- Greylings are the weakest hostile creature in Valheim: 20 health and a 5-damage scratch.
- Your starting
Torch is the best weapon: double Fire damage kills one in two swings, and the flame scares them off. - Every kill drops 1
Resin, enough to craft a new Torch with 1
Wood. - Eat food first: two
Raspberries and a
Mushroom make Greylings a non-threat.
Rock-throwing creatures in groups are Greydwarves, not Greylings.
What Is a Greyling?
The Greyling is probably the first hostile creature you meet, and it exists to teach you that this world wants you dead. These small, mossy tree-beings scurry through the forested parts of the Meadows, swinging stubby arms at anything that moves. They belong to the Forest monsters faction, distant and much weaker cousins of the
Greydwarf.
Weak but persistent
Greylings are objectively the weakest aggressive creature in the game; even a naked Viking can punch one down, though three at once while chopping your first tree is another story. Their real trait is persistence: they spawn commonly in Meadows forests, come running at noise, and turn up at the worst moments.
Lore
Runestone lore says Greydwarfs and their Greyling offspring are the corrupted souls of sinners and murderers, "born from rot and rainfall": hollow cysts that draw rock, wood and moss into shambling forms. They should not walk, but when the night comes, they walk.

How to Fight Greylings
Fighting a Greyling is as simple as Valheim combat gets, but a few facts help when you are still punching trees for Wood.
The Torch is your best weapon
Greylings take double damage from Fire. You start with a Torch, which deals 4 Blunt plus 15 Fire per swing, so against a Greyling that is 4 + 30 = 34 effective damage. One hit nearly kills it and a second finishes it. The starting
Club deals only 12 Blunt.
They fear fire
Holding a Torch or standing near a Campfire makes Greylings hesitate and circle instead of attacking, so you can keep them at bay while you work. Veterans carry the Torch in the off-hand with a one-handed weapon for light, deterrence and a ready weapon.
Without a Torch
Any weapon works: even the starting Club kills one in two hits. A Greyling waddles to within 1.2 meters and scratches sideways every 2 seconds. Block or step back after the swing, counter with a hit or two, and it is over. A perfect parry staggers it, so your follow-up deals bonus damage and sends it flying.
The Torch is craftable from just 1 Wood and 1 Resin with no crafting station required. Since Greylings drop Resin, killing the first one essentially funds an unlimited supply of Torches. Veterans always craft a fresh Torch before heading out, since they cannot be repaired and lose durability passively while equipped. Each one lasts about 10 minutes.
Dealing with Greylings: Step by Step
- 1
Equip your Torch
You start with one. The Torch is a one-handed club dealing 4 Blunt and 15 Fire damage, and Greylings take double Fire damage, so it is devastatingly effective. Equip it in your main hand or off-hand alongside a weapon or shield.
- 2
Listen for audio cues
Greylings make distinctive rustling and grunting sounds when they spot you. Your activities like chopping trees, mining, and running all generate noise that attracts them. Keep your camera zoomed out (scroll wheel) and rotate your view frequently to spot them approaching.
- 3
Block, then counter
Wait for the Greyling to swing (every 2 seconds), block with right-click or step back with the S key, then hit them. Two Torch swings or two Club hits will kill them. Timing the block for a parry stuns them and grants bonus damage on your next attack, which is overkill for Greylings but excellent practice for harder enemies.
- 4
Collect the Resin
Every Greyling drops exactly 1 Resin, guaranteed. Pick it up right away: Resin goes into Torches,
Fire Arrows, the
Raft, the
Karve, Sconces and much more, and you will need a lot of it.
“Let all who read me beware of the Greydwarfs, the skulkers in darkness, the soulless ones. They are born from rot and rainfall, they spring like mushrooms from the smoking soil.
Where Greylings Spawn
Greylings spawn only in the forested parts of the Meadows, never in open clearings or on beaches. Unfortunately, the trees are where you spend most of your early game gathering Wood and Resin.
- Spawn limit: 2 at a time.
- Frequency: common, day and night.
- Stars: none from natural spawns. Every wild Greyling is the base version; 1-star and 2-star versions only exist through console commands and look like Greydwarfs.
"The forest is moving..."
This raid becomes possible after you defeat Eikthyr and stays active until you defeat
The Elder. For 120 seconds it sends up to 4 Greylings plus 6 Greydwarfs, a
Greydwarf Brute and a
Greydwarf Shaman at your base, in the Meadows, Black Forest, Swamp or Plains. A Brute at a wooden hut is a rude awakening.
How to Prevent Greyling Spawns Around Your Base
Workbenches
Each Workbench creates a radius where hostile creatures cannot spawn, so overlapping several covers your whole base. The downside: mobs can see them, and wandering enemies destroy exposed Workbenches, opening gaps in your coverage.
Torches and Campfires
The trick experienced players prefer: Campfires suppress spawns just like Workbenches and double as light. A standing Torch placed inside a wooden pole or beam cannot be seen or targeted by enemies, giving permanent spawn suppression that mobs cannot break.
New players often confuse Greylings with Greydwarfs and assume the Meadows is harder than it actually is. If you are getting swarmed by creatures that throw rocks and come in groups of six, you have wandered too close to the Black Forest. Greylings are the small, weak ones that only scratch. If you are dying repeatedly to actual Greylings, eat some food. Two Raspberries and a Mushroom will give you enough HP to shrug off their attacks entirely.
Resin: Why Greylings Are Worth Farming
Every Greyling drops exactly 1 Resin, one of the most consistently useful materials in the game. You never stop needing it:
- Early game: Torches and your first Raft.
- Mid game: Fire Arrows, the
Fermenter and the Karve. - Late game: Sconces, Standing Torches and refueling light sources.
Better Resin sources
Greylings are not the most efficient source:
- Trees: chopping Beech and Birch in the Meadows often drops Resin alongside Wood.
- Greydwarfs: 1 Resin per kill (doubling with each star), plus
Stone, Wood and a chance at a
Greydwarf Eye. Once you reach the Black Forest you will be swimming in Resin.
Before you leave the Meadows, Greylings and tree chopping are your Resin pipeline. Resin stacks to 50, weighs 0.3 and is teleportable, so pick up every piece.
Greyling vs Greydwarf: Know the Difference
Greylings and Greydwarfs are both mossy humanoid tree creatures, and plenty of new players mix them up. They are very different threats:
- Greydwarfs have double the health and nearly triple the damage.
- They throw rocks (10 Blunt) and come in 1-star and 2-star variants.
- They spawn in the far more dangerous Black Forest and also drop Stone, Wood, Greydwarf Eyes and a 5% trophy.
Think of Greylings as the tutorial version of the family: same resistances, same Fire weakness, same general behavior, scaled down to Meadows difficulty. Both join the "The forest is moving..." raid.
After you defeat Eikthyr, Greydwarfs also spawn at night in Meadows forests. If tougher, rock-throwing tree creatures appear at your Meadows base, those are Greydwarfs, and the game is telling you it is time for the Black Forest.
Early Game Survival Tips
Eat food
If Greylings are troubling you in your first hour, you almost certainly haven't eaten. Without food your base health is 25, so a Greyling needs only 5 hits to kill you. Two Raspberries and a Mushroom, found everywhere in the Meadows, make them a non-threat.
Get Rested
Sit near a Campfire under a roof for a few seconds to gain Rested, which greatly improves Stamina regeneration. Build a small shelter with a Campfire as your first priority and rest there before gathering.
Respect the night
Greylings spawn at the same rate day and night, but after Eikthyr falls, Greydwarfs join them in the Meadows after dark. Early on, there is no shame in sleeping through every night in a Bed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you tame Greylings?
Do Greylings have a trophy drop?
No. Greylings have no trophy; their only drop is 1 Resin, guaranteed. For a Greydwarf-family trophy, hunt Greydwarfs in the Black Forest (5%
Greydwarf Trophy chance).
Will Greylings attack my base structures?
Yes. Greylings attack any player-built structure they reach, including walls, Workbenches and Chests. Their 5 damage per hit makes them slow, but left alone they chip away at wood. During "The forest is moving..." the bigger structural threat is the Greydwarf Brute that comes with them.
Why are Greylings immune to Chop and Pickaxe damage?
Despite being made of wood and moss, Greylings (and all Greydwarf variants) are completely immune to Chop and Pickaxe damage types. This means swinging an Axe at them only deals Slash damage, not the bonus Chop damage. It is a game balance decision rather than a lore one. Use Blunt, Slash, Pierce, or ideally Fire weapons instead.
