Crossbows are the most misunderstood weapon class in Valheim. Most players fire a few shots, get frustrated by the reload and shove it in a chest. That is a mistake. Used correctly, crossbows deliver the highest single-hit damage of any ranged weapon, with bolt trajectories so flat you could use them as a level. The trick is accepting that they are not bows.
Valheim 1.0 has three crossbow tiers, all crafted at the
Black Forge and all firing Bolts:
Arbalest: Mistlands, your first crossbow.
Ripper: Ashlands, with Wound, Storm and Root gemstone variants.
Nord Crossbow: Deep North, upgradable into the
Thunderblood Crossbow or
Frostfire Crossbow.
This guide covers recipes, upgrade costs, bolt choice, skill leveling and tactics.
- Load once, then fire for zero stamina: crossbows are burst weapons, not sustained damage.
- Bolts fly dead straight at 200 m/s, so they are the best answer to
Gjalls and fast targets. - Upgrade costs escalate: a fully upgraded Arbalest takes 40
Wood, 32
Iron and 10 Root in total. - Crossbow skill starts at zero; train it with cheap
Bone Bolts and give it until about level 30. - In 1.0 the Nord Crossbow line replaces the Ripper as the top tier.
How Crossbows Work: Core Mechanics
Stamina up front, free shots after
Loading a bolt takes 3.5 seconds and costs about 3 to 4 stamina at low skill. Once loaded, you can hold, walk, reposition and fire at zero stamina cost. Bows drain stamina the whole time you hold the draw, so this changes how you fight.
Fire rate and skill
With loading, firing and readying combined, you get roughly one shot every 6 seconds at base skill. The Crossbow skill cuts reload time by up to 50% at level 100, and veterans say the weapon starts to feel smooth around level 30.
Perfectly flat shots
Bolts travel at 200 m/s in a straight line with zero drop. If your crosshair is on the enemy, you hit it, at any range. That makes fast targets like
Hares and flying Gjalls far easier than with a bow.
Quirks to plan around
- Jumping or sprinting resets your loading progress, so stay grounded and walk while reloading.
- Bolts unload when you switch weapons, swim or dodge roll, and every re-equip starts a fresh load. This is the community's biggest complaint.
- Firing has recoil that can push you off ledges. Jump just before firing: an airborne shot cancels the recoil.
You can fire a crossbow while blocking. Load the bolt, raise your block, wait for an enemy to approach, and fire without dropping your guard. You cannot block during the loading animation, though, so time it carefully. This works beautifully with the
Staff of Protection shield barrier: cast the barrier, parry an incoming attack, then fire at the staggered enemy for massive damage.
The Arbalest: Your First Crossbow
The Arbalest unlocks as soon as you build a Black Forge in the Mistlands. Its tooltip, "A slow but powerful weapon," is accurate: it hits far harder than the bows you have at this stage, and trades speed to do it.
The recipe uses Wood, Iron and Root. Root, which
Abominations drop 5 at a time, is the only ingredient that may need a trip back to the Swamp if you have not been hoarding it.
Durability
The Arbalest starts at 150 durability and gains 50 per quality level. Still, bring a portal or upgrade before a long expedition or boss fight: a broken crossbow deep in
Seeker territory is no fun.
Upgrade costs escalate
Each upgrade costs more than the last (see the recipes below). Crafting plus all three upgrades totals 40 Wood, 32 Iron and 10 Root.

The Ripper: Ashlands Tier
The Ripper needs a Level 3 Black Forge and Ashlands materials:
Ashwood,
Flametal,
Morgen Sinew and
Bonemaw Tooth. Its higher base Pierce makes it a straight upgrade over the Arbalest, and it starts with 200 durability. Until you reach the Ashlands, the Arbalest serves you well.
Gemstone variants
Like most Ashlands weapons, the Ripper can be transformed at the Black Forge with a gemstone, 8 Flametal and the base Ripper:
Wound Ripper:
Bloodstone.
Storm Ripper:
Iolite, adds 10 Lightning.
Root Ripper:
Jade, adds 10 Poison.
Converting resets the quality to 1, so you must re-upgrade afterward. Plan your materials.
Upgrades
Upgrades escalate the same way. Quality 3 reaches 226 Pierce and 300 durability; Quality 4 reaches 229 Pierce and 350 durability but needs a Level 6 Black Forge. Crafting to Quality 4 totals 40 Ashwood, 32 Flametal, 8 Morgen Sinew and 28 Bonemaw Tooth.

“The crossbow is not a replacement for bows. It is a different weapon for a different purpose. Think of it as a sniper rifle in a world full of shotguns.
Choosing Your Bolts: Ammo Breakdown
Bolt damage is added to the crossbow's base damage, then multiplied by skill, backstab bonus and enemy weaknesses.
- Bone Bolts: the budget option, fine for weak enemies and skill training.
Iron Bolts: a cheap step up for the early Mistlands.
Black Metal Bolts: a big damage jump once
Black Metal flows steadily.
Carapace Bolts: the best option before the Ashlands.
Charred Bolts: the Ashlands bolt.
Bloodgold Bolts: new in 1.0, the Deep North bolt made from Bloodgold and Timberwood.
Ammo economy
Because crossbows fire so slowly, you use ammo at roughly 30% of a bow user's rate. One stack of 100 good bolts lasts most expeditions, freeing the space a bow user needs for two or three stacks of arrows.

The Crossbow Skill: Leveling and Benefits
Crossbows is a separate skill from Bows, so all your
Finewood Bow hours do nothing here. You start at zero in the sixth biome, and the weapon feels clunky at low skill because it genuinely is.
What the skill gives
At level 100, Crossbows raises damage and knockback by up to 141% and halves reload time, so the 3.5-second reload drops to roughly 1.75 seconds. Unlike bows, there is no draw: every shot hits at full power, and only skill raises the damage.
How to level it
You gain 1 XP per bolt that hits a creature. Objects, trees and birds do not count. Use cheap Bone Bolts on anything that crosses your path: Deer, Boar, Greylings. The skill levels slower than Bows because you fire fewer shots, so take every chance to shoot.
A common mistake is comparing the crossbow to bows at equal skill levels. If your Bow skill is 80 and your Crossbow skill is 5, of course the bow feels better. The crossbow's true potential only shows once you have invested time into leveling the skill. Give it until at least skill level 30 before passing judgment.
Combat Strategies and Best Uses
The crossbow excels in three roles. Using it outside them is where most players go wrong.
1. The sneak attack opener
A 3x backstab on the highest base damage of any ranged weapon is devastating. An Arbalest with Carapace Bolts deals 816 damage from stealth at skill 0 (see the calculation below), and the skill bonus pushes that into one-shot territory for most regular enemies. That is why crossbows are the go-to for removing Seekers,
Seeker Soldiers and Gjalls before they notice you.
2. Anti-air
Gjalls are the most dangerous flyers in the Mistlands, and crossbows are widely considered the best counter. Zero drop and high velocity make their bellies easy to hit from extreme range, and you need far fewer hits than with a bow.
3. A stamina-free sidearm
Fight with your melee weapon, and when stamina runs low, back off, swap to the crossbow and load it (a few stamina) for a big hit while stamina regenerates. Swapping unloads any bolt, so always load after the swap. Veterans on melee builds often carry one just for this.
Mage builds
Open with a sneak shot, fire a follow-up, then switch to your staff while the crossbow would otherwise be reloading. Return to the crossbow whenever your Eitr runs dry.

| Arbalest Base Pierce | 200 | |
| + | Carapace Bolt Pierce | 72 |

Crossbow vs Bow: Honest Comparison
Pros
- Highest single-hit ranged damage in the game
- Zero projectile drop: perfectly flat bolt trajectory
- Minimal stamina usage: load once, fire for free
- Low ammo consumption (roughly 30% of bow usage)
- Slower weapon degradation than bows
- Can fire while blocking
Cons
- Very slow fire rate (6 seconds between shots at base)
- Bolts unload when switching weapons, swimming, or dodge rolling
- Skill levels painfully slowly
- No elemental bolts (elements come from the
Ripper variants and Nord line instead) - Two-handed: cannot use a shield simultaneously
- -5% movement speed passive penalty
- Jumping or sprinting cancels reload progress
Building the Black Forge
Every crossbow needs a Black Forge, built from a Workbench with 10
Black Marble, 10
Yggdrasil Wood and 5
Black Cores:
- Black Marble: mined from Dvergr structures and ruins;
Dvergr Mages and Rogues also drop 1 half the time. - Yggdrasil Wood: chopped from the giant ancient roots across the Mistlands.
- Black Cores: found inside Infested Mines.
The forge needs a roof and enough cover, like other stations. The
Black Forge Cooler,
Vice,
Metal Cutter and
Gem Cutter upgrade it to Level 5. The Ripper needs Level 3 (Cooler and Vice), and the Nord Crossbow line needs Level 4.
Black Forge & Upgrades
Should You Use a Crossbow or a Bow?
Dedicated archers
Your Bow skill is probably 60 to 80 by the Mistlands, an advantage no crossbow overcomes quickly. Keep your Spinesnap or Draugr Fang as the main weapon and carry a crossbow for sneak openers and Gjall hunting.
Melee players
The crossbow is the better pick. A sneak opener needs little skill, the low ammo use means less inventory juggling, and the stamina model suits a melee-first approach. Carry one stack of good bolts, open from range, then switch to your sword or mace.
Mages
Bows compete with staffs for stamina; crossbows only compete for time. Mage builds already have downtime while Eitr regenerates, and the crossbow fills it.
The best answer: both
For most late-game players, carry a bow for sustained fire with elemental arrows (
Poison Arrows,
Frost Arrows) and a crossbow for burst openers and high-value targets.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I keep a bolt loaded when I switch to another weapon?
No. Bolts unload whenever you switch weapons, swim or dodge roll, and every re-equip starts a fresh load. It is the biggest drawback of crossbows and there is no way around it.
Do crossbow bolts have gravity drop like arrows?
No. Bolts travel in a straight line at 200 m/s with zero drop. Where your crosshair points is where the bolt hits, at any distance.
What is the best bolt to use?
Use the highest tier you can craft in quantity. In the Mistlands, Carapace Bolts are the sweet spot; in the Ashlands, Charred Bolts; in the Deep North, Bloodgold Bolts. Keep Bone Bolts for skill training.
Is the Ripper worth crafting if I already have a maxed Arbalest?
Yes. A Quality 1 Ripper already beats a Quality 4 Arbalest on base Pierce, has more durability, and the gemstone variants add Lightning or Poison. If you are in the Ashlands, it is worth the materials.
What is the best crossbow in Valheim 1.0?
The Thunderblood Crossbow has the most raw damage (274 Pierce plus 45 Lightning at Quality 1). The Frostfire Crossbow trades Pierce for Frost and Fire. Both are upgrades of the Nord Crossbow, crafted at a Level 4 Black Forge.
How do I avoid the recoil knockback when firing?
Jump just before firing. Shooting while airborne cancels the recoil, which matters near cliffs and edges.
