Deer Hide is needed from your first armor to the Draugr Fang, so hunt Deer early and often.- Sneak up from behind: Deer detect you by sight and sound only, and wind does not matter.
- A thrown
Flint Spear or a fully drawn bow with
Flinthead Arrows kills a 0-star Deer in one hit. - Antlers show stars: bigger antlers mean far more hide and meat.
- Two Deer Trophies (50% drop) summon Eikthyr, so do not hoard them.
Why Deer Matter So Much Early On
Every Viking starts the same way: wake up in the Meadows, punch a few trees and realise you need gear. That gear needs Deer Hide, so hunting Deer is the first real skill check. Unlike
Boars, which charge you and practically deliver their own
Leather Scraps, Deer are skittish and bolt at the slightest noise.
What Deer are
Deer are passive Forest monsters that wander the Meadows and Black Forest. They never attack you or anything else, but once startled they sprint off fast enough to leave you behind unless you know what you are doing.
Why you need them

“Deer hunting is the first real skill check Valheim throws at you. If you can consistently take down Deer in the Meadows, you are ready for everything the early game has in store.
How to Find Deer
Deer spawn commonly in Meadows forests and throughout the Black Forest. The spawn limit is 4 per zone, so you rarely see big herds, but they replenish reliably. Listen for their distinctive whimpering bark, which carries far. When you hear it, stop and scan the area.
Build a hunting route
Mark Deer spawn spots on your map. Deer return to the same general areas after respawning, so a few markers make a hunting loop you can run every couple of in-game days. Veterans say a good loop near your base is worth more than any early weapon upgrade.
Spot the stars
You can read star levels from the antlers: none on a 0-star, small on a 1-star, large on a 2-star. Always take starred Deer first; a 2-star drops four times the hide and meat of a regular Deer.
Best Hunting Strategies
Deer detect you by sight and sound only. There is no scent mechanic and wind direction has no effect, which has been confirmed in the game code. Creatures see in a forward cone based on body orientation and react to the noise of running and combat.
Sneak in short bursts
Crouching (Left Ctrl) shrinks your detection radius. The classic mistake is crouch-walking until stamina hits zero, which stands you up and alerts every Deer nearby. Move in short bursts, then stop and let stamina refill while you stay crouched.
Approach from behind
The detection cone faces forward from the body, wherever the head turns. Approaching from the rear makes you nearly invisible even at close range. Use trees and rocks as cover; you can stand up behind a tree to regenerate faster, then crouch again before moving in.
Hunting Methods Ranked by Effectiveness
- 1
Flint Spear Throw (Best Early Game)
The Flint Spear's secondary attack (middle mouse button) throws the spear, and it will one-shot a 0-star Deer. The spear is reusable: just walk over it to pick it back up. This method is more reliably accurate than the
Crude Bow and costs no arrows. Many veterans skip the Crude Bow entirely in favor of the spear. Sneak within throwing range, aim slightly above the Deer, and let it fly. - 2
Bow and Flinthead Arrows (Reliable at Range)
Always draw the string fully: a full draw greatly improves accuracy and range. The Crude Bow has heavy arrow drop, so aim above the Deer's body, roughly at its health bar. Use Flinthead Arrows instead of
Wood Arrows; they hit much harder and one-shot Deer. Handling feels noticeably better around Bows skill 10, and the
Finewood Bow is a big accuracy upgrade. - 3
Flint Knife Sneak Attack (High Risk, High Reward)
The
Flint Knife has no movement speed penalty, so you can sprint at full speed while holding it, and its secondary attack is a lunging stab that closes distance. A sneak attack benefits from the knife's 6x backstab multiplier and one-shots a Deer. You can also sprint straight at a Deer and slash before it escapes. It takes timing but costs nothing per kill. - 4
Chase Into Water or Obstacles
Spooked Deer often run into water, rocks, or trees, where they get briefly stuck. If you have the stamina food to sustain a chase, you can herd Deer toward coastlines or cliff faces and finish them off when they stall. This is not efficient, but it works in a pinch when stealth has failed. Just avoid chasing through water yourself, as the Wet debuff drains your stamina regeneration.

Always eat three foods before a hunting trip, prioritizing stamina foods like
Raspberries and
Honey over health foods. More stamina means more time holding a drawn bow, longer sneak sessions, and the ability to chase a Deer if your first attack misses. The Rested buff from sitting near a fire doubles your stamina regeneration rate, so make sure to grab that before heading out.
Deer Drops and What They're Used For
Every Deer drops Deer Hide and Deer Meat, plus a 50% chance at a
Deer Trophy. Starred Deer multiply the hide and meat. Later you can also find Deer Hide in Troll Cave chests in the Black Forest and by breaking dwelling roofs in
Fuling villages in the Plains.
Deer Hide
Deer Hide weighs 1, stacks to 50 and is teleportable. You will need it from day one through the Mountains:
- Meadows: the
Leather Helmet,
Leather Tunic and
Leather Trousers, the
Deer Hide Cape, and Crude Bow upgrades - Black Forest: the Finewood Bow, Bronze armor (including the
Bronze Plate Tunic and
Bronze Plate Leggings) and the
Bronze Spear - Swamp: the
Huntsman Bow, Iron armor and Root armor - Mountain: the Draugr Fang
Buildings that need Deer Hide
It is also part of many structures: the Deer Rug,
Tanning Rack,
Forge Bellows, the
Karve and
Longship, the Dragon Bed, Darkwood Chair, Stone Throne and
Black Marble Throne.
Several of these are progression gates: the Tanning Rack is a Workbench upgrade that unlocks key recipes, the Forge Bellows is a
Forge upgrade you need for higher-tier metalwork, and the Karve is your first proper sailing vessel. Keep hunting even after your armor feels sorted.

Deer Meat
Cook Deer Meat on a
Cooking Station for
Cooked Deer Meat, one of the strongest health foods in the Meadows. Leave it too long and it burns into
Coal. At a
Cauldron you can turn it into
Deer Stew with
Blueberries and a
Carrot, a stronger and longer-lasting health food that is an excellent choice for
The Elder.
Deer Trophy
The trophy drops at 50% from every Deer. Its key use is summoning Eikthyr: place 2 Deer Trophies at the Mystical Altar in the Meadows. It also crafts the
Stagbreaker and the
Mead Horn of Oden, and you can display it on an Item Stand or use it to program a Ballista.

Key Recipes Using Deer Drops
A common mistake is hoarding Deer Trophies because they seem rare. With a 50% drop rate, you will accumulate them quickly once you get the hang of hunting. Do not be afraid to use two on Eikthyr early. The boss fight gives you the
Hard Antler, which unlocks the
Antler Pickaxe, which unlocks mining
Copper and
Tin. Delaying
Eikthyr because you are saving trophies just stalls your entire progression.
Deer Detection Mechanics Explained
Deer use two senses: sight and sound. The vision cone points forward from the body, and the head-turning animation is purely cosmetic, so a Deer looking left has not moved its cone.
Noise and stealth gear
Noise depends on movement: running is loudest, then walking, then sneaking. A Deer that hears you goes alert and eventually flees. The Troll Leather set's stealth bonus shrinks your detection radius while sneaking, so a
Troll Leather Hood,
Troll Leather Tunic and
Troll Leather Trousers make a great hunting outfit.
When a Deer bolts
Do not chase it. Crouch behind cover and wait: Deer calm down and wander back toward their spawn area. The same goes for missed shots. Let the Deer reset, reposition and take a better shot.
Building a Deer Farm
Deer cannot be tamed or bred, but you can build a semi-passive farm around their spawning:
- Find a small Meadows island or peninsula.
- Clear all trees and rocks and flatten the ground with a
Hoe. - Fence the perimeter so spawned Deer cannot run away.
- Build a small AFK shelter 30 to 60 meters away, the range where spawning happens.
- Idle for a few minutes, then return to collect the trapped Deer.
It is slow but entirely passive, and the same area also spawns Boars,
Necks and occasionally birds, which makes it a good multi-purpose farm.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you tame Deer in Valheim?
No. Deer cannot be tamed or bred, unlike Boars, Wolves and
Lox. You get Deer materials by hunting wild Deer, from Troll Cave chests, or by breaking Fuling village roofs.
Does wind direction affect Deer detection?
No. There is no scent mechanic in Valheim, which has been confirmed in the game code. Wind direction has no effect on detection. Deer detect players by sight (a forward vision cone) and sound (movement noise) only.
What is the best weapon for hunting Deer early game?
The thrown Flint Spear (middle mouse button). It one-shots 0-star Deer, is more accurate than the Crude Bow and is reusable: just pick it up after the throw. Many experienced players skip the Crude Bow and use the spear until they can craft a Finewood Bow.
How do you tell if a Deer is starred?
Look at the antlers. A 0-star Deer has no visible antlers. A 1-star Deer has small antlers. A 2-star Deer has large, prominent antlers. Starred Deer drop significantly more Deer Hide and Deer Meat, so always prioritize them when spotted.
