- Build it from 10
Wood with your Hammer; it unlocks most early tools, weapons, armor and building pieces. - It only crafts and repairs under a roof with 70% cover, but its radius and spawn suppression work anywhere.
- Repairs are always free, so repair everything before each trip.
- Reach Level 5 with the
Chopping Block,
Tanning Rack,
Adze and
Tool Shelf, each within 2 meters on its own connection path. - Space Workbenches 28 meters apart for gap-free spawn suppression, and roof them against rain.
Why the Workbench Is the Foundation of Everything
The Workbench is the first crafting station you build in Valheim, and it stays relevant into the endgame. It costs 10 Wood, needs no other station to place, and immediately unlocks a huge range of tools, weapons, armor and building pieces. Learn to use it properly and your whole playthrough gets smoother.
Two jobs beyond crafting
- Free repairs: no materials and no cost. Click the Hammer icon and all your gear returns to full durability.
- Spawn suppression: monsters cannot spawn inside its radius, which makes it one of the most reliable ways to protect a base.
The shelter rule
What catches most new players: the Workbench needs a roof and 70% cover to craft or repair. Placed in the open it still gives its build radius and suppresses spawns, but crafting stays locked until it is sheltered. It is the game's way of pushing you to build your first structure.

One of the most common mistakes new players make is placing their Workbench out in the open and wondering why they cannot craft anything. The Workbench requires a roof overhead and 70% cover from surrounding building pieces. Cover is calculated using 17 directional rays extending from the station. You do not need a fully enclosed room, but you need walls on most sides and a roof above. If you are struggling, try adding one more wall section and the "sheltered" indicator should appear.
How to Shelter Your Workbench
At your main base it is simple: walls, a roof, done. In the field, veterans carry about 25 Wood and 5
Stone, enough for a minimal shelter with a Workbench, Campfire and Bed. That gives you a spawn point, the Rested buff and full crafting in any biome.
Ultra-cheap field shelters
- Cheapest: one 2x2 Wall and two 45-degree Roof pieces, roughly 12 Wood beyond the Workbench. No floor is needed.
- Most reliable: three walls in an L-shape plus two Roof pieces, around 26 Wood total, and it works every time.
- Free: look for existing structures. Abandoned huts, ruins and loot buildings in the Meadows, Black Forest and Swamp often already have walls and a roof. Drop a Workbench inside and you are done.
Protecting Your Workbench from Rain
Rain damages the Workbench, so an unsheltered one slowly degrades until it breaks. If you use one purely for spawn suppression outdoors, either repair it periodically or put a single Thatch Roof piece above it, even with no walls.
The Workbench has 200 durability and takes damage from rain. If you are placing Workbenches in the field for spawn suppression, always add at least a roof piece above them. Otherwise, you will come back to find them destroyed and monsters spawning freely in what you thought was a safe area.
How to Upgrade Your Workbench to Level 5
The Workbench starts at Level 1 and reaches Level 5 through four upgrade structures built within 2 meters of it. Each level unlocks more recipes, lets you upgrade gear further, and adds 4 meters of build radius, from 20 meters up to 36.
Upgrades are progression-gated
- Chopping Block and Tanning Rack: early Meadows materials, build them as soon as possible.
- Adze: needs
Bronze and a Forge, so it arrives in the Black Forest era. - Tool Shelf: needs
Iron and
Obsidian, so it waits until you have cleared the Swamp and reached the Mountain.
Connection paths
Each upgrade needs its own clear connection to the Workbench, shown as dotted lines of light in the build menu. Four upgrades in a straight line on one side block each other. Spread them around the Workbench; they can sit on the other side of walls or floors as long as they are within 2 meters.

Workbench Upgrade Progression
“The Workbench is arguably the most underestimated structure in Valheim. It is not just a crafting table. It is your repair station, your spawn suppressor, your build enabler, and the foundation of every base you will ever make.
The Adze and Tool Shelf both require a Forge to build, but they do not require a
Forge to function afterward. This means you can build them near a Forge, then move your Forge elsewhere if space is tight. However, you will need a Forge present again if you want to remove them with the Hammer. Plan your workshop layout accordingly: most veterans keep a Forge and Workbench within 2 meters of each other so everything stays upgradeable.
Total Materials for a Fully Upgraded Workbench
Level 5 takes materials from four biomes. Iron and Obsidian are gated behind boss progression, so treat this as a checklist you complete over several stages rather than something to gather up front.
Total Materials (Workbench + All Upgrades)
| Wood | 30 |
| Flint | 25 |
| Leather Scraps | 20 |
| Deer Hide | 5 |
| Fine Wood | 20 |
| Bronze | 3 |
| Iron | 4 |
| Obsidian | 4 |
Using Workbenches to Suppress Monster Spawning
Monsters cannot spawn within the build radius of any Workbench, with or without a roof. That makes Workbenches the cheapest way to create safe zones.
Spacing for full coverage
Select the Workbench in the Hammer menu to see its 20-meter circle on the ground. Spacing them 40 meters apart seems logical but leaves diamond-shaped gaps at the corners of a square grid. The effective gap-free range is about 14 meters per Workbench, so place them 28 meters apart.
Scatter a few around farms, bridges or large outdoor projects and you can work without
Greydwarf or
Neck interruptions. Put a roof over each one to stop rain decay.
Upgrading and Repairing Gear
Each Workbench level lets some items upgrade one more time, up to 2 or 3 upgrades depending on the item (most Workbench gear tops out at quality 4). Upgrades raise durability, and for weapons and armor they also raise damage or armor, so a
Troll Leather Tunic gets meaningfully stronger at each level.
Two habits worth building
- Repair everything before every expedition. It is free at any Workbench level, no matter how rare the gear.
- Hold Shift while crafting to make 5 items at once, handy for stacks of arrows.
Everything You Can Craft at a Workbench
The Workbench has the largest recipe list of any station, from the very start of the game into late-game content. Your first Hammer is crafted from your inventory with no station, and it lets you build everything else.
Tools and weapons
- Tools:
Hoe (for flattening and raising terrain),
Flint Axe,
Antler Pickaxe, Abyssal Harpoon. - Weapons:
Crude Bow,
Flint Knife,
Flint Spear,
Finewood Bow,
Stagbreaker, Abyssal Razor. The Finewood Bow and Stagbreaker stay useful well into the Black Forest.
Armor and shields
- Armor sets: Rag, Leather, Troll Leather, Root and Fenris. Troll Leather gives a stealth bonus and is entirely Workbench-crafted.
- Capes:
Deer Hide Cape,
Wolf Fur Cape,
Linen Cape,
Lox Cape. - Shields:
Wood Shield,
Wood Tower Shield,
Bone Tower Shield.
Arrows and miscellaneous
- Arrows:
Wood Arrow,
Flinthead Arrow,
Fire Arrow,
Obsidian Arrow,
Poison Arrow,
Frost Arrow,
Needle Arrow. Many players never realize mid and late-game arrows come from the Workbench, not the Forge. - Misc:
Tankard,
Horn of Celebration,
Lox Saddle, siege payloads, and bombs including the
Ooze Bomb,
Bile Bomb,
Smoke Bomb and
Basalt Bomb.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Workbench need a floor to work?
No. The Workbench only needs a roof and 70% cover to function. You can place it directly on the ground with no floor pieces at all. This is especially useful for quick field shelters where you want to minimize material costs.
Can I move the Forge away after building the Adze and Tool Shelf?
Why can I not place my fourth upgrade item?
Each upgrade needs its own unblocked connection path to the Workbench, shown as dotted lines of light. If you lined up your upgrades on one side, they block each other's connection paths. Spread them around the Workbench, or place them on opposite sides of walls and floors. They just need to be within 2 meters of the Workbench.
Does the Workbench suppress monster spawns without a roof?
Yes. The Workbench suppresses monster spawning within its build radius regardless of whether it has a roof or cover. The roof is only needed for crafting and repairing. However, an unsheltered Workbench will take rain damage and eventually break, so add a roof to keep it functional long term.
How far apart should I place Workbenches for full spawn suppression?
Place them 28 meters apart for complete coverage. While the build radius is 20 meters, circular areas leave gaps when arranged in a square grid. The largest gap-free square that fits inside the circle gives an effective range of about 14 meters per side, so 28 meters between Workbenches ensures no spawning gaps.
