Guck. - Maxing it costs 40 Ancient Bark, 80 Silver, 14 Deer Hide and 22 Guck in total.
- Pair it with
Frost Arrows for three damage types per shot, but switch to
Poison Arrows for Moder, who is immune to Frost. - It stays strong into the Plains; the
Spinesnap replaces it in the Mistlands.
The Draugr Fang is the best bow you can craft in the mid-game, and it stays competitive well beyond. It is the fourth bow in the progression and the first to add Poison damage to every arrow you fire. What really sets it apart is how that built-in poison combines with different arrows for multi-damage shots.
Its flavour text reads "Dark wood strung with glistening sinew. A vicious thing." It also glows faint green, which looks great but costs a little stealth. Veterans say the trade is worth it: paired with the right arrows, this bow carries you from the Mountains through the Plains.

Forge (level 2): 10 Ancient Bark, 20 Silver, 2 Deer Hide, 10 Guck
How to Craft the Draugr Fang
You need a level 2 Forge and materials from the Swamp and the Mountain, so gathering them takes you through some of the most dangerous mid-game areas.
Silver (the main hurdle)
Silver Ore is buried in the Mountains, and you normally find it with the
Wishbone from Bonemass. Two workarounds exist:
- Surface veins: oddly shaped rock outcrops jutting from mountainsides.
Stagbreaker trick: slam it on Mountain terrain and watch for "Too hard" messages that reveal buried Silver.
Swamp and Meadows materials
- Ancient Bark: chop the large, twisted Ancient Trees found throughout the Swamp.
- Deer Hide: from Meadows
Deer; you likely have a stockpile. - Guck: mine the glowing green Gucksacks hanging from Swamp trees with an axe or pickaxe. Ranged attacks can't damage them, so build scaffolding or ladders.
Abominations also drop Guck.
Draugr Fang Crafting & Upgrade Costs
A surprisingly common mistake is trying to craft the Draugr Fang with
Iron instead of Silver. The bars look similar in your inventory, and many players have gone through the frustration of gathering everything only to realize they brought the wrong metal. The Huntsman Bow is the Iron Age bow. The Draugr Fang is the Silver Age bow. Double-check your bars before making the trip to your Forge.
Damage Stats and Upgrade Scaling
Every shot deals Pierce plus Poison. The Poison scaling matters most: it quadruples from quality 1 to quality 4, turning the built-in poison from a bonus into a real damage source.
Compared with the Huntsman Bow
The Draugr Fang has 5 more Pierce than the Huntsman Bow at every quality, plus Poison on top, so it clearly wins on total output. It also has double the knockback, which helps keep enemies at range. The Huntsman Bow draws slightly cheaper at 8 stamina per second versus 10, a difference that rarely matters.

“The Draugr Fang is the first bow in Valheim with built-in elemental damage. Every bow before it is just a delivery system for your arrows. This one adds something extra to every single shot, and that changes everything about how you think about arrow selection.
Best Arrow Pairings: The Damage Stacking Guide
Most guides get this wrong. The bow's Poison stacks with a Poison Arrow's on the initial hit, combining into one stronger poison effect. Poison over time does not stack between arrows, though: each new arrow cancels the previous poison and restarts the duration. Rapid-firing Poison Arrows wastes the ticks from earlier shots.
Frost Arrows: the default pick
Frost Arrows deal 26 Pierce and 52 Frost. From the Draugr Fang you get three independent damage types per shot: Pierce, Poison from the bow and Frost from the arrow. Each is checked against a different resistance, so enemies struggle to defend against all three. Frost Arrows also slow targets, which helps when kiting.
Poison Arrows: for Moder
Moder is immune to Frost, so Frost Arrows are wasted on her. Switch to Poison Arrows. Boss fights mean slower, deliberate shots with time for the full poison to tick, so the stacked bow-and-arrow poison reaches its full potential.
Needle Arrows: for groups
For rapid fire,
Needle Arrows deal 62 pure Pierce each, steady damage with no wasted poison ticks. Ideal for punching holes through Fulings.

Gathering Materials: The Full Supply Chain
A quality 4 Draugr Fang takes 40 Ancient Bark, 80 Silver, 14 Deer Hide and 22 Guck in total. Upgrade costs climb with each level, and Silver is by far the biggest investment.
Silver
- Defeat Bonemass for the Wishbone, which detects buried Silver in the Mountains.
- Smelt each Silver Ore into one bar with a
Smelter and
Coal. - Silver can't go through portals, so cart or sail it home, or build a small smelting outpost with a portal near your mine.
Skipping Bonemass? Search high in large Mountain biomes for surface veins, or use the Stagbreaker method above.
Guck and Ancient Bark
Sail Swamp coastlines looking for glowing Gucksacks on large trees. Build a
Workbench nearby, scaffold up with wood floors and mine them; each sack drops a few Guck. Abominations drop Guck too. Ancient Bark comes from the twisted, mossy Ancient Trees in any Swamp.
Draugr Fang vs Huntsman Bow: Is the Upgrade Worth It?
Absolutely. It is not a marginal stat bump but a different weapon. The Huntsman Bow deals pure Pierce and depends entirely on your arrows for elemental variety. The Draugr Fang adds Poison to every arrow, giving you multi-type damage whatever you load.
Draugr Fang: Honest Pros & Cons
Pros
- Built-in Poison damage on every arrow, the first bow to offer it
- Highest Pierce damage of any bow until
Spinesnap - Triple damage types possible with
Frost Arrows (Pierce + Poison + Frost) - 20 Knockback helps maintain distance from enemies
- 3x Backstab multiplier rewards stealth archers
- Faint green glow looks fantastic
Cons
- Expensive to craft: requires
Silver from Mountains and
Guck from Swamps - 10 Stamina/s draw cost is higher than Huntsman Bow's 8/s
- Green glow makes you slightly more detectable while sneaking
- -5% movement speed penalty (same as
Huntsman Bow) - Requires Forge Level 2-5 for full upgrade path
Some experienced players skip Iron Armor entirely and rush straight to Silver gear. The strategy is to enter your first Swamp crypt, mine just enough Iron for an
Iron Pickaxe and crafting station upgrades, then head to the Mountains to mine Silver. You can craft the Draugr Fang and Wolf Armor, then return to the Swamp fully overgeared for that biome. This saves all your remaining Iron for Plains-tier crafting later. It is a high-risk, high-reward approach that requires careful Mountain survival, but it pays off enormously in resource efficiency.
Combat Tips and Stealth Considerations
Stealth openers
The 3x backstab makes fully charged sneak shots deadly; they one-shot many mid-game enemies. The green glow makes you slightly easier to detect while sneaking. At a reasonable distance it rarely matters, but you may notice it attempting point-blank shots in dark dungeons.
Always fully charge
Attacks take 0.8 seconds plus a 2.5-second draw for full charge. Full charge raises accuracy, damage and arrow speed. Half-drawn shots are weaker and less accurate, wasting arrows and the Poison application. The knockback buys breathing room between draws.
Emergency parries
The bow can block and parry: 3 block armor at 0 skill (4.5 at 100) and a 1.5x parry bonus, for 4.5 parry block armor at base (6.75 at max). Don't rely on it, but if a
Fuling catches you up close with no time to swap, a well-timed parry can save your life.
Where the Draugr Fang Fits in Bow Progression
The Draugr Fang is the fourth bow:
Crude Bow,
Finewood Bow, Huntsman Bow, then the Draugr Fang in the Silver Age. After it come the Spinesnap (Mistlands), the
Ash Fang and its variants (Ashlands) and, new in Valheim 1.0, the
Nord Bow and its Thunderblood and Frostfire variants.
Its strength is longevity. Many players keep it into the Plains, because built-in Poison stays relevant and the Frost Arrow pairing is one of the strongest ranged setups before the Mistlands. The Spinesnap eventually wins on raw damage, but by then the Draugr Fang has more than earned its keep.
Valheim Bow Progression
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Draugr Fang poison stack with Poison Arrows?
Yes, on the initial hit. The bow's poison and the arrow's poison combine into a single stronger poison effect with more damage and more ticks. However, successive arrows do not stack their poison DoT. Each new arrow overwrites the previous poison timer, so rapid-firing Poison Arrows wastes damage from earlier ticks.
Can I craft the Draugr Fang without killing Bonemass?
Yes, but it is harder. You need Silver, which is normally found using the Wishbone dropped by Bonemass. Without the Wishbone, you can still find surface Silver Veins on mountainsides or use the Stagbreaker ground-slam technique to detect buried veins. Silver mines normally regardless of boss progression.
Does the green glow actually affect stealth?
Yes, the faint green glow makes you slightly easier for enemies to detect while sneaking. In practice, this is a minor effect and rarely matters at normal engagement distances. If you are attempting very close-range backstabs, you might notice enemies detecting you slightly earlier than with an unlit bow.
What are the best arrows for the Draugr Fang against Sea Serpents?
Frost Arrows are the usual choice.
Serpents are weak to Frost (1.5x damage) but resistant to Poison, so the arrow's Frost does the heavy lifting while the bow's Poison is reduced. Draugr Fang with Frost Arrows is a strong Serpent hunting setup.
