If you thought the Serpent was bad, meet its bigger, angrier cousin. The Bonemaw patrols the boiling waters around the Ashlands and is usually the first thing that tries to kill you before you reach the fiery continent.

It has nearly three times a Serpent's health and a ranged fireball attack that burns and poisons. It is also one of the most rewarding hunts in the game: its teeth feed top Ashlands weapons and its meat is a strong health food you can cook with gear you already own.

Key takeaways
  • Bring Frost: Frost Arrows on a Spinesnap or a Staff of Frost. Fire and Spirit damage do nothing.
  • Find Bonemaws in the boiling ocean around the Ashlands; you can hunt them from a boat before you ever land.
  • Stay 25-30 meters away and steer sideways when it rears up to spit three fireballs.
  • Meat and teeth float, but the trophy sinks, so kill it in shallow water if you want the trophy.
  • About 84 Bonemaw Teeth craft and fully upgrade the Ash Fang, Ripper and Splitnir.

Where to Find the Bonemaw

Bonemaws spawn only in the ocean around the Ashlands. You can recognise those waters by the darker color on the map and the fact that the sea is boiling. Swimming in it starts killing you after about 10 seconds, with the screen edges turning orange as you overheat.

Which boat to use

Only the Drakkar can sail these waters safely for long. The Karve and Longship take damage from the boiling sea and will eventually be destroyed, so carry repair materials if you hunt from one.

How common they are

The wiki lists them as rare, but players find them far more common than regular Serpents. Expect one roughly every 20 minutes of sailing in Ashlands waters, often sooner. Many players meet 1-2 on the first trip to the coast, and hugging the shoreline can turn up 10 or more in one voyage.

Hunt them before you land

You do not need to reach the Ashlands to start farming. With a Longship and Frost Arrows you can sail to the Ashlands boundary and hunt, stockpiling Bonemaw Meat and Bonemaw Teeth before you set foot in the biome.

Meta Strategy

Smart Vikings hunt Bonemaws before ever setting foot in the Ashlands. Sail to the Ashlands ocean boundary with a Longship and Frost Arrows, farm several Bonemaws, then head home. You will arrive in the Ashlands with a stack of endgame health food and enough teeth to start crafting Black Forge weapons immediately. This is one of the best pre-Ashlands preparations you can make.

Veteran strategy

Attack Patterns and How to Survive

The Bonemaw has two attacks, and you will almost always face them from a boat.

Spit (10-30 meters)

The dangerous one. The Bonemaw dips, then swoops out of the water and launches three fireballs that inflict Burning and Poison. They fly at 20 meters per second with a 10-20 degree spread, which makes them hard to dodge on a boat. Taking several hits from one barrage stacks the damage-over-time effects fast.

Bite (3 meters)

Simple but brutal. It draws its head back and lunges in an 80-degree arc for 140 Slash. The cooldown is only 10 seconds and it actively chases you to stay in melee range, so distance is your best defense.

Compared with the Serpent

A regular Serpent has a single 70 Slash bite and no ranged attack. The comparison below shows how big the step up is.

“

The first time a Bonemaw rises from the boiling water and hurls three fireballs at your Longship, you understand why the Ashlands earned its reputation. This is not the Ocean biome anymore.

How to Kill a Bonemaw

  1. 1

Choose Your Weapon: Frost Is King

The Bonemaw takes 1.5x Frost damage, so Frost Arrows from a Spinesnap are the best all-round option. The Staff of Frost is even stronger if you have invested in magic, especially once the Bonemaw is close. Skip Fire Arrows and fire weapons: the Bonemaw is immune to Fire. It is also immune to Spirit, though the Frost part of the Mistwalker's damage still hits its weakness.

  2. 2

Engage From Your Boat at Medium Range

Most Bonemaw fights happen from your boat. Keep the boat moving to make the fireball spit harder to land. Stay at the edge of its spit range (around 25-30 meters) and pepper it with Frost Arrows. When it dives and swoops up for the spit attack, that is your cue to dodge. Turn the rudder hard to one side. The three fireballs have a spread, so lateral movement is your best defense.

  3. 3

Alternatively, Shoot From the Ashlands Shoreline

If you are already on the Ashlands coast, you can often spot Bonemaws swimming near shore. Aggro them with a bow shot and fight from solid ground, where dodging fireballs is much easier. When they die near shore, you can quickly wade in to grab the floating drops. Just watch your heat meter and do not stay in the boiling water longer than a few seconds.

  4. 4

    Bring Ship Repair Materials

If you are sailing in Ashlands waters and fighting multiple Bonemaws in a single trip (which is likely), your Longship will take damage. Always carry extra Wood and crafting materials to repair mid-voyage. Multiple encounters without repairs can leave you stranded in boiling water, and that is a death sentence.

  5. 5

    Collect Your Drops Carefully

Bonemaw Meat and Bonemaw Teeth float, so you can sail over them to collect. The Bonemaw Trophy sinks. If you want it, kill the Bonemaw in shallow water near the coast, or use the Abyssal Harpoon to drag it into the shallows. Regular Serpents are worse: only their meat floats.

Common Mistake

A common mistake is assuming the Bonemaw Trophy floats like the other drops. It does not. Kill Bonemaws in shallow water near the Ashlands coast if you want the trophy. Some players have even set up coastal bases specifically near Bonemaw spawn points to farm trophies efficiently.

Drops and What They Are Used For

Every kill gives 6-7 Bonemaw Meat, 8-9 Bonemaw Teeth and a 33% chance at a Bonemaw Trophy. Bonemaws never have stars, so the drops are the same every time.

Bonemaw Meat: your first Ashlands health food

Cook it on an Iron Cooking Station to get Cooked Bonemaw Meat, which gives 90 health, 30 stamina and 6 healing per tick for 25 minutes. That is one of the highest health values in the game, and it needs no Ashlands upgrades: just the Iron Cooking Station you have had since the Swamp.

That makes it the bridge food between the Mistlands and the Ashlands. Farm it while scouting by boat, cook it at home and arrive with a strong health food already packed. It has no further recipe. The downside: each piece weighs 10, so do not haul more than you need.

Bonemaw Tooth: Ashlands weapon crafting

Bonemaw Teeth go into three Black Forge weapons: the Ash Fang bow, the Ripper crossbow and the Splitnir spear. The Ripper and Splitnir also have magical variants. Teeth weigh only 2 each, so they are far easier to carry than the meat.

How many teeth you need

Each upgrade to the next quality level costs the same number of teeth as the base recipe. Crafting and upgrading to quality 4 (the maximum) takes:

  • Ash Fang: 35 Bonemaw Teeth
  • Ripper: 28 Bonemaw Teeth
  • Splitnir: 21 Bonemaw Teeth

That is 84 teeth for all three, or roughly 10 Bonemaw kills. Given how often they spawn, one long sailing trip covers it.

Best Weapons and Loadout for Bonemaw Hunting

Bonemaw fights happen at range from a boat or the shoreline, so ranged weapons come first:

  • Spinesnap with Frost Arrows: the standard choice. Frost Arrows exploit the weakness and also slow a Bonemaw chasing your boat.
  • Staff of Frost: the magic user's best tool. Sustained Frost damage tears through its health quickly, especially at close range, and is the fastest kill method if you have invested in Eitr.
  • Abyssal Harpoon: for trophy farming. Harpoon the Bonemaw, drag it toward shallow water and finish it there so you can loot the sinking trophy. Do not pull it directly onto land, as it may clip through terrain.

What to avoid

The Bonemaw is immune to Fire and Spirit, so Fire Arrows, the Staff of Embers and Spirit-based weapons are wasted on it.

Trivia

The game files contain an unused item, BonemawSerpentScale, that can only be spawned with the developer console and has no use. The developers probably planned for the Bonemaw to drop scales like the Serpent before switching to the Bonemaw Tooth. Unlike Serpent Scales, which make a shield, Bonemaw Teeth go only into weapons.

Like the Serpent, the Bonemaw never spawns with stars. Every one has the same 1,100 HP and stats, which makes farming predictable.
