Your first Leviathan will not look like much: a small rocky island in the Ocean, dotted with strange barnacles and a few trees that refuse to be chopped. Peer into the water at night, though, and two glowing eyes stare back from the deep. That island is alive, and it holds
Chitin.
Leviathans are passive, immovable and indestructible. You cannot fight, tame or build on them. You can mine the Abyssal Barnacles on their backs for Chitin, which crafts some impressively strong early gear. The catch: Leviathans are finite, and once one submerges it never comes back.
- Find Leviathans by sailing through open Ocean between islands, not along coastlines.
- Every Pickaxe hit has a 10% chance to start the dive, so use the best Pickaxe you have.
- Weaken every barnacle first, then break them all in one fast pass.
- Always keep a third of your stamina for the swim back.
- Spend your first 30 Chitin on the Abyssal Harpoon; the whole Chitin set costs 115.
How to Find Leviathans
Leviathans are placed when the world is generated; they never spawn later. Each 64x64 meter zone of full Ocean has a 1% chance to hold one, and the water must be at least 30 meters deep. They are rare, but every world has several dozen.
Sail the open water
Finding one comes down to a lot of sailing. The Ocean biome only starts well away from shore, so coast-hugging will not work.
- Sail between islands rather than around them, cutting through open water.
- Watch the opening fly-over when you start a new world: some players spot one there.
- Mark every Leviathan on your map immediately. They never move, so you can come back better prepared.
Clusters
Two or three sometimes share the same stretch of ocean. Hop between them, starting with the one furthest from your boat so you work your way back.
To skip the searching, the seed map at valheim-map.world shows every Leviathan for your seed under its Miscellaneous tab. There is no shame in it after hours of empty sailing.
Veterans will tell you to circumnavigate every island you visit by boat. This naturally maximizes your open-ocean coverage and typically turns up 2-3 Leviathans over an extended sailing trip. If you've put 70 hours into Valheim without finding one, you simply haven't sailed far enough from shore.
How Mining Works: The Submersion Mechanic
Each Leviathan carries exactly 21 Abyssal Barnacles with 40 HP each. Only Pickaxe damage (and technically Lightning) can break them; every other damage type does nothing.
The dive timer
- Disturbed: every Pickaxe hit has a 10% chance to make the Leviathan screech and shake. This starts a 20-second countdown, and further shakes do not change it.
- Submersion: after 20 seconds, a louder screech means the dive has begun. You have roughly 25 seconds before the body is fully under.
- The lift: for the first few seconds the Leviathan rises slightly before accelerating down past 1 meter per second, which can buy a couple of extra swings.
Per hit, not per barnacle
Many players think breaking a barnacle triggers the dive. It is any Pickaxe hit on any barnacle. Fewer total hits means more Chitin, which is why a better Pickaxe matters so much.

Which Pickaxe to bring
The
Antler Pickaxe needs at least three hits per barnacle, giving the Leviathan the most chances to dive.
Bronze or
Iron cuts that to two.
An
Iron Pickaxe upgraded to quality 3 (43 Pickaxe damage) can break a 40 HP barnacle in a single hit once your Pickaxes skill is high.
“Once a Leviathan submerges, it's gone forever. There are no respawns. Every hit of your Pickaxe is a roll of the dice, so make each encounter count.
How to Mine a Leviathan Efficiently
- 1
Prepare before you sail
Eat high-stamina food and get the Rested buff: you need stamina for mining, running across the Leviathan's back and possibly swimming back. Bring your best Pickaxe. Consider removing your armor to move faster on its surface.
- 2
- 3
Weaken all barnacles before breaking any
This is the most important tactic. Go round the whole Leviathan hitting each barnacle once or twice without breaking it, then make a fast second pass breaking them all. Start with the barnacles furthest from your boat so the final pass brings you back to your escape route.
- 4
When you hear the screech, stay calm
The first screech still leaves 20 seconds of mining, so keep breaking barnacles while watching your stamina and position. After the second, louder screech you have roughly 10 seconds before things get dangerous. Walk rather than run to save stamina. If you worked back toward the boat, you can step aboard without getting wet.
- 5
Always reserve stamina for the swim
Out of stamina in the water, you drown for 5% of your max HP per second: a 20-second death timer at full health, far from land. Keep at least a third of your stamina bar in reserve, and carry a
Minor Stamina Mead as insurance.
The most common mistake new players make is mining barnacles one at a time to completion. Each hit triggers a 10% submersion check, so fully mining one barnacle (multiple hits) before moving to the next wastes your opportunity. The "weaken all, then break all" strategy dramatically increases your total Chitin haul per Leviathan.
What Chitin Crafts
Chitin crafts three items, all worth making. It weighs 2, stacks to 50 and is teleportable, so you can portal home with a full haul.
Abyssal Razor
The Abyssal Razor gives near iron-tier damage without a single piece of ore, from a level 2
Workbench, before you even reach the Swamp. Its 6x backstab multiplier makes sneak attacks devastating, and the third hit of its 3-hit combo deals double damage.

Only three knives out-damage it, and all come much later: the
Silver Knife, the

Skoll and Hati.
Abyssal Harpoon
The Abyssal Harpoon latches onto non-boss creatures and drags them toward you. Its damage is negligible, so it is a utility tool, not a weapon. Use it to:
- Move tamed animals into pens.
- Drag Sea Serpents to shore so their drops do not sink.
Serpent Scale and the
Serpent Trophy both sink in deep water.
It needs a level 2 Workbench and cannot be upgraded.
Fins of Destiny
Fins of Destiny is an Ocean-tier trinket from a level 1 Forge. At 10 Adrenaline it triggers +50% swim speed and -80% swim stamina use for 2 minutes. It also needs
Serpent materials, so it is a natural follow-up once the Harpoon has you farming Serpents.

How Much Chitin Do You Need?
Chitin is finite, so budget it:
- Abyssal Razor: 20 to craft, 80 total at level 4 (20 + 10 + 20 + 30)
- Abyssal Harpoon: 30, no upgrades
- Fins of Destiny: 5
- Everything, fully upgraded: 115
What one Leviathan gives
All 21 barnacles yield 63 to 84 Chitin, but clearing every one on a first attempt is unlikely. Expect around 40 to 50 per encounter, so plan on two or three Leviathans for the full set.
Spend it on the Harpoon first
Craft the Abyssal Harpoon first. It lets you farm Serpents properly, which opens up
Serpent Stew, the
Serpent Scale Shield and eventually Fins of Destiny. The Razor is excellent, but if you only get one Leviathan's worth, the Harpoon has more long-term value.
Chitin After the Leviathans Are Gone
Once every Leviathan is gone, the only source left is fishing. A
Coral Cod caught with
Heavy Fishing Bait has a 13.33% chance to drop 1-2 Chitin. The bait is crafted from
Fishing Bait and a Serpent Trophy, so this is slow and unreliable. Do not waste Chitin on items you will not use.
The Cheese: Logging Out to Save the Leviathan
There is one way to mine every barnacle, using a quirk of the save system. When the Leviathan starts sinking, log out. When you log back in, it has stopped sinking and returned to normal, and you can keep mining. It is the only known way to guarantee all 21 barnacles.
Whether that is an exploit or a fair answer to a frustrating random mechanic is up to you. It works, and it helps most when you are short on Chitin and Leviathans.
Norse Mythology: The Hafgufa
Valheim's Leviathan is based on the Hafgufa, a sea creature so large that sailors mistook it for an island. The biblical Leviathan is a different creature, closer to Valheim's Serpent.
Norse texts describe the Hafgufa as whale-like or turtle-like, which matches the hidden full model below the waterline. Those two glowing eyes at night are a reminder that you are standing on something very much alive.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do Leviathans respawn after they submerge?
No. Leviathans are generated with the world and a submerged one is gone for good. Plan your mining trips carefully.
Can I build on a Leviathan?
No. You cannot place structures on a Leviathan, and the trees and rocks on its back are decorative: they cannot be chopped or mined.
Which Pickaxe should I use for mining barnacles?
Any Pickaxe works, since barnacles have no tool tier requirement. A
Bronze Pickaxe or Iron Pickaxe breaks them in fewer hits than the Antler Pickaxe, which means fewer 10% submersion rolls and more Chitin. Bring the best one you have.
Is Chitin teleportable?
Yes. Unlike metal ores, Chitin goes through portals, so you can mine a Leviathan, portal home and craft right away.
Can I get Chitin without finding a Leviathan?
Yes, but slowly. A Coral Cod caught with Heavy Fishing Bait has a 13.33% chance to drop 1-2 Chitin, and the bait needs a Serpent Trophy to craft, so it is not a reliable main source.
