The Himminafl is the most satisfying crowd control weapon in Valheim. Its name means "Heaven's Might" in Old Norse, and it earns it the first time a 360-degree spin sends a pack of Seekers tumbling away in a shower of lightning.
As the fourth atgeir and the Mistlands polearm, it offers massive stagger, huge knockback and a split Pierce and Lightning damage profile.
Here is what most guides skip: the Himminafl is not the highest damage weapon of its tier. It is a utility weapon disguised as a damage dealer. If you want to feel safe in dangerous biomes, it is superb. If you want raw boss-killing power, look elsewhere, or ahead to the new Deep North atgeirs in 1.0.
- The spin attack is a survival tool: it staggers every non-boss enemy around you at full damage.
- Upgrades only raise Lightning damage; Pierce stays at 85.
- You need 14
Mandibles from
Seeker Soldiers to reach quality 4. - Lightning carries it in the Ashlands, where Pierce is often resisted and
Morgens are weak to Lightning. - It is weak against bosses. In 1.0 the Nord, Thunderblood and
Frostfire Atgeirs continue the line.

Black Forge: 10 Yggdrasil Wood, 15 Refined Eitr, 5 Silver, 2 Mandible
How to Craft the Himminafl
The Himminafl is made at a level 1
Black Forge, the Mistlands crafting station. The forge itself costs 10
Black Marble, 10
Yggdrasil Wood and 5
Black Cores. Build the
Black Forge Cooler,
Vice,
Metal Cutter and
Gem Cutter nearby to raise it to level 4 for the upgrades.
Materials
- Yggdrasil Wood: chopped from Yggdrasil Shoots with a
Black Metal Axe or better.
Refined Eitr: made in an
Eitr Refinery, 1
Sap and 1
Soft Tissue per unit.
Silver: stockpiled from the Mountains.- Mandible: the tricky one. Only Seeker Soldiers, the 1,500 HP beetles of the Mistlands, drop it, 1 per kill. Hunt at least 2 for the base craft and 14 for a fully upgraded weapon.
Upgrade costs escalate. Crafting plus all three upgrades costs 10 Yggdrasil Wood, 105 Refined Eitr, 35 Silver and 14 Mandible.
Himminafl Crafting & Upgrade Costs
To farm Mandibles efficiently, set up a small outpost near an Infested Mine in the Mistlands. Seeker Soldiers spawn both in the overworld and inside mines. The mine spawns are more predictable. Bring a Wisp Torch for visibility and lure soldiers into tight corridors where their ground slam is easier to dodge.
Damage Stats and Upgrade Scaling
The earlier atgeirs deal pure Pierce. The Himminafl splits its damage between Pierce and Lightning. Pierce stays at 85 at every quality, while Lightning climbs with each upgrade. Upgrading is really an investment in Lightning, the more valuable damage type for late-game content.
The third hit of the primary combo deals double damage. The real star is the secondary spin: a stagger value of 858 at quality 4 and 300 knockback, enough to stagger virtually every creature in the game.

Combat Style: Mastering the Spin
Primary combo
A three-hit combo over about 3 seconds. The first two stabs are quick (0.84s and 0.86s); the third takes 1.28s but deals double damage with 20% extra knockback. With 3.2 meters of reach and a narrow 20-degree arc, it is a precision tool for lone targets.
Secondary spin
This is where the Himminafl earns its reputation: a full 360-degree sweep with a 3-meter radius and no multi-target damage penalty. Most area attacks in Valheim lose damage per extra target, but the spin hits every enemy for full damage and stagger-locks nearly anything but bosses. The random lightning bolts it spawns are purely visual, but spectacular.
Stamina is the limit
The spin costs 40 stamina, double the primary attack. Treat it as a panic button: chip enemies down with primary attacks, then spin when you are swarmed. Its knockback sends smaller enemies flying up to 20 meters.
Blocking and parrying
The Himminafl can block (64 block armor, 96 at max skill) and parries at 2x (128 to 192). That is weaker than a shield but enough for weaker attacks, so with the spin for crowds and parries for single threats you can do without a shield.
“The Himminafl spin attack is not a damage ability. It is a survival tool. The moment you stop thinking of it as DPS and start treating it as your 'get off me' button, everything clicks.
A common mistake is spamming the spin attack as your primary damage source. At 40 stamina per spin, you will burn through your entire stamina pool in 3-4 uses. Use the three-hit primary combo for sustained damage (the third hit does 2x damage, making it very efficient). Save the spin for emergencies, repositioning, or when you have 3+ enemies in melee range.
Himminafl in the Mistlands
The Mistlands is the Himminafl's home turf:
Ticks: small, fast and numerous, a pain for most weapons. One spin clears a swarm, and Ticks are weak to Pierce.- Seekers: the spin's stagger gives you time to finish them one by one with primary attacks.
- Seeker Soldiers: the weak spot. These 1,500 HP tanks resist Pierce (0.5x), so a quality 4 Himminafl deals about 42 Pierce plus 58 Lightning, roughly 100 per hit. Workable, but slower than the
Mistwalker or
Demolisher.
The glow
The blade's constant sparking gives off a faint blue light in the fog, though far dimmer than a Wisp Torch. It also makes you about 10% easier to detect while sneaking, so switch weapons to slip past a Gjall.
Himminafl in the Ashlands: Still Viable?
Viable, but not optimal. The Ashlands added no polearm, so atgeir users fight there with Mistlands power while other classes get
Flametal upgrades.
Pierce resistance everywhere
Charred Warriors, Charred Marksmen, Charred Twitchers and Morgens all resist Pierce, so your 85 Pierce is roughly halved. Lightning saves you: nothing common in the biome resists it, and Morgens are actually weak to Lightning (1.5x). That 58 Lightning at quality 4 carries your damage in a way pure Pierce weapons cannot.
Why the spin still matters
The moment you land on an Ashlands shore, Charred Warriors, Twitchers,
Voltures and Marksmen tend to converge at once. A reliable area stagger is sometimes worth more than raw damage. Veterans usually carry the Himminafl as a secondary next to a main weapon like the Mistwalker or
Berserkir Axes.
Himminafl: Strengths vs. Weaknesses
Pros
- Best AoE crowd control in the game with the 360-degree spin attack
- No multi-target damage penalty on secondary attack
- Lightning damage is unresisted by most endgame enemies
- Massive stagger (858 at Lv 4) locks down nearly all non-boss creatures
- Long 3.2m reach keeps you safer than shorter melee weapons
- Can block and parry without a shield
- Provides faint blue light in dark areas
- Very light at 2.5 weight
Cons
- Pierce damage resisted by most Ashlands enemies (50% reduction)
- High stamina cost on spin attack (40 per use)
- No Ashlands upgrade: the next atgeirs are the Deep North Nord line
- Two-handed, so no shield pairing
- Weaker single-target DPS compared to swords or axes at the same tier
- -5% movement speed passive penalty
- Faint glow increases sneak detection by ~10%
Himminafl vs Mistwalker: Which Should You Use?
Both are Black Forge weapons that stay relevant in the Ashlands. Short answer: Mistwalker for main damage, Himminafl for crowd control.
Mistwalker strengths
- Slash, which most Ashlands enemies do not resist.
- Frost that slows targets, great for positioning.
- Spirit from quality 2, effective against the undead Charred.
- One-handed, so it pairs with a
Carapace Buckler. A parry into a strong attack can one-shot Charred Twitchers and Charred Marksmen.
Himminafl strengths
It cannot match the Mistwalker's single-target burst, but it clears a crowd instantly. Surrounded by five or more enemies, which happens constantly in the Ashlands, the spin buys space no sword combo can. Many experienced players carry both: the Mistwalker as primary, the Himminafl when things get chaotic.

Using the Himminafl Against Bosses
Bosses are the Himminafl's weakest matchup. Boss fights reward sustained single-target damage, and bosses cannot be stagger-locked, so the spin's main advantage disappears.
Fader
Fader has 25,000 HP, resists Pierce and is immune to Spirit and Fire. Each hit deals about 42.5 Pierce plus 58 Lightning, around 100 total. The Berserkir Axes or the Slayer do far more damage per second. Polearm loyalists can win, but expect a long fight; most veterans switch to dual axes or a two-handed sword here.
Skill matters
Your Polearm skill matters enormously. A level 80 player hits dramatically harder than a level 20 one, so years of atgeir use can outweigh a damage-type disadvantage. The weapon you have trained all game often beats a better one you just picked up.
Polearm Progression: From Bronze to Himminafl and Beyond
The Himminafl is the fourth crafted atgeir:
Bronze Atgeir: introduces the moveset early; its spin can stagger
Trolls in the Black Forest.
Iron Atgeir: carries you through the Swamp and Mountains.
Black Metal Atgeir: the highest raw Pierce of the pre-Deep North atgeirs, dominating the Plains.- Himminafl: trades some Pierce for Lightning and serious visual flair.
If you have used polearms since the early game, the Himminafl is an easy upgrade: you keep your skill, gain an element few enemies resist, and keep the spin. There is still no Ashlands atgeir, but in 1.0 the Deep North adds the
Nord Atgeir and its Thunderblood and Frostfire upgrades, which far outclass it.

Tips, Tricks, and Things the Wiki Does Not Tell You
- The spin deals Pierce: it looks like a slashing sweep, but it is Pierce plus Lightning.
- The glow is always on: it cannot be toggled. It looks great at night and in dungeons but makes sneaking slightly harder.
- Food: for heavy spin use, run health and stamina foods.
Yggdrasil Porridge,
Seeker Aspic and
Magecap are Eitr foods, wasted on a non-magic weapon. In the Ashlands, take the best stamina foods available.
Barley farming: like the Bronze Atgeir, the spin harvests Barley fast, if expensively.
Pair it with the Staff of the Wild
Stagger a group with the spin, then drop a vine trap. The vines root enemies in place, giving you time to reposition and spin again when they break free. Not the fastest way to kill things, but one of the safest.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Himminafl better than the Black Metal Atgeir?
Yes, in most late-game situations. The Black Metal Atgeir has more raw Pierce (105 vs 85), but the Himminafl adds 40-58 Lightning on top. Lightning is rarely resisted in the Mistlands and Ashlands, so the Himminafl's effective damage is higher. The Black Metal Atgeir only wins against enemies that resist Lightning but not Pierce, which is rare.
Can I use the Himminafl against Fader?
Is there an atgeir better than the Himminafl?
Yes, since 1.0. There is still no Ashlands atgeir, but the Deep North adds the Nord Atgeir (
Bloodgold,
Timberwood and the
Mould: Nord Atgeir at a level 4 Black Forge), which upgrades into the
Thunderblood Atgeir or Frostfire Atgeir. All three outclass the Himminafl.
Does the Himminafl's lightning damage proc chain lightning?
