- Ulvs live only inside Frost Caves and Howling Caverns in the Mountains.
- They are glass cannons: big Slash hits, but only 50 health at 0-star.
- Use Poison (
Ooze Bombs,
Poison Arrows) and never Fire, which they very much resist. - Watch for the crouch (Bite) and the backward step (Slash).
- Each kill has a 50% chance at a
Wolf Fang, the key
Fang Spear material.
What Is an Ulv?
The first time something low to the ground rushes you on all fours in a Frost Cave, your heart rate spikes. That is an Ulv. Unlike
Fenrings, which stand upright and roam the mountainsides at night, Ulvs trot like wolves with a feral gait that is hard to track in dim light.
Why they are dangerous
Context is everything. You never meet an Ulv in the open where you can kite freely. Every fight happens in tight corridors, around blind corners and in dark rooms. They are fast, hit hard for their health and tend to strike while you are busy with Bats or a chest. Most Ulv deaths come from surprise, not combat difficulty.

Where to Find Ulvs
Ulvs spawn in two Mountain dungeons, and the variants differ.
Frost Caves
The common location. Entrances look like jagged rock formations with blue icicles hanging from the roof, like the maw of a beast. Inside, 0-star Ulvs spawn as one-time encounters alongside Bats,
Cultists and occasionally
Stone Golems.
The caves can run up to 60 meters deep, with vertical shafts, ice walls to break and Cultist lairs behind wooden doors. Ulvs appear in both the natural icy sections and the worked-stone corridors near Cultist territory.
Howling Caverns
A miniboss dungeon you locate with Hildir's map table. It holds only 1-star Ulvs, with double health and much harder hits, in large packs alongside swarms of Bats on the way to the miniboss Geirrhafa. The density is great for Wolf Fangs, but prepare for the difficulty spike.
When looking for Frost Cave entrances, run along the sides of Mountains rather than across the peaks. The entrances are built into cliff faces and are nearly invisible from above. Look for the distinctive blue icicle formations that hang down like teeth from a rock overhang.
Understanding Ulv Attack Patterns
Ulvs have two attacks, and reading them is the key to taking no damage.
Bite (5-second cooldown)
The faster attack. The Ulv crouches low, then swings upward to bite. The arc is tight and short, so it must get within about 1.5 meters to trigger it. The crouch is your tell: when its body drops, dodge or step back.
Slash (9-second cooldown)
Slower but wider. The Ulv steps backward, lifts both paws and slashes down across a wide vertical arc with more reach. The backward step is the giveaway. Dodge to the side rather than backing up, because the vertical coverage can still clip you.
A textbook glass cannon
Either hit can take a big chunk of your health, yet the Ulv dies to one or two solid hits from almost any
Silver-tier weapon. The real danger is an Ulv rushing you from behind while you fight a Cultist or a bat swarm.
“An Ulv does not need much health when a single Bite can rip away a third of yours. Respect the damage, kill it fast, and never let one sneak up on you in a corridor.
How to Fight Ulvs Effectively
- 1
Exploit Their Poison Weakness
Ulvs take 1.5x Poison damage, their biggest vulnerability. The best tool is the Ooze Bomb: toss one into a corridor and its 4-meter poison cloud can kill a 0-star Ulv before you swing a weapon. Poison Arrows from a
Huntsman Bow or Draugr Fang also work well, often finishing one in a single shot. Ooze Bombs are cheap, so stock up before a Frost Cave run. - 2
Use Silver Weapons for Clean Kills
Ulvs have no special Silver weakness, but Silver is the natural tier for Frost Caves. The
Silver Sword,
Silver Knife and Frostner all work well; Frostner's Frost and Spirit damage land at normal value and its knockback keeps them off you. The Silver Knife shines on sneak attacks, but Ulvs have sharp hearing and often detect you before you reach backstab range. - 3
Control the Engagement with Terrain
Frost Caves are full of uneven terrain, ledges, and narrow passages. Use this to your advantage. Ulvs, like many Valheim creatures, struggle with pathing on uneven ground. If you can position yourself on a slight elevation or across a narrow gap, you can safely pelt them with arrows while they struggle to reach you. Doorways in Cultist lairs are another natural chokepoint. Ulvs will often hesitate at doors, giving you free shots.
- 4
Never Use Fire Damage
A classic newcomer mistake. Ulvs are very resistant to Fire and take only a quarter of Fire damage, so do not waste
Fire Arrows on them. Switch to Poison, Silver or
Obsidian Arrows. Carrying a
Torch for light is fine, just do not rely on fire-based strategies.

Do not bring your tamed Wolves into Frost Caves expecting them to handle the Ulvs for you. Wolves struggle badly with dungeon navigation, and the tight corridors mean they will body-block your movement when you need to dodge. Fight Ulvs yourself and leave the wolf pack outside.
Ulv Drops and What They Are Used For
Ulvs drop two items. The Wolf Fang is the one that matters: a light, stackable material that feeds several Mountain-tier recipes.
- Wolf Fang: 1 at a 50% chance. Weighs 0.1 and stacks to 50.
Ulv Trophy: 10% chance. Mainly a wall decoration to prove you conquered the Frost Caves.
Where Wolf Fangs go
Wolves and Fenrings drop Wolf Fangs too, but Ulvs are an efficient source while you clear caves for
Fenris Hair and
Fenris Claws. Fangs are used for the Fang Spear,
Wolf Hide Trousers and the
Wolf Sight trinket. Fully upgrading the Fang Spear takes 16 Wolf Fangs (4 to craft, then 2, 4 and 6 for the upgrades).

Recommended Gear for Frost Cave Runs
Frost Caves were designed for post-Swamp difficulty. Walk in with fully upgraded Silver gear or Padded armor and you will steamroll everything, missing what makes the caves fun. The sweet spot is
Iron-tier and early Silver gear.
What to pack
- Armor: Iron or Root armor.
- Weapons: an
Iron Mace or early Silver weapon, plus a Huntsman Bow with Poison Arrows. - Frost protection: a
Frost Resistance Mead or
Wolf Fur Cape. Braziers keep you warm inside, but the trek to the entrance will kill you without it. - Ooze Bombs: a stack for the Ulvs.
- Pickaxe: for Stone Golems and ice walls.
Stagbreaker or
Iron Sledge: for Bat swarms in the vertical shafts.

The Lore Behind the Ulv
Ulvs belong to one of Valheim's best faction stories. Murals deep in Frost Caves tell of the Cult of the Wolf: Vikings who turned from Odin to venerate Fenris, the great wolf of Norse apocalypse myth. Through painful rituals, hinted at in the
Fenring Trophy description, they took on aspects of the wolf.
The cult hierarchy
- Cultists: the leaders, robed in crimson and granted fire powers.
- Ulvs: the chosen guardians, transformed into four-legged beasts to protect the caves and places of worship.
- Fenrings: the hunters and raiders patrolling the mountainsides above.
The name
Ulv comes from Old Norse "ulfr", meaning wolf. The word is still used in Norway and Denmark, but it became taboo in Sweden and was replaced with "varg".
Next time you clear a Frost Cave, study the stone etchings: humanoid figures worshipping a great wolf, the transformation rituals, and the altar with its stone wolf bust at the heart of the temple.
Ulv FAQ
Can you tame Ulvs?
No. Unlike Wolves, Ulvs cannot be tamed. They are permanently aggressive and will attack on sight. There is no feeding mechanic or taming process for them.
Do Ulvs respawn in Frost Caves?
No. Ulvs are one-time spawns in both Frost Caves and Howling Caverns, so a cleared cave stays clear. Find a new, unexplored Frost Cave for more. This is why Wolf Fangs can feel scarce when you are upgrading the Fang Spear.
What is the difference between an Ulv and a Fenring?
Fenrings are bipedal werewolves that spawn outdoors on Mountain surfaces at night. They stand upright and are more aggressive raiders. Ulvs are quadrupedal, lower to the ground, and found exclusively inside Frost Caves and Howling Caverns. Lore-wise, both are former Vikings who worshipped Fenris, but Ulvs serve as cave guardians while Fenrings are hunters. Both drop Wolf Fangs.
Are Ooze Bombs really worth bringing to Frost Caves?
Absolutely. One bomb creates a 4-meter poison cloud that lasts about 10 seconds, and since Ulvs take 1.5x Poison damage, a single throw into a corridor can kill a 0-star Ulv. They stack to 50, and a batch of 5 costs only 5 Leather Scraps, 5 Ooze and 3 Resin at a Workbench. There is no cheaper or more effective way to clear Ulvs.
