- What Comes After the Nidhögg in 1.0
Named after the dragon that gnaws at the roots of Yggdrasil, the
Nidhögg is the Ashlands one-handed sword and the king of the Ashlands sword meta. If you ran the
Mistwalker through the Mistlands and wonder what comes next, this is it. The real power comes from socketing a gemstone, which turns it into one of three variants.
The gemstone choice matters far more than the base sword. Two of the three options are situational at best, and one is so dominant that picking anything else in the Ashlands handicaps you.
- Craft the base Nidhögg, then socket
Iolite right away for
Nidhögg the Thundering, the best variant. - Applying a gemstone resets quality to 1, so never upgrade the base sword first.
- The cheapest strong path costs 3
Charred Bone, 24
Flametal, 2
Asksvin Hide and 2 Iolite. - Chain Lightning can hit neutral Dvergr and turn them hostile.
- In 1.0 the Deep North
Nord Sword and
Thunderblood Sword hit harder, so the Nidhögg is no longer the final sword.
How to Craft the Base Nidhögg
You need a level 3
Black Forge: the forge itself (10
Black Marble, 10
Yggdrasil Wood, 5
Black Cores) plus the
Black Forge Cooler and the
Vice.
Materials
Everything comes from the Ashlands:
- Flametal: smelt
Flametal Ore at a
Blast Furnace with
Coal. Flametal cannot go through regular portals, so smelt near your Ashlands base or use a Stone Portal. - Asksvin Hide: dropped by
Asksvin and Asksvin Hatchlings, the aggressive horse-like creatures that roam in small groups. Bring solid armor. - Charred Bone: dropped by the various Charred enemies.
Upgrade costs
Upgrades need escalating Flametal and Asksvin Hide. A base sword taken all the way to quality 4 costs 3 Charred Bone, 72 Flametal and 14 Asksvin Hide in total, but see the tip below before you spend anything.
Base Nidhögg Crafting Recipes
When you apply a gemstone to the Nidhögg to create a variant, the upgrade level resets to quality 1. Do not waste materials upgrading the base sword to quality 3 or 4 before socketing your gemstone. Craft the base Nidhögg, immediately apply your chosen gemstone, then upgrade the variant. This saves you a massive amount of Flametal and Asksvin Hide.
Combat Mechanics and Attack Patterns
The Nidhögg uses the standard one-handed sword moveset, one of the most versatile in the game.
Primary combo
A 3-hit combo lasting 2.46 seconds (0.86s, 0.70s and 0.90s swings). The final hit deals double damage with 20% more knockback, so always finish the combo. There is no damage penalty against multiple targets, which makes it excellent against groups.
Secondary thrust
The thrust deals 3x damage with slightly longer reach (2.7 against 2.4). It is your single-target burst tool, and the 3x backstab multiplier stacks on top: a quality 1 secondary backstab deals 1,215 Slash before skill bonuses.
Parrying without a shield
With a 2x parry bonus, the sword can parry in a pinch. A
Flametal Shield is better, but a quick dodge, parry and counter without the shield is one of the sword class's hidden strengths.

The Three Gemstone Variants
Like the other Ashlands weapons, the Nidhögg can be socketed at a level 4 Black Forge with one of three gemstones. Every variant keeps the same Slash damage, attacks and cost structure: 1 Nidhögg, 6 Flametal and 1 gemstone to create it, then 6 Flametal and 1 gemstone for quality 2. Only the bonus damage and on-hit effect differ:
- Iolite: Nidhögg the Thundering (Lightning, Chain Lightning)
Jade:
Nidhögg the Primal (Poison, Immobilize)
Bloodstone:
Nidhögg the Bleeding (bonus damage at low health)

Nidhögg the Thundering (Iolite): The Clear Winner
This is the variant to craft. It adds 10 Lightning to every attack and has a 25% chance on normal attacks (20% on the secondary) to trigger Chain Lightning.
How Chain Lightning works
- Deals 75 Lightning damage that cannot be blocked or dodged and ignores weapon skill.
- Has an 80% chance to bounce to another enemy within 8 meters, with a falling chance for each further bounce (80%, 60%, 45% and so on).
- Never hits the same target twice in one chain.
Against groups, one swing can easily add 150 to 300 bonus damage.
Why it dominates
At quality 2 each primary swing deals 151 (141 Slash plus 10 Lightning), and roughly every fourth hit adds 75 or more unblockable damage. In testing, three full combos (first hit critical) totaled about 2,151 damage against 1,804 for the Bleeding variant at full health, a 19% gain before any bounces. Very few enemies resist Lightning, and
Morgens are weak to it.

Black Forge (level 4): 1 Nidhögg, 6 Flametal, 1 Iolite
“The Thundering variant is not just the best Nidhögg. It is the best one-handed sword in the Ashlands, and nothing there comes close once the Chain Lightning starts bouncing.
Nidhögg the Primal (Jade): Crowd Control Niche
The Primal variant adds 10 Poison per hit and has a 20% chance to Immobilize, rooting enemies in place. The poison is weak in the Ashlands: Charred Warriors,
Fallen Valkyries and
Voltures are immune and Asksvin resist it.
The root can lock down a dangerous
Charred Warrior while you reposition, but a 20% proc is unreliable next to Thundering's 25% Chain Lightning. If you value control over damage and often feel overwhelmed, Primal has a niche. For most players, Thundering's damage and area clear keep you safer.
Nidhögg the Bleeding (Bloodstone): The Underperformer
The Bleeding variant raises your damage by 0.2% per missing point of health. You need to be missing roughly 50 health just to match Thundering, and Ashlands food heals you back up constantly, which cancels the bonus.
Even at 50 missing health, a standard combo rotation reaches about 1,949 damage, still around 200 behind Thundering at full health. It adds no elemental damage, crowd control or area damage. Save your Bloodstones for something else.
Variant Effects (Quality 2)
| Stat | Thundering (Iolite) | Primal (Jade) | Bleeding (Bloodstone) |

| AoE Potential | Excellent (bounces) | None | None |
| Ashlands Effectiveness | Top tier | Reduced (poison resistance) | Weak (healing cancels it) |
Gemstone Variant Recipes (Quality 1)
Chain Lightning from the Thundering variant can accidentally damage neutral Ashlands Dvergr, immediately turning them hostile. Be very careful when fighting near Dvergr settlements. One stray lightning bounce can start a fight you did not want. Lure enemies away from Dvergr before engaging if you want to keep trading relationships intact.
Nidhögg vs Dyrnwyn
Dyrnwyn is the other Ashlands one-handed sword, a legendary flaming blade forged from three fragments. Lord Reto, the Ashlands miniboss, drops the
Dyrnwyn Hilt Fragment; the blade and tip fragments are found separately.
It has 10 more Slash than the Nidhögg plus 10 Fire (2 per tick over 5 seconds), but it cannot take a gemstone. No Chain Lightning, Immobilize or Bleeding. The extra Slash and small burn cannot compete with Thundering's procs.
Where Dyrnwyn fits
It is a trophy weapon and a nod to early backers. It looks incredible and is strong in older biomes (4 hits per
Seeker against the Mistwalker's 5). In the Ashlands, where many enemies resist or ignore Fire, the Thundering Nidhögg outclasses it.
Recommended Loadout
The Nidhögg leaves your off-hand free, and the Flametal Shield is the natural pairing for strong blocks and parries. Many veterans also carry a Mistwalker for its Frost slow, which the Thundering variant lacks.
- Single big enemy: parry with the shield and counter.
- Swarmed by a pack: keep swinging and let Chain Lightning thin the herd.
Recommended Ashlands Sword Loadout
Upgrade Priority and Forge Limits
The Black Forge's four extensions (Black Forge Cooler, Vice,
Metal Cutter and
Gem Cutter) take it to level 5. Upgrades need one forge level per quality step, so at level 5 the base sword reaches quality 3 and gemstone variants reach quality 2. The quality 4 recipes need a higher forge level than these extensions provide.
There is no reason to push the base sword to quality 3: Thundering at quality 2 already beats it.
Cheapest strong path
- Craft the base Nidhögg at forge level 3: 3 Charred Bone, 12 Flametal, 2 Asksvin Hide.
- Socket Iolite at level 4: 6 Flametal, 1 Iolite.
- Upgrade Thundering to quality 2 at level 5: 6 Flametal, 1 Iolite.
Grand total: 3 Charred Bone, 24 Flametal, 2 Asksvin Hide and 2 Iolite.

What Comes After the Nidhögg in 1.0
The Deep North adds two stronger one-handed swords at the Black Forge:
- Nord Sword: more Slash than the Nidhögg, made from
Bloodgold,
Timberwood and a
Mould: Nord Sword. - Thunderblood Sword: upgraded from the Nord Sword with Bloodgold and
Thunderblood Essence, adding built-in Lightning damage.
The Thundering Nidhögg remains the best sword for the Ashlands itself, but plan to replace it once you reach the Deep North.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I switch between gemstone variants without losing my Nidhögg?
Yes, you can apply a different gemstone to an already-enchanted Nidhögg at the Black Forge. However, the upgrade level resets to quality 1 every time you change the gemstone. You also lose the previous gemstone. So switching variants costs you a new gemstone plus all the upgrade materials again.
Is the Nidhögg better than the Slayer (two-handed sword)?
They serve different roles. The
Slayer is a two-handed sword with higher raw damage per hit but no shield slot. The Nidhögg paired with a Flametal Shield gives you better survivability, parry options, and versatility. For pure DPS in safe situations, the Slayer wins. For general Ashlands combat where you need to block, parry, and manage groups, the Nidhögg plus shield is usually the safer and more consistent choice.
Does the Chain Lightning damage scale with sword skill?
No. Chain Lightning always deals a flat 75 Lightning damage regardless of sword skill, and enemies cannot block or dodge it. That makes it strong from the moment you craft the weapon.
Should I upgrade my existing Mistlands gear to level 4 before crafting the Nidhögg?
Yes. A quality 4 Mistwalker or
Carapace weapon will serve you well in early Ashlands exploration while you gather materials. Do not rush into crafting level 1 Ashlands weapons when your Mistlands gear can be maxed out first. The Nidhögg at quality 1 (135 slash) is not dramatically stronger than a maxed Mistlands weapon, so take your time farming materials.
Is the Nidhögg still the best one-handed sword in Valheim 1.0?
Not anymore. The Deep North adds the Nord Sword (170 Slash at quality 1) and the Thunderblood Sword (180 Slash plus 45 Lightning), both crafted at the Black Forge. The Thundering Nidhögg is still the top choice for the Ashlands.
