Hare: How to Hunt, Farm & Use Drops in Valheim's Mistlands

The Mistlands Hare is deceptively important. Its meat fuels the biome's best HP foods, and its Scale Hide crafts endgame armor.

Key takeaways
  • Hares spawn anywhere in the Mistlands; a Wisplight or Wisp Lamps make them far easier to spot.
  • Use area damage (Staff of Embers, Ooze Bombs) or spike traps: hitting them is hard, killing them is not.
  • Every kill drops Hare Meat and Scale Hide, both teleportable.
  • Never kill a Hare over water: its drops sink and are lost.
  • Hares cannot be tamed, so every Hare Meat must be hunted.

Why the Hare Matters

When you first spot a huge, scaly rabbit bounding through the Mistlands fog, your instinct is to ignore it. You have Seekers trying to eat your face and Gjall raining fire from above. Veterans will tell you the Hare is one of the most important creatures in the biome anyway.

Two drops you will need constantly

The problem: Hares are absurdly fast, nearly invisible in the fog, and vanish right when you line up your shot.

Where to Find Hares

Hares spawn anywhere in the Mistlands with no special conditions. They are very common, with a limit of 10 per area, so you will meet them regularly. The catch is that the fog hides them until they have already spotted you.

Clear the mist first

The Wisplight is your single best upgrade for Hare hunting. Equip it, or place Wisp Lamps around your hunting grounds, to clear the mist. Without it you are hunting blind on sound cues and luck; with it, you can spot Hares from a distance and plan your approach.

Go for starred Hares

Starred Hares are worth chasing: a 2-star drops four times the meat and hide of a 0-star, as the table shows. Their extra health is still trivial for any Mistlands-tier weapon.

Veteran Tip

Set up Wisp Lamps in flat, open areas of the Mistlands where Hares tend to spawn. Creating a clear sightline with mist removal turns chaotic fog chases into easy sniper practice. Pair this with a nearby Workbench so dropped items do not despawn while you are hunting elsewhere.

Best Hunting Strategies (Ranked)

Hares flee the instant they detect you. Their health is tiny, but their speed will drain your stamina if you chase them in heavy armor. Efficiency matters far more than raw damage: you need the right tool, not your strongest weapon.

1. Staff of Embers (best overall)

The most recommended method among experienced players. The fireball's generous splash damage does not need pinpoint accuracy, and even the edge of the blast is enough to kill a Hare.

2. Spike traps (best passive farm)

Blanket an area where Hares regularly spawn with spike traps, and they will run into the spikes and die on their own. Place a Workbench nearby so drops do not despawn, and check back now and then.

3. Ooze Bombs (best budget option)

Before you have staves, Ooze Bombs are the best area option. They are cheap if you stockpiled Ooze from Blobs and Oozers in the Swamp, and the poison cloud does not care how fast the Hare runs. Toss one in its path.

4. Fenris armor and melee (best speed build)

The Fenris set's movement speed bonus lets you keep pace with fleeing Hares. Pair it with Skoll and Hati or another fast knife for one-hit kills. You give up Carapace-level armor, so clear the area of hostiles first.

5. Huntsman Bow and Wood Arrows (best ranged budget)

The Huntsman Bow uses the least stamina of any bow and still kills Hares in one shot. Wood Arrows keep costs minimal; there is no reason to waste expensive arrows on a 10 HP target. Skip the Spinesnap here: its stamina cost per shot is massive overkill.

6. Biome border farming (fully automated)

Set up a collection area on the border between the Mistlands and Plains. Deathsquitos from the Plains attack and kill Hares that wander near the border. Place a Workbench there to keep drops from despawning.

“

Do not chase Hares in heavy armor. You will waste all your stamina and they will still outrun you. The Mistlands is not a place where you want to be caught with an empty stamina bar.

Common Mistake

Never kill a Hare over deep water. Both Hare Meat and Scale Hide sink when they land in water, meaning your drops are permanently lost. If a Hare is running toward a body of water, let it go rather than risk losing everything. Similarly, avoid killing Hares on steep terrain where items might roll out of reach.

Learned the hard way

Hare Drops

Hares drop Hare Meat, Scale Hide and, 5% of the time, the Hare Trophy. Both the meat and the hide are teleportable, so you can hunt in remote Mistlands spots and portal everything home.

Hare Meat

Hare Meat weighs 1 and stacks to 20. Cooked on a Cooking Station or Iron Cooking Station it becomes Cooked Hare Meat, a decent food on its own. Its real value is in Misthare Supreme and Meat Platter.

Only raw Hare Meat works in those recipes. If you cook it first by accident, it can no longer be used as an ingredient.

Recipes That Use Hare Meat

Both prepared dishes use the same two-step process:

  1. Prepare the uncooked version at a Food Preparation Table.
  2. Bake it in a Stone Oven for 50 seconds. Take it out in time: after 100 seconds it burns to Coal.

Misthare Supreme

Misthare Supreme has the highest health of the Hare dishes and is the one to prioritise. Two of its three ingredients, Jotun Puffs and Carrots, are farmable, so only the Hare Meat comes from the wild. Carrot seeds turn up as early as the Black Forest, and Jotun Puffs grow throughout the Mistlands.

Meat Platter

Meat Platter gives slightly less health but lasts 5 minutes longer. It also needs Lox Meat from the Plains and Seeker Meat from Seekers, so every ingredient has to be hunted. It is still excellent for long expeditions where duration matters.

Meta Strategy

Prioritize Misthare Supreme over Meat Platter for your primary HP food. Both need Hare Meat, but Misthare Supreme only requires farmable Jotun Puffs and Carrots alongside it, while Meat Platter demands Lox Meat and Seeker Meat from hunting. Misthare Supreme also gives 5 more HP. Save your Lox Meat for Lox Meat Pie instead, which is a strong Plains-tier food that does not require Hare Meat at all.

Scale Hide Crafting Uses

Scale Hide is one of the most heavily used Mistlands materials. Everything that needs it:

Start stockpiling early: almost every Mistlands armor piece needs it

Weight
0.5
Stack size

You need a big stockpile to craft and upgrade all of this, so never pass up a Hare.

Resistances and Combat Notes

Hares take normal damage from Blunt, Slash, Pierce, Fire, Frost, Lightning and Poison. They are immune to Spirit, Stagger, Chop and Pickaxe. With nothing to exploit, weapon choice is all about speed and area coverage.

Any Mistlands-tier weapon kills a Hare in one hit, even a 2-star. The challenge is landing that hit on a fast, erratic target, which is why area attacks beat precise single-target weapons. Sniping a fleeing Hare with a crossbow bolt feels great when it lands, but you will miss more than you hit.

Hare Trophy

The Hare Trophy drops 5% of the time at any star level. Mount it on an Item Stand, or load it into a Ballista to target Hares for a fully automated, if slow and resource-hungry, turret farm.

Can You Tame Hares?

No. Unlike Boars, Wolves, Lox and Hens, Hares cannot be tamed or bred. No food calms them and no pen holds them, so every Hare Meat and Scale Hide must come from wild Hares.

That is why good hunting routes and passive setups such as spike traps and border farms are so valuable. Your supply is limited by spawn rates and how quickly you can kill them before they vanish into the fog.

“

The Hare is the Mistlands' version of the Deer, except it is faster, harder to see, and its drops are needed for literally everything.

Trivia

Valheim's Hares look oversized for rabbits, but real hares can grow surprisingly large: the European Brown Hare can top 5 kilograms. The big difference is the reptilian scales instead of fur, which explain the Scale Hide drop and their alien look.

Hare Meat and Scale Hide both sink in water. Kill a Hare near or over water and its drops fall to the bottom for good, so fight them on solid ground.
