Key takeaways
  • Half its attacks are feints: if your parry does not connect, release block and raise it again for the real hit.
  • Bring Spirit and Frost: the Mistwalker or Frostner before the Ashlands, Lightning variants like the Storm Star after.
  • Avoid Pierce (0.5x) and Fire (0.25x); it is immune to Poison.
  • Never dodge-roll into a feint unless you can roll fully out of its 3-meter reach.
  • After you defeat Fader, Charred Warriors can spawn at night in every biome, so fortify your old bases first.

What Makes Charred Warriors So Dangerous

The Charred Warrior is arguably the most punishing melee enemy in Valheim, and not because of raw damage. It is the feint system: unlike any other creature, Charred Warriors fake attacks, pausing mid-swing before the real hit. That turns a simple fight into a duel that rewards patience and punishes panic.

Who they fight with

They belong to the Demons faction and patrol the inner Ashlands with greatswords, stalking you until they are in striking range. They rarely come alone. A typical fight has:

Learning to finish the Warrior quickly is essential to surviving the Ashlands.

Understanding the Feint Attack System

The Charred Warrior has four attacks, and two of them are feints built to bait early parries and dodge rolls.

The honest attacks

  • Swing: a vertical slash in a 3-meter, 115-degree arc.
  • Thrust: a forward stab in a narrow 10-degree line out to 3 meters.

Both have a 3-second cooldown and trigger when you are within 1.6 meters. They are easy to parry once you learn the timing.

The feints

The Feint uses the same windup as the Swing, pauses, then slashes in a tighter 77.3-degree arc about 0.57 seconds later than a real Swing. The Thrust Feint copies the Thrust windup, pauses, then swings upward in a 60-degree arc about 0.63 seconds late. Both catch rolling players unless you roll fully out of the 3-meter range.

The double-tap parry

Veterans beat feints with a double-tap parry. Parry at the normal timing. If no parry animation plays, it was a feint: release block immediately and raise it again to catch the real hit. It feels awkward at first but becomes second nature. If you spot the feint early, a backward roll out of range also works.

“

Half of the Charred Warrior's attacks are feints. It feels less like fighting a mob and more like an actual duel. Iron Gate designed these to punish autopilot.

Veteran Tip

If parrying feels too risky, the Himminafl's spin attack is an excellent alternative. The secondary attack pushes Charred Warriors out of range even when it does not stagger them, so their follow-up swing whiffs. It works even against 2-star variants. High-knockback clubs like the Frostner have a similar effect.

Resistances and Best Weapons

Charred Warriors take 1.5x Spirit damage and normal Blunt, Slash, Frost and Lightning damage. They resist Pierce (0.5x), strongly resist Fire (0.25x) and are immune to Poison. Leave Atgeirs, spears and plain arrows at home, and do not count on fire.

Before the Ashlands gear

  • Mistwalker: Slash and Frost, and every upgrade adds Spirit damage that hits their only weakness.
  • Frostner: Blunt, Frost and Spirit in one weapon, with heavy knockback. Warriors are not weak to Frost, but the slow gives you time to read feints when you are swarmed.
  • Staff of Frost: the caster's pick for the same slow. Pair it with the Staff of Protection and you can kite Warriors all day.

The Staff of Embers still works because it also deals Blunt damage, but it should not be your main weapon.

Ashlands weapons

Once you can craft Ashlands gear, the Iolite Lightning variants stand out, since nothing in the Ashlands resists Lightning and the chain Lightning proc punishes groups. The Thundering Berserkir Axes attack fast, so they trigger it more often. The Storm Star mace adds big knockback for crowd control.

How to Fight Charred Warriors: Step-by-Step

  1. 1

    Gear Up Properly

Equip a Spirit weapon like the Mistwalker or Frostner and a buckler for the best parry bonus. Eat your best food to maximize health. A 2-star Charred Warrior's thrust hits for up to 320 Pierce, enough to one-shot a player at 170 HP even in fully upgraded Carapace armor. The Bonemass Forsaken Power is highly recommended for dangerous encounters.

  2. 2

    Isolate the Warrior

Charred Warriors rarely spawn alone. Clear Twitchers and Marksmen first, or use terrain to separate the Warrior from the pack. Large flat rocks in the Ashlands force enemies to path single-file along the edges, letting you fight one at a time. Dvergr huts can also provide cover, and the Dvergr will fight alongside you as long as you do not hit them.

  3. 3

    Read the Attack Animation

Watch the Warrior's windup. Raise your shield to parry at the natural timing. If nothing connects after about half a second, the attack was a feint. Quickly release block and raise it again to catch the real strike. The Feint has an 8-second cooldown, so once a Warrior uses one, you have a safe window for straightforward parries.

  4. 4

    Counterattack After the Parry

A successful parry staggers the Warrior, opening them up for a full counterattack. Use terrain to your advantage: fight with the enemy uphill from you so the parry knockback does not push them too far away to hit. Downhill enemies get knocked further because they lose ground contact. The stagger limit is 50% of their max HP, meaning you need to deal 300 damage in a short window to stagger a base Warrior outside of a parry.

  5. 5

Use Frost to Control the Pace

Frost Arrows, the Frostner, or the Staff of Frost all apply a slowing debuff that makes the Warrior's attacks easier to read. When facing multiple enemies at once, the slow effect is worth more than raw damage. It turns a chaotic brawl into a manageable fight.

Common Mistake

Do not dodge-roll against feints. Both the regular Feint and the Thrust Feint are specifically designed to catch rolling players unless you roll completely out of the 3-meter attack range. If you are too close, the delayed second hit will connect during your roll recovery frames. Either parry with the double-tap method or back away entirely.

Where to Find Charred Warriors

Charred Warriors spawn across the inner Ashlands, away from the coast.

  • Day: common, but limited to 2 per area. They can have any star level.
  • Night: no spawn limit and even more common, but night spawns despawn at dawn.

If you want a permanent starred Warrior, for combat training or transport, get one from a spawner structure, not a night spawn.

Elite Monuments

A rare Monument of Torment (Elite) appears at Mysterious Locations tied to the Dyrnwyn quest line. It spawns only 2-star Charred, which makes it extremely dangerous but the only reliable source of permanent 2-star Warriors.

After Fader

Once you defeat Fader, Charred Warriors can spawn at night in any biome, from the Meadows to the Plains. They are capped at 3 per area and never have stars, but they are a nasty surprise at an early base. This is intentional: each boss kill escalates night danger worldwide.

Drops and What Charred Bone Is Used For

Charred Warriors drop Charred Bone, with more per kill at higher star levels, and have a 5% chance at a Warrior Trophy at every star level. Charred Bone is one of the key Ashlands materials, so plan to farm Warriors a lot.

Charred Bone uses

Shield fuel and transport

Charred Bone also fuels the Shield Generator, like Bone Fragments, so farming it keeps your base defenses running too. Each piece weighs 0.5, stacks to 50 and is teleportable, so getting it home is never a problem.

Meta Strategy

For efficient Charred Bone farming, set up near a Charred Fortress with its two Effigies of Malice intact. Climb the fortress walls using a wooden ladder (no Battering Ram needed) and rain down ranged attacks from above. The Effigies spawn Warriors every 12 seconds with better star odds than open-world Monuments. Once you have cleared the fortress, leave the Effigies standing and use the indestructible walls as protection while you farm.

Charred Warriors in Raids and Events

Before you defeat Fader, two raids can bring Charred Warriors to your base:

  • "The undead army marches": a full assault with Charred Warriors, Marksmen and Twitchers. Warriors are capped at 3 at a time but spawn very often. It can hit a base in any biome and is one of the most dangerous raids in the game.
  • "The dead have been summoned": spawns 3 Monuments of Torment near your base. They respawn 20 seconds after being destroyed during the event and do not despawn when it ends.

Leftover Monuments keep producing Charred enemies long after the raid. If Ashlands enemies keep appearing near your base, search the area and destroy them.

Post-Fader World Escalation

After defeating Fader, Charred Warriors can spawn at night in the Meadows, Black Forest, Swamp, Mountains and Plains. They are limited to 3 per area with no stars, but a 600 HP enemy with feint attacks at your starter base is no joke. Fortify every base before you fight Fader, because there is no going back.
