- Wolves live only in the Mountain biome; 1-star and 2-star Wolves spawn only at night and despawn at dawn unless taming has started.
- Their bites deal Slash damage, so Root Armor's Pierce resistance does nothing against them.
- Tame a 2-star pair: two 2-star parents always breed 2-star pups.
- Wolves cannot use portals. Leave a backup breeding pair on the Mountain before moving any home.
- A full base-quality Wolf Armor set needs 18
Wolf Pelt; maxing every piece takes 66.
Why Wolves Matter So Much
Found only in the Mountain biome, Wolves will tear through an unprepared Viking in seconds. Yet they are arguably the most valuable creature you can tame. A pack of 2-star Wolves shreds almost any enemy, defends your base, and their drops craft some of the best mid-game armor.
As an enemy, the Wolf is one of the first truly dangerous creatures in the frozen peaks. As an ally, a tamed pack can carry you through the Plains and even help with bosses. This guide covers both sides: hunting Wolves for pelts and building an army of 2-star good boys.

Where to Find Wolves and How They Spawn
Wolves spawn only in the Mountain biome, and their spawn rules decide whether you will ever find the prized 2-star variant.
- Daytime: only 0-star Wolves, in packs of up to 3. You will meet them on almost any Mountain trip.
- Nighttime: spawns rise sharply, with packs of up to 6. This is the only time 1-star and 2-star Wolves spawn naturally.
- Dawn: night Wolves despawn at sunrise unless taming has started. Night lasts only about 9 minutes, so the window is narrow.
The "You are being hunted" raid
After you defeat Bonemass, this raid sends waves of Wolves at your base. Unlike most raids, it can trigger even when you are away from structures. Raid Wolves are never starred, so treat them as free
Wolf Meat and Wolf Pelt, not taming candidates.
Rolling for a 2-star
The 2-star spawn rate is roughly 1%, so patience is essential. Each night you find only 0-star Wolves, kill them all. This forces fresh spawns the next night and another chance at a starred roll.
Do not waste your time with 0-star Wolves for taming. They have only 80 HP and will die to almost anything in the Plains or Mountains. The entire point of taming Wolves is to get a 2-star breeding pair. A single 2-star Wolf deals 140 Slash damage and has 240 HP, making it a genuine combat powerhouse. Hunt exclusively at night, kill every 0-star Wolf you see to force new spawns, and do not give up. The 2-star good boy is worth every frustrating night on the mountain.
How to Fight Wild Wolves
Wolves deal Slash damage, not Pierce, which surprises players who expect a bite to pierce. Root Armor's Pierce resistance does nothing here, and Wolves will chew right through it.
Reading the attack chain
Each Wolf has three bites: a left swing, a right swing and a lunge. Every variant has its own 5-second cooldown, so in practice a Wolf attacks three times in quick succession, then briefly backs off.
Wait for the lunge, dodge to the side and counterattack, or time a parry. A mace works especially well because the stagger interrupts the chain.
Frostner and the
Porcupine are both excellent choices.
Survival tips for night hunts
- Keep the high ground. Hit detection on slopes is inconsistent, and your swings can whiff if you stand below the Wolf.
- Walk, don't sprint. Save stamina so you can fight or flee when a pack ambushes you.
- Eat two health foods and one stamina food. It is safer than a stamina-heavy loadout.
- Watch for
Fenrings. These werewolf-like creatures also roam the Mountains at night, hit much harder than Wolves and look similar at a distance.
How to Tame a Wolf (Step by Step)
- 1
Prepare Your Supplies
Bring several stacks of
Wood, a Pickaxe and raw meat (
Boar Meat,
Deer Meat,
Neck Tail,
Lox Meat,
Raw Fish or
Sausages all work identically). Pack
Frost Resistance Mead or a
Wolf Fur Cape for the cold, plus portal materials for quick return trips. Wear at least
Bronze-tier armor to survive Mountain encounters. - 2
Set Up a Mountain Base and Dig Wolf Traps
Find a flat area with good Wolf spawns, ideally away from
Stone Golems and
Drakes. Build a small elevated shelter, then dig 2-3 pits with your Pickaxe, about double player height, with steep, smooth sides so Wolves cannot climb out. A pen with reinforced walls also works, but agitated Wolves will attack structures. - 3
Hunt for Your 2-Star Wolf at Night
Wait for nightfall and patrol the Mountain, killing every 0-star Wolf to force new spawns. Use Eikthyr's power to move faster while stamina lasts. When you spot a 2-star Wolf (visibly larger), lure it to your trap: drag it in with the Abyssal Harpoon, or aggro it and kite it onto breakable floor pieces placed over a pit.
- 4
Start the Taming Process Before Dawn
Begin taming a starred Wolf before daybreak or it despawns. Drop raw meat into the pit and move 10-15 meters away until the Wolf loses its alert status (red exclamation mark). Yellow hearts mean taming has begun, and it will no longer despawn. It needs 3 pieces of meat (10 minutes each), 30 minutes in total. Stay within about 64 meters so the area stays loaded.
- 5
Tame a Second Wolf and Start Breeding
Capture a second Wolf of any star level for a breeding pair. Once both are tamed, keep them within 3 meters of each other and drop meat nearby. Two 2-star parents always produce 2-star pups; a 2-star with a 0-star is a 50/50 roll. Breed several pups on the Mountain before moving any, and always leave a backup pair behind.
“There are friends in Valheim but you must seek them amongst your enemies. Old friends, fire-kin, moon-singers. For centuries they have hunted alongside you, now you must remind them of the old covenant between your people and theirs. Flesh is their delight and must be your offering.
Breeding Mechanics and Building a Wolf Army
Breeding is straightforward once you know the rules:
- Two tamed Wolves within 3 meters of each other.
- Both fed and calm (not hungry, not alerted).
- No more than 4 Wolves within a 10-meter radius.
The game checks every 30 seconds, with a 33% chance of a love point per check. Three love points cause pregnancy, which lasts about 1 minute. Pups take 50 minutes to mature into adults.
Working around the population cap
The 4-Wolves-in-10-meters cap is the main bottleneck. Space breeding pairs at least 10 meters apart so they don't block each other, and move pups out of the breeding area. Command grown Wolves to follow you to a separate holding pen.
How stars are inherited
A pup inherits the stars of whichever parent becomes pregnant. With a 2-star and a 0-star, either can conceive, hence the 50/50 split. Breed two 2-star Wolves for guaranteed 2-star pups and an unlimited supply of the strongest variant.
Feeding
Wolves eat Boar Meat, Deer Meat, Lox Meat, Neck Tail, Raw Fish and Sausages. Every option works identically for taming and breeding, keeping a Wolf fed for 10 minutes, so use whatever you have most of. They will not eat Wolf Meat. Fed tamed Wolves also regenerate health, which helps after fights.
Never transport your only Wolves. Always leave a breeding pair safely enclosed at your Mountain base before moving any Wolves to your main settlement. Wolves cannot go through portals, so you will need to walk or boat them home.
Trolls with logs can one-shot even 2-star Wolves,
Serpents can kill them during sea voyages, and boat collision damage can instantly kill a Wolf regardless of health. The heartbreak of losing your only 2-star pair to a Troll swing is something every experienced player has lived through at least once.
Using Tamed Wolves Effectively
Command tamed Wolves to follow you or to stay put. Followers stay where they are when you log out or teleport, then resume following when you return, so they make reliable long-session companions.
Base defense
Station 2-star Wolves around your perimeter. They become alert when a hostile comes within 14 meters and attack anything within 2 meters or anything that attacks them. Where enemies drop meat, they feed and even breed on their own, building a self-sustaining defense. In the Meadows and Black Forest they dominate Greydwarves,
Skeletons and other common threats.
Boss fights
Breed a surplus of 12-20 Wolves and bring them along. A pack of 2-star Wolves can take down most bosses with little help from you. Wolves have infinite stamina, though, and will chase enemies across water, off cliffs and into dangerous biomes.
Where Wolves struggle
- Plains:
Deathsquitos whittle their health between fights,
Lox crush even starred Wolves, and
Fuling Berserkers kill them quickly. - Mistlands: the terrain wrecks pathfinding and
Seeker Soldiers far outclass them. Bringing Wolves here is a reliable way to lose them. - Mountains with a tame pack: tamed Wolves will not attack wild Wolves, so wild packs go for you while yours stand idle.
- Your own swings: friendly fire is on in vanilla. A wide Atgeir sweep through your pack is a recipe for disaster.
Wolf Drops and What They're Used For
Wolves drop four items, and every one is useful. Each star doubles the quantities, which makes 2-star Wolves the most efficient source by far.

Wolf Pelt
The most important drop. A base-quality Wolf Armor set (
Drake Helmet,
Wolf Hide Chestpiece,
Wolf Hide Trousers and Wolf Fur Cape) takes 18 pelts, and fully upgrading every piece to quality 4 takes 66. Wolf Pelt also goes into Fenris armor, the Dragon Bed, Wolf Rug and Stone Throne.
Wolf Fang
A 0-star Wolf has only a 40% chance to drop one, but a 2-star Wolf always drops 4. Fenrings are another reliable source, dropping a fang every kill. Fangs craft the Wolf Hide Trousers (4 at base quality, plus more per upgrade), the
Fang Spear and the
Wolf Sight trinket.
Wolf Meat and Wolf Trophy
Wolf Meat cooks into a solid health food on a
Cooking Station, or goes into
Wolf Jerky (balanced) and
Wolf Skewer (health) at a level 3
Cauldron. The
Wolf Trophy is a 10% drop at every star level and is needed for the Wolf Fur Cape.

Transporting Wolves and Managing Your Pack
Getting Wolves from the Mountain to your main base is one of vanilla Valheim's most frustrating logistics jobs. Wolves cannot go through portals, period, so you either walk them home or ship them by boat.
Walking them home
Command your Wolves to follow and plan a route that avoids the Plains and Swamp. They attack every hostile they meet, and one log-swinging Troll can end the trip instantly. Stick to Meadows and Black Forest paths and carry enough food for yourself and the pack.
Shipping by boat
- Build a dock with a flat plank extending directly over the boat deck. Wolves dislike stairs, so keep it level.
- Lure the Wolf onto the plank.
- Break the plank so the Wolf drops onto the boat.
- Sail slowly. Collisions with fish, rocks and other entities can kill a Wolf instantly, and Wolves will try to fight Serpents.
The easy way
The best option is to base on an island with its own Mountain and tame locally. Otherwise, breed a surplus first and move one pair at a time. Followers wait where they are when you portal away, so you can portal yourself while walking the pack home in stages.
Tamed Wolves: Strengths vs Weaknesses
Pros
- 2-star Wolves deal 140 Slash damage, shredding most enemies
- Excellent base defense, especially in Meadows and Black Forest
- Self-sustaining when roaming areas with meat-dropping enemies
- Can help solo bosses when brought in large packs
- Wolf drops are essential for Mountain-tier armor and food
- Breed indefinitely once you have a 2-star pair
Cons
- 0-star Wolves are too fragile to be practical allies
- Cannot go through portals, making transport painful
- Struggle in the Plains (
Deathsquitos,
Lox,
Fulings) - Essentially useless in the Mistlands
- Take instant-kill collision damage on boats
- Bats during raids can wipe out entire Wolf packs indoors
