skill XP you gained carries over permanently.

Mage build community

Gathering Materials: Where to Find Everything

  • Bloodstone: Charred Fortress chests (heavily guarded by Charred Warriors, Marksmen and Warlocks), ground pickups, and Riktig Fuling drops. Bring a Trollstav to clear fortresses efficiently.
  • Celestial Feather: Fallen Valkyries drop 2 to 3 per kill, and Charred Fortress chests have more.
  • Flametal: mine the glowing Flametal Ore veins and smelt them in a Blast Furnace.
  • Ashwood: chop the charred-looking Ashlands trees. By far the easiest material.

Fighting Fallen Valkyries

They hover above the Ashlands with 1,500 HP. They are weak to Spirit, resistant to Fire, immune to Poison and take normal Lightning damage. Expect spit projectiles at range and claw and spin attacks up close.

The Verdict: Should You Craft the Dundr?

The Dundr is not the best Ashlands staff: the Staff of the Wild wins on versatility and the Trollstav on strategic value. But it does one thing exceptionally well. If you clear Putrid Holes for Morgen Hearts and Morgen Sinew, it turns those fights into quick, controlled bursts.

The knockback against Charred Warriors and the fast skill leveling justify the craft for dedicated mages. It is also fun: the grapeshot blast and the ragdolling enemies never get old.

  1. Trollstav.
  2. Staff of the Wild.
  3. Dundr, once you have Bloodstone to spare.

Dundr FAQ

Is the Dundr better than the Staff of Fracturing?

They serve different roles. The Staff of Fracturing deals stacking fire damage and is better against large single targets like Fallen Valkyries. The Dundr deals Lightning and is stronger against Morgen. The Fracturing also needs no Bloodstone (Charred Bone, Ashwood and Proustite Powder), so it is cheaper to build. Neither is strictly better; it depends on what you hunt.

Can I sprint while the Dundr reloads?

No. Sprinting, dodging or rolling during the 1.9-second reload cancels it. Walking and jumping are fine. Commit to the reload and use the previous shot's knockback to create space.

Does the Dundr have a secondary attack?

No. Like all magic weapons in Valheim, the Dundr has only a primary attack, with no alternate fire or charged shot.

Why does the wiki show damage per bolt instead of total damage?

The 20/23/26/29 Lightning values are per projectile. With 12 bolts per shot, the total when everything connects is 240/276/312/348. The wiki lists per-bolt values because not every bolt hits, especially against smaller targets.

Is the Dundr still worth it in Valheim 1.0?

Yes, for the Ashlands. Lightning Strike is the stronger Lightning staff later, but it needs Bloodgold, Nornathread and Thunderblood Essence. The Dundr is the Lightning option you can build with Ashlands materials.
