What Is the Neck?
The Neck is one of the first hostile creatures you meet in Valheim, and easily the most annoying. These small, four-eyed amphibious lizards lurk near every pond, stream and shoreline in the Meadows and dart at you the moment you wander too close.
They belong to the Forest monsters faction, so they also join the "Eikthyr rallies the creatures of the forest" raid if you have not yet defeated the first boss.
Why they matter
Despite tiny health and weak bites, Necks are important to early survival. The Neck Tail is one of your first reliable health foods and stays a useful ingredient well into the Black Forest. Start stockpiling tails from day one, or you will be scrambling for them later.
In Norse mythology, the Neck (or Nix) is a shapeshifting water spirit that lures travelers to watery graves. Valheim's version is far less terrifying, as its Runestone lore makes clear.
“Blue-eyed shufflers in muck. Surly and mean-spirited, they will attack on sight and must be destroyed like vermin. Yet no creature is all bad. Their tails are delicious.

Where to Find Necks
Necks spawn only in the Meadows and are always tied to water. Look for them:
- along ocean coastlines
- around inland ponds
- beside rivers and streams
- in marshy areas where the ground stays wet
Rain changes the rules
In clear weather, Necks spawn near water at Common frequency, with a limit of 6 per area. When it rains, they can spawn anywhere in the Meadows below 10 meters altitude, the limit rises to 8 and the frequency jumps to Very Common. That is why you find them wandering through fields far from water on rainy days.
Starred Necks
1-star and 2-star Necks only spawn more than 800 meters from the world center, so venture away from spawn if you want their bigger tail drops. A 1-star Neck has distinctive light blue skin, and a 2-star is even easier to spot.
Raid spawns
The "Eikthyr rallies the creatures of the forest" raid, which can trigger before you defeat
Eikthyr, sends up to 2 Necks at Very Common frequency. Event Necks never have stars.
The best Neck farming spots are streams that connect to the ocean with small ponds alongside them. If you are actively hunting, throw a Spear at the ground near a group: the impact noise aggros creatures in a wide area and brings the Necks to you instead of making you chase them along the shoreline.
How to Fight Necks
Fighting a Neck is not a test of skill. At 5 HP, a single hit from almost any weapon kills one, and even a bare-fisted punch works. The real challenge is catching them before they scurry into the water.
The bite
Necks rush in, take a quick Slash bite, then shuffle around for the 4-second cooldown before biting again. One Neck is harmless, but several biting while you fight
Boars or Greylings can chip away at your health.
Best approach
- Use a sweeping weapon. A
Club or an axe one-shots them, and the swing arc can hit several clustered Necks. - Let them come to you. They scatter when they spot you, and chasing them into deep water wastes stamina. Once they notice you, they charge right in.
- Skip the
Fire Arrows. Necks take 1.5x Fire damage, but that is overkill for a 5 HP creature. It only matters against 15 HP 2-star Necks at low skill levels.
Neck Drops and Drop Rates
Necks drop two items: the Neck Tail, which you want, and the rare
Neck Trophy.
Neck Tail
A 0-star Neck has a 70% chance to drop one Neck Tail, so roughly 3 in 10 kills give nothing. Killing four Necks without a tail is normal RNG, not a bug, and the rate has not been nerfed.
Starred Necks are the real prize: a 1-star drops 2 tails and a 2-star drops 4, with no RNG. A coastal area beyond 800 meters from the world center fills your stock much faster.
Neck Trophy
The trophy has a flat 5% chance at every star level. No recipe uses it, but you can hang it on an Item Stand or use it to set a Ballista to target Necks, though there is little reason to.
Drop Rates by Star Level
| 0-Star Neck Tail | 70% chance (1 tail) |
| 1-Star Neck Tail | 2 guaranteed |
| 2-Star Neck Tail | 4 guaranteed |
| Neck Trophy (all stars) | 5% chance |
| Neck Tail Weight | 0.5 (stacks to 50) |
| Neck Trophy Weight | 0.5 (stacks to 20) |
| Neck Tail Teleportable | Yes |
What to Do with Neck Tails
Neck Tails cannot be eaten raw, but they have three uses that make them worth collecting in bulk.

1. Grilled Neck Tail
Cook a tail on a
Cooking Station or
Iron Cooking Station for a solid early health food (25 Health, 8 Stamina, 2 healing per tick for 20 minutes). It pairs well with
Cooked Boar Meat and
Cooked Deer Meat. Watch the station: leave the tail on too long and it burns to
Coal.
2. Minced Meat Sauce
Once you have a
Cauldron, combine one Neck Tail with
Boar Meat and a
Carrot. The result (40 Health, 13 Stamina, 3 healing per tick for 25 minutes) is a big step up and stays competitive until the Swamp tier.
3. Mead Base: Poison Resistance
Arguably the most important use. Brewed at the
Mead Ketill, it becomes
Poison Resistance Mead, which is essential against the poison of
Blobs,
Oozers and Leeches in the Swamp. Stockpile tails for it long before you set foot there.
Recipes Using Neck Tail
Farming Necks Efficiently
Necks cannot be tamed or bred, so hunting wild Necks is the only way to get tails. These habits make it efficient:
- Build near good water. Put a base or outpost where a river meets the ocean, or where small ponds cluster near the shore.
Portal-linked coastal outposts work if your main base is inland. - Hunt when it rains. Spawns go from Common to Very Common, the limit rises from 6 to 8, and Necks appear further inland. One rainy run beats several clear-weather ones.
- Farm passively. Collect Flint on the shore, chop trees near water, shoot Seagulls for
Feathers and pick up tails on the way. - Make dedicated trips only before the Swamp, when you need a Poison Resistance Mead stockpile.
Can You Tame Necks?
No. Necks cannot be tamed in vanilla Valheim. Tameable creatures include:
Screenshots of friendly Necks come from the Tameable Necks mod, where they eat
Raw Fish. For sustainable meat in vanilla, set up a Boar farm, which supplies Boar Meat and
Leather Scraps without the hunting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why am I not getting any Neck Tail drops?
The Neck Tail has a 70% drop rate, so roughly 3 in 10 Necks drop nothing. Killing 3 or 4 Necks without a tail is normal RNG, not a bug. For guaranteed drops, hunt 1-star or 2-star Necks (800+ meters from the world center), which drop 2 and 4 tails.
Where do Necks spawn the most?
Should I save Neck Tails or cook them all?
Do Necks respawn in the same locations?
Yes. Necks use zone-based spawning near water in the Meadows. While an area is under its spawn limit (6 normally, 8 during rain), new Necks keep appearing, so looping the same coastal areas is a valid farming strategy.
