- Bring Poison: a
Draugr Fang with
Poison Arrows, or
Ooze Bombs thrown through a doorway. Fire does nothing to them. - Find Cultists behind wooden doors in Frost Caves; they never respawn.
- When both arms come down for the Flames attack, rush in: it cannot be blocked, but it cannot hit you within 2 meters.
- Leave Root armor at home (every piece is weak to Fire) and drink
Fire Resistance Barley Wine if you have it. - The 10%
Cultist Trophy is required for the
Fenris Hood.
What Makes Cultists So Dangerous
Cultists are the most feared enemy in the Mountain biome. These hooded, wolf-like figures in tattered red cloaks lurk behind doors and curtains inside Frost Caves, and their fire attacks can melt your health bar in seconds in the cramped corridors where you fight them.
Strengths and weakness
Cultists are immune to Fire and cannot be damaged by chop or pickaxe attacks, so you cannot fight fire with fire. Their one weakness is Poison, and players who exploit it tear through Frost Caves while newer players get roasted.
Scarce by design
Cultists are rare one-time spawns inside Frost Caves and never respawn. That makes their 10% Cultist Trophy hard to farm, so plan on raiding several Frost Caves across different Mountains if you want the full Fenris set.

Understanding Cultist Attacks
Cultists have three attacks, and recognising which is coming decides the fight.
Fireclaw and Fireclaw Double
The Fireclaw is a quick horizontal swipe that applies Burning. With only a 2-second cooldown, a Cultist chains it relentlessly at close range. The Fireclaw Double swings both claws in succession, for up to 150 total damage if both connect, but its 10-second cooldown gives you a window to counterattack afterwards.
Flames
This is the attack that catches most players. The Cultist brings both arms down and blasts a 35-degree cone of fire that applies Burning. It hits through walls and cannot be blocked, so no shield will save you.
Your only defenses are dodging sideways or closing the gap: Flames cannot be used when you stand within 2 meters. Veterans rush in at the wind-up, forcing the Cultist into its more predictable melee attacks.
Cultist Attack Breakdown
| Stat | Fireclaw | Fireclaw Double | Flames |
|---|---|---|---|
| Damage | 35 Slash + 40 Fire | 35 Slash + 40 Fire (x2 hits) | 50 Fire |
| Cooldown | 2 seconds | 10 seconds | 10 seconds |
| Range | 1.5 meters | 1.5 meters | 2-6 meters |
| Blockable | Yes | Yes | No (hits through walls) |
| Status Effect | Burning | Burning | Burning |
The Cultist's Flames attack has a dead zone within 2 meters. If you see the wind-up animation where both arms come down, sprint toward the Cultist rather than away. Getting in close forces it to switch to melee attacks, which are blockable and parryable. Running away from the Flames blast is how most players die in Frost Caves.
How to Defeat Cultists: Best Strategies
Poison first
Poison changes the whole fight. A sneak attack with Poison Arrows from a Draugr Fang can nearly one-shot a Cultist on normal difficulty. Ooze Bombs are the overlooked pick: toss one through a doorway, close the door and let the cloud work. It is arguably the safest way to clear a Frost Cave solo.
Silver weapons
Cultists take full Spirit damage, so the
Silver Sword is the next best option; at quality 2 it kills one in roughly two to four hits depending on skill. The Frostner's Spirit damage adds up quickly too.
Stealth
Cultists sit behind wooden doors, so you always know where they are. Crouch, open doors slowly, peek through cracks in ice walls and line up sneak attacks.
Flesh Rippers have a 6x backstab multiplier, and a sneak shot with Poison Arrows works just as well.
Melee tactics
- Punish Flames: the Cultist stands still during the narrow fire cone. Roll to the side and take free hits.
- Atgeirs: the reach lets you poke from a safer distance, and the secondary spin attack staggers Cultists reliably.
Iron Sledge: its area knockback keeps Cultists at bay in tight corridors.

Step-by-Step Frost Cave Cultist Clearing Strategy
- 1
Prepare Your Gear and Consumables
Bring
Silver weapons or a Draugr Fang with Poison Arrows, plus Fire Resistance Barley Wine if you have it. Eat Mountain food such as
Wolf Skewers,
Wolf Jerky, and
Onion Soup or
Eyescream, and enter with health above 180. Never wear Root armor: every piece is weak to Fire, which makes Cultist attacks even deadlier. - 2
Clear Bats and Ulvs First
Work through the natural cave sections first, eliminating Bats and
Ulvs. Use the
Stagbreaker or an AoE weapon against Bat swarms. Ulvs share the same poison weakness as Cultists, so Ooze Bombs work well against them too. Clear the area around Cultist doors so you never have to fight multiple enemy types at once. - 3
Approach Cultist Lairs Behind Wooden Doors
Wooden doors are your warning sign. Crouch before opening them. Red jute curtains inside often hide Cultists, so be cautious. If you spot a Cultist, try to sneak attack with a bow from the doorway. If you have Ooze Bombs, toss them through and close the door for a safe kill.
- 4
Use Doorways as Choke Points
Cultists generally will not follow you through doorways. Bait one with an arrow, retreat through the door and repeat. If you take heavy damage, fall back to a Standing Brazier for warmth and the Rested buff to regenerate before re-engaging.
- 5
Loot the Altar Rooms
After clearing the Cultists, thoroughly loot altar rooms. Smash tapestries for Fenris Hair, collect Fenris Claws from altar pillars, and grab Red Jute from destroyed curtains. Altar rooms can contain 0-4 tapestries with additional hair hanging beneath each one, plus 2-4 offerings of Claws or Hair on the altar itself. Break everything.
“The Cultist's Flames attack can hit through walls and cannot be blocked. No shield will save you. The only defense is to dodge or close the distance.
Cultist Drops and What They Are Used For
Every Cultist drops 1-2
Red Jute, guaranteed. It crafts decorative pieces such as the Red Jute Carpet and Red Jute Curtain, so treat it as a bonus rather than a reason to farm.
The Cultist Trophy
The real prize is the 10% Cultist Trophy. It is required for the Fenris Hood, the helmet of the Fenris set, so you cannot complete the set and get its bonus without one. It also works on an Item Stand or to program a Ballista to target Cultists.
Bad luck protection
With a 10% chance and rare one-time spawns, the trophy can be frustrating. Some players clear over 20 caves before seeing one; others get it in the first. After 50 kills you have a 99.48% chance of at least one.
If luck is against you, defeat Geirrhafa from Hildir's quest to unlock the "You get the chills..." raid, which sends Cultists to your base.

The Fenris Set: Why Cultists Matter for Your Build
Most players farm Cultists to finish the Fenris set. This Mountain-tier light armor increases movement speed instead of reducing it: +3% per piece, +9% for the full set. It is crafted at the
Workbench, not the Forge, and only the Fenris Hood needs the Cultist Trophy.
Armor and bonuses
Each piece has 10 armor at quality 1 and 16 at quality 4, so the full set goes from 30 to 48 armor. That is lower than Wolf armor, but you get:
- +9% movement speed instead of a penalty
- Frost resistance from the
Fenris Coat - The full set bonus, which boosts unarmed (fist) combat
The fist bonus pairs perfectly with Flesh Rippers, the claw weapon made from Frost Cave materials. The full Fenris set also grants fire resistance as part of its Fenris blessing set bonus, which halves Cultist fire damage. Without all three pieces, bring Fire Resistance Barley Wine.

Finding Cultists: Where They Spawn in Frost Caves
Frost Caves are dungeons found only in the Mountain biome. The entrance is a spiky rock formation with large blue icicles hanging from the mouth. Not every Mountain has one, so expect to explore.
Inside the cave
Cultists live in the worked-stone lair sections, always behind wooden doors, and red jute curtains often hide them. A cave can hold anywhere from zero to several, with up to three guarding an altar room. Altar rooms are the richest areas: Fenris Hair and Fenris Claw offerings sit on pedestals next to tapestries you can smash for more.
Other cave dangers and finds
- Bats in deep shafts
- Ulvs in icy corridors
- Rarely, a frozen lake guarded by one to three
Stone Golems, with a dead traveler's campfire holding a free
Fishing Rod and
Fishing Bait - In some caves, a Vegvisir that reveals Moder's location
A common mistake is entering Frost Caves with Iron gear and expecting an easy time. It is possible, but Silver weapons make Cultist fights much faster. Nothing from the caves is needed for Silver gear: find Silver veins on the Mountain surface with the
Wishbone and upgrade first. Do the same with food, switching to Wolf Skewers and Onion Soup before your first cave.

Cultist Lore: The Worshippers of Fenrir
Murals in the upper floors of Frost Caves show humanoid figures worshipping a giant wolf, and the deep altar rooms hold stone wolf busts. This suggests that Cultists, Ulvs and possibly
Fenrings were once Vikings transformed by devotion to Fenrir, the monstrous wolf of Norse myth.
In the myths, Fenrir was Loki's son and so feared that the gods chained him with a sword wedged in his jaws. At Ragnarok he breaks free and fights Odin. Crafting the Fenris set from his worshippers' materials means claiming a little of that dark power for yourself.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Cultists respawn in Frost Caves?
No. Cultists are one-time spawns inside Frost Caves. Once you kill them, they are gone permanently in that cave. You will need to find new Frost Caves in other Mountain biomes to encounter more Cultists.
What is the best way to farm Cultist Trophies?
Can you parry Cultist attacks?
You can parry the Fireclaw and Fireclaw Double melee attacks, though the parry window is shorter than you might expect. However, the Flames ranged attack cannot be blocked or parried at all. The safest approach is to dodge the Flames and parry only the melee swipes.
Is the Fenris Set better than Wolf Armor?
It depends on your playstyle. Wolf armor has higher armor values but slows you down. The Fenris set is lighter, gives +9% movement speed and Frost resistance from the coat, and its set bonus adds +15 Unarmed and fire resistance. For an evasive fist-weapon build the Fenris set is better; for tanking hits head-on,
Wolf armor wins.
