Knives are the most slept-on weapon class in Valheim. While new players gravitate to swords and maces, the knife quietly offers the highest single-target burst in the game thanks to its 6x backstab multiplier.
Add no movement penalty, tiny stamina costs and attacks fast enough to fit three or four hits into a parry window, and you get a class that rewards skilled play like no other.
The lineup runs from the
Flint Knife you can craft minutes into a new world to Skoll and Hati, dual blades from the Mistlands, and in 1.0 on to the
Nord Dagger line from the Deep North. This guide covers recipes, damage, upgrade costs and the techniques that make a knife user a menace.
- Rush the Abyssal Razor:
Chitin from a Leviathan gives you near
Iron-tier damage with no ore. - Sneak lunges multiply 3x by the 6x backstab: a quality 4
Black Metal Knife hits for 1,332 before skill. - Parry, then punish: never block with a one-handed knife, its block armor is only 2.
- Do not fight Bonemass with a knife. Bring
Frost Arrows or an
Iron Mace. - Skoll and Hati can block for real; the Nord Dagger line takes knives into the Deep North.
Why Knives Are Secretly Overpowered
Most guides call maces the meta and swords the safe pick. They are not wrong, but knives have four advantages that together make a playstyle that is both efficient and fun.
1. The 6x backstab multiplier
Most weapons deal 3x damage to unalerted enemies; knives deal 6x. A sneak lunge with a quality 4 Black Metal Knife deals over 1,300 damage before skill bonuses (the math is below). A Troll has 600 HP: one hit, one kill.
2. No movement penalty
Most weapons slow you by 5% or more when equipped. Knives, like fist weapons, do not. You can sprint at full speed with a knife drawn, chase down fleeing enemies and reposition mid-fight. It sounds minor, but it changes how combat feels.
3. Very low stamina costs
The Flint Knife costs 4 stamina per primary attack, and even Skoll and Hati only 14, against 20 for a
Black Metal Sword. You keep attacking long after other weapons leave you gasping.
4. A fast combo with a 2x finisher
The primary is a three-slash combo in 1.74 seconds, and the third hit deals double damage with 20% extra knockback. You can often land all three during one stagger. The secondary is a forward lunge for 3x damage that can be combined with a jump, an excellent gap-closer.
“If you learn to parry, you will become a destroyer of worlds while wielding a knife. The backstab multiplier after a timed parry is absolutely absurd.
Knives vs. Other Melee Weapons
Pros
- Highest backstab multiplier in the game (6x vs 3x), tied with fist weapons
- No movement speed penalty when equipped
- Lowest stamina cost per attack of any melee weapon
- Fastest attack speed with rapid 3-hit combos
- Dual damage types (Slash + Pierce) bypass single-type resistances
- Special attack doubles as a gap-closer and mobility tool
Cons
- Shortest melee range at 1.8m
- No crowd control; struggles against 3+ enemies
- Terrible against
Bonemass, which resists Slash and very strongly resists Pierce - Ineffective against
Stone Golems and flying enemies - One-handed knives have nearly useless block armor (2)
- Lower raw DPS per hit than swords or maces
Every Knife in Valheim: Stats, Recipes and Progression
Every combat knife shares the same moveset: a 3-hit primary combo and a forward lunge. All weigh just 0.3 and share a 1.8m range with a 60-degree arc on the primary and 45 degrees on the lunge. Every knife can be upgraded to quality 4.
The lineup
- Crafted, Meadows to Mistlands: Flint Knife,
Copper Knife, Abyssal Razor,
Silver Knife, Black Metal Knife, Skoll and Hati. - Deep North (new in 1.0): Nord Dagger, upgradable into the
Thunderblood Dagger or
Frostfire Dagger. - Found, not crafted: the
Wooden Knife (Meadows buried treasure) and the
Voidcaller (dropped by The Void). - Utility: the
Butcher Knife, for slaughtering tamed animals.
Damage is listed per type: a knife showing 20 Slash and 20 Pierce deals 40 total per hit before skill bonuses.

Workbench (level 2): 4 Finewood, 20 Chitin, 2 Leather Scraps
The Abyssal Razor is the biggest power spike in the knife lineup. Mine Chitin from a Leviathan with an
Antler Pickaxe and you can have it before
The Elder. At 40 total damage it rivals Iron-tier weapons without a single Sunken Crypt run. Veterans one-shot
Trolls from stealth with it, and some have played all the way to Yagluth with nothing else.
Upgrade Costs for Every Knife
Upgrading is always worth it: each quality level adds 1 Slash, 1 Pierce, 50 durability and a little stagger. Costs rise with each level (quality 2, 3, then 4), and the station level must rise with them:
- Flint Knife: 2, 4, then 6 Flint. Workbench level must match the quality, but repairs only need level 1.
- Copper Knife: 4, 8, then 12 Copper, plus 8, 16, then 24
Greydwarf Eyes. Forge level matches the quality. - Abyssal Razor: 10, 20, then 30 Chitin. Quality 4 needs Workbench level 5, so farm extra Chitin while you are on the Leviathan.
- Silver Knife: per upgrade 1/2/3 Wood, 5/10/15 Silver, 1/2/3 Leather Scraps and 1/2/3 Iron. Forge level 4 to 6.
- Black Metal Knife: 4, 8, then 12 Black Metal, plus 5, 10, then 15 Linen Thread. Forge level 5 to 7.
- Skoll and Hati: 4, 8, then 12 each of Iron and Black Metal. Black Forge level 2 to 4.

Knife Combat Techniques Most Players Miss
Knife play is more than sneaking up and stabbing. These techniques are the difference between thinking knives are weak and realizing they might be the best weapon in the game.
The parry-backstab combo
A successful parry staggers the enemy, and knives apply the 6x backstab multiplier to staggered enemies, not just unalerted ones. Combined with the 4x parry bonus, one well-timed parry leads to absurd numbers: veterans routinely hit 700+ on Fulings with a single backstab lunge after a parry, even at moderate skill.
The jump-lunge
Jump, then trigger the secondary mid-air. The 5-meter lunge launches you much further than either move alone, closing gaps on ranged enemies or escaping trouble. Land it on an unalerted enemy and the 3x lunge stacks with the 6x backstab for 18x damage.
Sprint and swap
Keep the knife equipped while exploring. You move faster than players holding swords or axes and are always ready for an ambush. Spot an unaware enemy, close at full sprint and land the first hit.
The full combo chain
After a parry, unleash all three primary hits (the third deals 2x), then lunge for 3x if the enemy is still staggered. That dumps enormous burst in under 3 seconds, and the low stamina cost often lets you do it twice.
Never block with a one-handed knife. With 2 block armor you take nearly full damage through the block, so parry or dodge instead. Still learning to parry? Carry a shield, though you lose the secondary attack. The exception is Skoll and Hati: 24-36 block armor and 96-144 parry block armor make it the only knife that can really block.

Skoll and Hati: The Mistlands Knife That Changes Everything
Named after the Norse wolves who chase the sun and moon, these dual blades are crafted at the Black Forge and change what knives can do. At quality 1 they deal 45 Slash and 45 Pierce, 90 per hit and well over the Black Metal Knife.
Real blocking
While every other knife has 2 block armor, Skoll and Hati have 24-36 block armor and 96-144 parry block armor. You can parry Mistlands enemies without a shield, which frees up your whole combat loop.
Trade-offs
They are two-handed, so no shield. Timing differs slightly: 1.72 seconds for the primary and 1.66 for the secondary, against 1.74 and 1.52 for one-handed knives. A sneak lunge deals 270 base damage times 6, 1,620 before skill bonuses.
Seeker Soldiers and Loxen beware.
Knife Progression: When to Upgrade and What to Skip
Not every knife is worth crafting. This is the path experienced players follow.
Flint Knife: optional
Fine for Greylings and
Necks, but the
Flint Spear is a better Meadows weapon: it has range, a throwable secondary, and keeps you out of biting distance. Use the knife for stealth kills on lone
Greydwarfs if you like.
Copper Knife: skip it
It is the least efficient knife. 8 Copper is a real investment when the Black Forest also wants Copper for tools, a Forge and
Bronze gear. Rush the Abyssal Razor instead.
Abyssal Razor: rush it
This is the knife that makes the class click. At 40 total damage it hits close to Iron-tier weapons from a Workbench. You only need an Antler Pickaxe and a boat to reach a Leviathan, and the Chitin needs zero dungeon crawling. A fully upgraded Razor (46 total) carries you through the Swamp and into the Mountains.
Silver Knife: Mountains
It adds a flat 12 Spirit on top of 50 Slash and Pierce, great against
Wraiths and
Ghosts, which are weak to Spirit. Craft it when you start mining Silver.
Black Metal Knife: Plains
The strongest one-handed knife before the Deep North: 68 total at quality 1 and 74 at quality 4. It needs Linen Thread, so it comes after your
Spinning Wheel.
Skoll and Hati: Mistlands
The jump from 68 to 90 damage plus real blocking makes this the first knife that works as a standalone weapon. Make it your priority craft in the Mistlands.
Nord Dagger line: Deep North
New in 1.0, the Nord Dagger is cast at a level 4 Black Forge from
Bloodgold,
Timberwood and the
Mould: Nord Dagger. It gains 5 Slash and 5 Pierce per level and upgrades into the Thunderblood Dagger (Lightning) or Frostfire Dagger (Frost and Fire).

The Bonemass Problem and How to Solve It
Every knife player hits the same wall. Bonemass resists Slash (0.5x) and very strongly resists Pierce (0.25x), exactly what knives deal. Veterans describe knifing him as scratching granite with a toothpick.
The fix: switch weapons
- Frost Arrows and a bow: Bonemass is weak to Frost, so a stack of Frost Arrows from a
Huntsman Bow or better takes him down efficiently. - An Iron Mace: Bonemass is weak to Blunt (1.5x). Keep one in your inventory just for this fight.
This is not a failure of the knife playstyle, just smart play.
Other bosses
Yagluth also very strongly resists Pierce but takes normal Slash, so knives work at roughly half strength there. The Queen and Fader resist Pierce (0.5x) too, so expect slower fights. Eikthyr, The Elder and Moder are fine with the right knife tier, good parry timing and dodge rolls.
Backstab Damage Math: How Knife Multipliers Stack
The secondary attack deals 3x base damage and the backstab multiplier is 6x, and they multiply together. Here is a sneak lunge with a quality 4 Black Metal Knife.
Black Metal Knife Q4 Sneak Secondary Attack
| Base Damage (Slash + Pierce) | 74 | |
| x | Secondary Attack Multiplier | 3 |
| x | Backstab Multiplier | 6 |
| = | Total (before skill bonus) | 1,332 |
That is 1,332 damage from one hit, before your Knives skill adds more. A
Fuling Berserker has 800 HP, so one sneak lunge from a maxed Black Metal Knife kills it outright. Quality 4 Skoll and Hati reach 1,728 on the same calculation; nothing in the Plains or Mountains survives that.
This is why experienced knife players value stealth and positioning over sustained damage. You do not need to trade blows with an enemy you can delete before it knows you exist.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are knives viable for a full playthrough?
Yes. Knives work from start to finish. The real pain point is Bonemass, and to a lesser degree Yagluth, where you should swap to Frost Arrows or a Blunt weapon. For other bosses and regular enemies, knives are often the fastest way to clear content, and the 1.0 Nord Dagger line carries them through the Deep North.
Knives or swords: which is better?
It depends on your playstyle. Swords have more range, more damage per hit and pure Slash. Knives have better burst (backstab), faster attacks, lower stamina costs, two damage types and no movement penalty. For methodical, aggressive combat, pick swords; for hit-and-run stealth with explosive burst, pick knives. Against a staggered target, knives compete with swords because you land more hits in the window.
Should I use the Butcher Knife for combat?
No. The Butcher Knife deals 1,000 Pure damage but only to tamed animals. It does nothing to wild creatures, enemies, or bosses. It exists solely for slaughtering your tamed
Boars and Lox for meat and leather. It does not even have a secondary attack. Keep one at your farm, but never bring it adventuring.
Does the Silver Knife's Spirit damage work on all enemies?
Spirit hits most enemies at normal value, but Wraiths and Ghosts are weak to it and take extra damage. Draugr and
Skeletons take normal Spirit damage. Many living creatures, such as Trolls, Fulings and Lox, are immune. The 12 Spirit stays flat at every quality level, so treat it as a bonus that shines in the Swamp's crypts.
What is the best knife in Valheim 1.0?
The Thunderblood Dagger and Frostfire Dagger, both upgraded from the Deep North Nord Dagger. Skoll and Hati remain the best Mistlands knife and the only knife that can block properly.
