What Is the Fenring and Why Should You Care?
The Fenring is Valheim's werewolf: upright on two legs, jet-black fur, glowing red eyes, and it stalks the Mountains only at night. If you have mined Silver after dark, you have probably met one the hard way. Its name comes from Fenrir, the wolf destined to swallow Odin at Ragnarok.
Nuisance or threat?
It hits hard enough to kill unprepared players, yet veterans often treat it as a nuisance rather than a real threat. Its drops look modest for the danger, and the community has long debated whether it deserves better loot. Both drops still have real crafting value most players overlook.
Not to be confused with the Ulv
Unlike its four-legged cousin the
Ulv, which lurks in Frost Caves, the Fenring roams the open Mountain surface. It despawns at dawn, so surviving until sunrise solves the problem. That is easier said than done when it pounces on you mid-Silver-vein.

Where and When Fenrings Spawn
Fenrings follow strict rules that make them predictable:
- Where: only the middle spawn zone of Mountain biomes, so edges and the highest peaks are usually clear.
- When: night only. At dawn they simply vanish, with no gradual retreat.
- How many: at most 2 per area, and they are uncommon, far rarer than Wolves or
Drakes.
Avoid them or hunt them
To avoid Fenrings, explore and mine during the day. To farm them, roam the Mountains at night and accept the Wolves, Drakes and cold that come with it. Veterans warn that the wolf packs are the real danger: a 2-star
Wolf pack is more lethal than any Fenring.
When mining Silver at night, dig a deep, steep pit by pickaxing the same spot 10+ times, then mine from inside the hole. Fenrings and Wolves cannot reach you down there. Just watch out for Drakes, as they can still hit you with frost breath from above.
How to Fight a Fenring: Combat Strategy
- 1
Watch for the howl
Fenrings howl before engaging. Stop what you are doing and equip your weapon and shield. If the pounce lands while you are mid-swing with a Pickaxe, you take the full hit with no chance to block.
- 2
Stay close to disable the jump attack
The jump attack only works from 5 to 9 meters away. Stay inside 5 meters and it is disabled, leaving only the claw swipe. Close the distance immediately and stay aggressive.
- 3
Parry the claw, then punish
The claw is well telegraphed: the swipe connects 0.65 seconds into a 1.37-second animation, and the bite 0.71 seconds into 1.53 seconds. Against a 0.25-second parry window, both are very parry-friendly. A
Silver Shield parry staggers the Fenring for free hits, and two or three cycles with Silver weapons end the fight. - 4
Use Fire damage when possible
Fenrings take 1.5x Fire damage, so open with a couple of Fire Arrows if you spot one early, then switch to melee. Every other damage type except Poison does normal damage, so any Silver-tier weapon works.
“Watch for him in moonlight, Haunter of the night. Soft of foot, Sharp of tooth, Slow to stalk, Quick to bite.
Fenring Drops: What You Get and What to Do With It
The drop table is small but more useful than its reputation suggests:
- Wolf Fang: 1 on every kill, guaranteed.
- Fenring Trophy: 10% chance.
Wolf Fang
Wolves and Ulvs drop Wolf Fang too, but only some of the time. It goes into three Mountain-tier crafts:
Fang Spear, one of the best Mountain spears (16 Wolf Fang to reach quality 4)
Wolf Hide Trousers- Wolf Sight trinket
Because the Fenring always drops at least one, it is a reliable Fang source.
Fenring Trophy
The trophy has two crafting uses:
- Cold Fishing Bait: 20
Fishing Bait plus 1 trophy at a
Food Preparation Table makes 20 bait, which catches
Pike in the Meadows and Black Forest and
Tetra in Frost Caves. - Wolf Sight: a Mountain-tier trinket that gives +20 Bows, +20 Spears and +10% Pierce damage for 30 seconds once you build 55 Adrenaline. For bow and spear builds it is extremely strong.
It can also go on an Item Stand or program a Ballista to target Fenrings. Wolf Sight is the main reason to hunt Fenrings on purpose.

Forge: 5 Silver, 5 Wolf Fang, 1 Fenring Trophy
Many players link Fenrings to the Fenris armor set and expect Fenris Hair or Fenris Claw drops. They never drop them. Fenris Hair is gathered inside Frost Caves, along with the Fenris Claw. The Fenring drops Wolf Fang and its trophy, nothing more, so don't farm it for Fenris materials.
Fenring vs Ulv: Understanding the Lycanthropes
Fenrings and Ulvs are both lycanthropes (werewolves) in Valheim's lore, which is why neither can be tamed. Regular Wolves are animals you can tame with meat, but Fenrings cannot be tamed, period.
The key differences
- Fenring: walks upright and roams the Mountain surface at night.
- Ulv: four-legged and found only inside Frost Caves, where tight corridors make it more dangerous. It drops Wolf Fang some of the time, plus the
Ulv Trophy.
Best Wolf Fang source
Regular Wolves spawn often and die fast, but only drop a Wolf Fang 40% of the time. Fenrings always drop 1, which makes them a dependable source during night trips.
Recommended Gear for Fenring Encounters
You usually meet Fenrings while hunting Silver, so you should already be geared for the Mountains. Iron Armor is the minimum for comfortable fights. Wolf armor is ideal: its Frost resistance replaces
Frost Resistance Mead.
Weapons and shields
Frostner: Blunt, Frost and Spirit damage take a Fenring down in a few hits.- Fire Arrows from a
Huntsman Bow or
Draugr Fang: open with these to exploit the Fire weakness. - Silver Shield or
Iron Buckler: enough block and parry power for its claws.
Staggering takes 150 damage (half its health) in a short window, which a parry plus a Silver-tier follow-up achieves easily.
Recommended Loadout for Fenring Hunting
Is Farming Fenrings Worth Your Time?
It depends on what you need. For a Fang Spear or the Wolf Sight trinket, hunting Fenrings at night is a perfectly valid farm, and the guaranteed Wolf Fang makes them more reliable than Wolves.
When to skip it
For general Mountain loot, Fenrings are a poor use of time. At a 10% trophy rate you need about 10 kills per trophy, and only 2 can spawn per area each night. Clearing Frost Caves or mining Silver pays better.
The Wolf Sight exception
Wolf Sight gave Fenrings a real purpose. If you run a bow or spear build, it alone justifies hunting a few for the trophy. Don't expect a thrilling farm: they die quickly to Mountain-tier gear, and the night window limits each session.
Fenring FAQ
Can Fenrings be tamed?
Do Fenrings drop Fenris Hair or Fenris Claws?
No. Despite the similar names, Fenris Hair and Fenris Claw come from Frost Caves. Fenrings drop 1 Wolf Fang (guaranteed) and their trophy (10% chance).
Do Fenrings have star variants?
No. Fenrings only spawn as 0-star creatures. Unlike Wolves, which can appear as 1-star or 2-star variants, Fenrings always have 300 HP and the same damage values regardless of world progression or distance from the center.
