Honey feeds almost every Mead Base you will brew, from
Poison Resistance Mead (essential before the Swamp) to
Frost Resistance Mead for the Mountain. Skip the Honey farm early and you will hit a wall later. Veterans hunt for Wild Beehives in the Meadows right after building their first shelter.
The catch: a Beehive needs a
Queen Bee, and Queen Bees are not renewable. Each world has a fixed number of Wild Beehives, around one hundred on average, and finding your first can be frustrating on some seeds.
- Find Wild Beehives in Meadows ruins and Black Forest towers; listen for buzzing.
- Shoot them from beyond 4 meters and always pick up the Queen Bee.
- Build Beehives from the Hammer menu, not the
Workbench. - Place them outdoors with open sky, in the Meadows, Black Forest or Plains.
- Collect at least every 80 minutes so a full hive never sits idle.
Where to Find Wild Beehives
Wild Beehives only spawn inside specific world-generated structures:
- Meadows: Abandoned Houses, Abandoned Villages and Draugr Villages.
- Black Forest: Contested Towers.
They appear nowhere else.
Where to look inside
The most common spot is the small ruined wooden houses of the Meadows. Look up: hives hang from upper corners and rafters and are easy to miss if you only check chests. They also cling to the undersides of tall hunting stands and to lean-to shelters around firepits.
Listen for them
Wear headphones. Wild Beehives buzz loudly, and you hear them well before you see them. The other sign is sudden Poison damage: a hive deals 10 Poison damage in a 4-meter radius every 4 seconds, so mystery Poison ticks mean a hive is close.
Do not just check houses. Hunting stands and lean-to firepits in the Meadows can also have Wild Beehives attached to them. Experienced players always check every structure type, not just the obvious ruined buildings. If your starting island seems barren, expand your search to other islands. Bee distribution varies wildly between world seeds.

How to Harvest Queen Bees Safely
Wild Beehives have only 50 durability. Shoot them with a
Crude Bow from outside the 4-meter Poison radius: one or two arrows break the hive and drop a Queen Bee plus 1 to 3 Honey. Grab the Queen Bee immediately, since it is easy to lose among the debris.
No bow? Collapse the building
Place a Workbench nearby and use the Hammer to deconstruct the walls and supports around the hive. When the structure collapses, the hive breaks and drops its loot, and you keep the
Wood. This works best on small Meadows houses where the hive is wedged into the rafters.
If you get stung
The Poison will not kill a healthy player, but it chunks your health if you stand and melee the hive. Back off, let it wear off, and switch to a ranged approach.
Queen Bees are teleportable and stack to 20, so you can portal a whole collection back to your main base.
“Queen Bees are not renewable. There is a fixed number per world, roughly one hundred on average. Every Wild Beehive you find is a permanent addition to your Honey production, so never leave a Queen Bee on the ground.
Building Your First Beehive
The Beehive is not crafted at the Workbench. It is a placeable structure in the Hammer's build menu:
- Make sure a Workbench is in range and a Queen Bee is in your inventory.
- Equip the Hammer and open the build menu (right mouse button).
- Open the Crafting tab and select Beehive.
- Place it, spending 10 Wood and 1 Queen Bee.
Durability
The Beehive is not damaged by rain. It is weak to Chop, resists Pierce and ignores Poison and Spirit (full values in the properties table at the end). In practice, raids and stray axe swings while chopping nearby trees destroy most hives.
Beehive Recipe
New players constantly search for "Beehive" at the Workbench and cannot find it. Valheim has three crafting systems: inventory crafting, workbench/forge station crafting, and Hammer building. The Beehive is a placed structure, so it lives in the Hammer's Crafting tab, not in the Workbench interface. If you cannot find it, make sure you have a Queen Bee in your inventory and a Workbench in range.
The Cover System: Why Your Bees Are Angry
This is the most important Beehive mechanic, and the opposite of most stations. Beehives need to be exposed: less than 60% cover, in the Meadows, Black Forest or Plains. Put one inside a fully enclosed base and the bees will be angry and produce nothing.
How cover is measured
The game casts 17 invisible rays outward from the hive, each checking for obstacles within 29.5 meters. Too many blocked rays push cover above 60% and production stops.
Reading the hover text
- "The bees are happy": producing Honey.
- "The bees are angry": too much cover or the wrong biome.
- "The bees are sleeping": night or rain. Normal; production resumes later.
Best placement
Put hives fully outdoors with open sky above: on the ground near your base, on flat roofs, or on raised platforms. For raid protection, use a fenced yard without a roof. A small fenced bee garden looks good and stops enemies bumping into hives during events.
Beehives only produce Honey in the Meadows, Black Forest, and Plains biomes. If you build your base on the border of the Swamp or Mountain, your Beehives may end up in an incompatible biome zone. Check the minimap biome label before placing them. Even a few meters can make the difference.
Honey Production Math and Scaling Up
Each Beehive makes 1 Honey roughly every 20 real-time minutes and stops at 4. Collect at least every 80 minutes to keep it running at full output; a full hive wastes production.
How many hives you need
The common Mead Bases (Poison Resistance, Frost Resistance, Minor Healing) each take 10 Honey. One hive at full speed supplies one such base about every 200 minutes (3.3 hours of play). To keep several meads flowing at once:
- Solo: 5 to 8 Beehives is the sweet spot.
- Group: 10 or more.

Honey as food and ingredient
Eaten raw, Honey is a solid early Stamina food, but its real value is as an ingredient. Beyond Mead Bases it goes into cooking recipes for the whole game:
Demand only grows as you progress, so keep adding hives.

The Mead Pipeline: From Honey to Potions
Knowing the full brewing chain helps you size your farm:
- A Beehive produces Honey.
- Honey and other ingredients go into a
Mead Ketill to make a Mead Base. - The Mead Base ferments in a
Fermenter for 2 in-game days and yields 6 meads.
The Fermenter is built near a Forge (30
Finewood, 5
Bronze, 10
Resin) and needs 70% cover and a roof to work.
Common Mead Base recipes
- Poison Resistance: 10 Honey, 5
Thistle, 1
Neck Tail, 10
Coal. - Minor Healing: 10 Honey, 5
Blueberries, 10
Raspberries, 1
Dandelion. - Frost Resistance: 10 Honey, 5 Thistle, 2
Bloodbag, 1
Greydwarf Eye.
Six bottles sounds like plenty, but you burn through Poison Resistance Mead fast in the Swamp. Brew several batches before pushing a harder biome. Honey is almost always the bottleneck, which is why your hive count matters.
Setting Up Your Honey Farm
- 1
Find and harvest Wild Beehives
Explore Meadows structures (Abandoned Houses, Villages, Draugr Villages) and Black Forest Contested Towers. Listen for buzzing. Shoot Wild Beehives with a bow from outside 4 meters to avoid Poison damage. Collect every Queen Bee you find.
- 2
Choose an outdoor placement area
Pick a spot in the Meadows, Black Forest, or Plains with open sky above. Near your base is ideal for easy collection. Avoid placing under roofs, inside buildings, or in biomes like the Swamp or Mountain where bees will not produce.
- 3
Build Beehives via the Hammer
Ensure a Workbench is in range. Equip your Hammer, open the build menu (right mouse button), go to the Crafting tab, and place Beehives. Each one costs 10 Wood and 1 Queen Bee. Space them out slightly for easier collection.
- 4
Verify bees are happy
Hover over each Beehive during the daytime in clear weather. You should see "The bees are happy." If it says "The bees are angry," the cover is too high (move them away from walls and roofs) or you are in the wrong biome. "The bees are sleeping" during rain or night is normal.
- 5
Collect Honey regularly
Interact with each Beehive to collect Honey. Each hive caps at 4 Honey, so collect at least once every 80 minutes of playtime to keep production running. Build a routine of checking your hives whenever you return to base.

Beehive FAQ
Why do my bees say 'The bees are angry'?
The Beehive has more than 60% cover (too many walls, roofs, or structures nearby blocking the 17 cover rays) or it is placed in an incompatible biome. Move it outdoors with open sky in the Meadows, Black Forest, or Plains to fix this.
Can I get more Queen Bees after I have collected all the Wild Beehives?
No. Queen Bees are not renewable. Each world has a fixed number of Wild Beehives (roughly 100 on average). Once you destroy them all and collect the Queen Bees, there is no way to get more. Treat every Queen Bee as valuable and never leave one behind.
Do Beehives produce Honey at night or in the rain?
When the bees are sleeping (nighttime or rain), the Beehive pauses Honey production. However, any Honey already inside the hive is preserved. Production resumes as soon as daytime clear weather returns. This is normal behavior and nothing to worry about.
Can I destroy and relocate a player-built Beehive?
Yes. Use the Hammer's deconstruct function to break down a placed Beehive. You will get the Wood and Queen Bee back, allowing you to rebuild it in a better location. Any uncollected Honey inside will drop on the ground.
