Splitnir is the most polarizing weapon in the Ashlands. It is the Ashlands-tier spear, forged at the
Black Forge from Ashlands materials, and the payoff for players who have stuck with spears since the
Flint Spear. Many players dismiss it because "everything in the Ashlands resists Pierce". That is an oversimplification, and it costs spear mains a genuinely strong weapon.
What it does
The base form deals pure Pierce, and its secondary attack throws the spear for 1.5x damage, a ranged opener few melee weapons can match. Add a 3x backstab multiplier, a fast 0.68-second thrust and three gemstone variants, and Splitnir becomes one of the most versatile Ashlands weapons.
- Craft it at a level 3 Black Forge from
Ashwood,
Flametal,
Asksvin Hide and
Bonemaw Tooth. - Apply your gemstone before upgrading: every variant starts again at quality 1.
Splitnir the Storming (
Iolite) is the best general pick, since Lightning gets past the Pierce resistance of many Ashlands enemies.- Open fights with a thrown spear, ideally a backstab, then finish with fast thrusts.
- It is no longer the top spear: the 1.0
Nord Spear family outclasses it in the Deep North.

How to Craft Splitnir
Splitnir is forged at the Black Forge. You need it at level 3 for the base craft, and each quality upgrade needs one more Black Forge level, up to level 6 for quality 4.
Where the materials come from
- Ashwood: chopped from Ashlands trees.
- Flametal: smelted from
Flametal Ore in a
Blast Furnace. - Asksvin Hide: 2 from every
Asksvin you kill. - Bonemaw Tooth: 8 to 9 per Bonemaw, the burrowing worms that ambush you from below.
Bonemaws are the bottleneck. They are not common and are tricky to fight, so collect teeth early. A fully upgraded base Splitnir takes 40 Ashwood, 42 Flametal, 8 Asksvin Hide and 21 Bonemaw Tooth.
Splitnir Crafting Recipes
Do not upgrade your base Splitnir before applying a gemstone. When you convert the Splitnir into any of its three variants, it always resets to quality 1 regardless of the original weapon's upgrade level. All those Flametal and Bonemaw Teeth you spent on upgrades are wasted. Craft the base Splitnir, apply your chosen gemstone immediately, and then start upgrading the enchanted version.

Gemstone Variants: Which Enchantment Should You Pick?
At a level 4 Black Forge, Splitnir can become one of three gemstone variants, each costing the spear, 6 Flametal and one gem. Riktig Fulings drop 2 to 3 of each gemstone, and they also turn up in Charred Fortress chests. This is the biggest decision you will make with Splitnir.
Splitnir the Storming (Iolite)
The top recommendation for most players. It adds 10 Lightning to every hit and a 25% chance to trigger Chain Lightning, which arcs to nearby enemies. Many Charred enemies resist Pierce, but Lightning is a separate damage type, and the arcs help with groups, the spear's usual weakness.
Why Storming works on Morgen
Morgen resist Blunt, Slash and Pierce, but they are weak to Lightning. Fast thrusts mean frequent Chain Lightning procs. It is also strong against
Fallen Valkyries and Asksvins, and the throw becomes a ranged opener that can chain before you close in.

Splitnir the Primal (Jade)
Adds 10 Poison to thrusts and 15 to throws, plus a 20% chance to immobilize. Rooting is powerful crowd control: pin a dangerous enemy, back off, throw, then close in while it is still stuck. The Primal variant suits
Klossen or
Berserkir Axes users who swap in for backstabs on rooted targets.
Splitnir the Bleeding (Bloodstone)
The most niche variant. It adds 0.2% damage per point of missing health (raw HP, not percent). At 250 max HP and 100 current HP you are missing 150 points, for a 30% bonus.
Staying at low health in the Ashlands is usually a death wish, though. The Bleeding variant suits veterans on high-HP food who know enemy patterns well enough to survive a chunked health bar. For most players, Storming or Primal is safer.
Gemstone Variant Recipes
“The Splitnir the Storming is the second-best melee option behind the Thundering Berserkir Axes against Morgen, thanks to its fast attacks and Chain Lightning procs. Most players sleep on it because they assume Pierce is useless in the Ashlands.

Combat Techniques and Strategy
Splitnir's strength is versatility: a fast thrust and a strong ranged throw in one weapon.
Throw first
Open with a throw for 1.5x damage, or the full 3x backstab bonus if you hit from behind. The spear lands near the target and you must run to pick it up, which the 1.04-second attack time includes. That recovery window is your biggest risk, so throw from a safe distance and have an escape plan.
Thrust, then parry
The fast thrust matters in the Ashlands, where attack windows against Charred Warriors and Fallen Valkyries are short. Land two or three thrusts, then dodge or parry. It is one-handed, so a shield works, but many spear users go shield-free and weave in the 2x parry instead.
The backstab throw
Sneak behind a target and throw into its back. At quality 3 that is 220.5 Pierce times 3, up to 661.5 damage before armor. Few Ashlands enemies shrug that off.
The Splitnir the Storming is actually one of your best melee options against Morgen. While Morgen resist all physical damage types, the spear's fast attack speed means you are proccing Chain Lightning more often than slower weapons. Those Lightning procs bypass physical resistance entirely. Pair it with the
Thundering Berserkir Axes and you have the two best melee tools for dealing with Valheim's toughest regular enemies.
How Splitnir Compares to Other Ashlands Weapons
The competition is stiff. The Thundering Berserkir Axes are the community favorite for DPS and Lightning, Klossen offers knockback and crowd control, and the
Storm Star pairs mace-style knockback with Lightning.
Its niche
Splitnir is a melee-ranged hybrid with the fastest attack among Ashlands weapons. Nothing else opens with a 200-plus damage throw and slides straight into fast melee. Its movement penalty is also light compared to the 15% on sledgehammers and battleaxes.
Does Pierce hold up?
It depends on the target. Charred Warriors and Charred Twitchers resist Pierce, while Asksvins, Fallen Valkyries and Bonemaws take normal damage. Storming's Lightning largely solves this, so treat it as close to mandatory for general use.
Best as a secondary
Many veterans carry Klossen or Berserkir Axes for crowds and keep Splitnir for ranged pulls and fast single-target finishing. In that role it fills a gap no other Ashlands weapon covers.
Splitnir: Pros and Cons
Pros
- Fastest attack speed among Ashlands melee weapons (0.68s)
- Ranged throw at 1.5x damage for initiation and backstabs
- One-handed, pairs with any shield for defensive play
- Only -5% movement speed, very mobile in combat
- 3x backstab multiplier rewards positioning
- Strong parry with 2x bonus, usable without a shield
- Lightweight at 1.5 weight, barely impacts carry capacity
Cons
- Pure Pierce damage, resisted by several Ashlands enemies
- Throw recovery window leaves you vulnerable
- No innate knockback or crowd control on primary attacks
- Single-target focused, weak against groups without Storming enchantment
- Requires Bonemaw Teeth, which can be tedious to farm
Spear Progression: From Flint to Bloodgold
If you have used spears all game, you came through the
Flint,
Bronze,
Ancient Bark, Fang and
Carapace Spears. Splitnir is a solid step but not a giant leap: a fully upgraded Carapace Spear reaches 133 Pierce, just under Splitnir's quality 1 value, and Splitnir climbs to 153 at quality 4.
What really changes
The gemstone system gives spears elemental options for the first time. The Carapace Spear is pure Pierce with no effects, while Splitnir's variants add Lightning, Poison or health-scaled damage against enemies that shrug off a pointy stick.
What comes next
Splitnir is no longer the end of the line. The Deep North adds the Nord Spear, forged from
Bloodgold and
Timberwood, plus its Thunderblood and Frostfire variants, all with far more Pierce.

Spear Progression Path
Final Verdict: Is Splitnir Worth Crafting?
Yes, with caveats. For a spear main, Splitnir is the Ashlands reward and it delivers. The Storming variant holds its own against more popular picks, the throw gives tactical options no other melee weapon has, and the fast thrust keeps you competitive. Once you reach the Deep North, plan to move on to the Nord Spear.
If you are new to spears
The Thundering Berserkir Axes or Storm Star are easier first Ashlands weapons: they handle groups better and avoid the Pierce problem. But if you want to open from range, finish with fast thrusts and parry without a shield, craft Splitnir the Storming and learn the throw-and-thrust rhythm.
