What Makes Stone Golems So Terrifying
Stone Golems are the most intimidating non-boss enemy in the Mountain biome. These huge, snow-covered stone humanoids with silver veins sit dormant among the rocks, disguised as ordinary boulders. The first time one wakes up beneath you while you are mining
Silver, your heart rate will spike.
They hit hard and shrug off most damage types, so the first fight feels overtuned. Veterans will tell you they are one of the most predictable enemies in the game once you learn their patterns.
Faction: use it against the Mountain
Stone Golems belong to the Forest monsters faction. They are hostile to Mountain creatures such as Wolves,
Drakes and
Fenrings, but not to Greydwarves or
Trolls. You can exploit this alignment, as later sections show.
Where they spawn
- Abandoned Cabins: rare, one-time spawns near cabins at around 100 meters altitude.
- Tall Mountains: common spawns at 120 meters and above, limited to one active Golem per spawn point (the key to the pit trap below).
When a Golem awakens, nearby players feel the screen shake, a brief warning that trouble is coming.

Two Variants, Two Fighting Styles
Roughly half of all Stone Golems have two sledge-style boulder fists, and the other half have a pointed spike arm. Each variant has two attacks, and every attack also deals heavy Chop and Pickaxe damage, which is why Golems flatten terrain and buildings. Knowing which variant you face changes your approach.
Sledge Golem
- Ground Slam: one arm raised and slammed down. It comes out fast with a short telegraph, and it is the attack you want to parry.
- Double Smash: both arms raised, with a long pause before the slam. The wind-up is so slow that veterans joke you could defeat Moder and come back before it lands. Just step away.
Spike Golem
- Spike Thrust: a straight-line jab with a very readable animation, the easier of the two to parry.
- Spike Sweep: a wide horizontal arc with a bigger hitbox. Roll through it or sprint away rather than parrying.
Both variants attack only when you are within 6 meters. The Spike Sweep has a 15-second cooldown; every other attack recharges in 8 seconds.
The punish window
Here is the insight most guides skip: both variants attack 2-3 times and then wander in a short circle. That wander phase is your punishment window. If you are not comfortable parrying, block or dodge the attacks and unload damage when the Golem walks away.

Best Weapons: Iron Mace vs. Pickaxe
The community is split, but the Iron Mace wins comfortably. The Pickaxe technically doubles its Pickaxe damage thanks to the Golem's weakness, but it is two-handed, so you give up blocking and parrying entirely. The Iron Mace deals pure Blunt damage at full power, swings faster and pairs with a shield.
With the Golem's stagger threshold at a third of its health, a parry followed by a few clean mace hits staggers it again, opening a window for more free hits. Two stagger cycles usually finish the fight.

Why other weapons struggle
- Swords and axes: Slash damage is halved.
- Bows, spears and Pickaxe pierce: Pierce damage is also halved.
- Frostner: looks ideal because it deals Blunt, but the Golem is immune to its Frost and Spirit damage, so only the Blunt portion lands.
- Porcupine: a solid choice for late-game players returning to the Mountains, since its Blunt component hits at full power.
The Iron Mace is crafted at a Forge (level 2) from 4
Wood, 20
Iron and 3
Leather Scraps, and upgrades to levels 2, 3 and 4 cost 10, 20 and 30 Iron. If you are mining Silver, you should already have Iron gear from the Swamp.

A common mistake is swinging your Iron Mace into the ground while fighting on uneven terrain. If your swing hits both the Golem and the ground, the damage is split between both targets. Always try to fight on level ground, and aim your swings slightly upward to ensure all damage connects with the Golem's body.
How to Kill a Stone Golem: The Parry Method
- 1
Prepare Your Loadout
Equip an Iron Mace and a Banded Shield (or
Silver Shield if you have one). Eat two health-focused foods and one stamina food; aim for at least 100-120 total HP for reliable parrying. Bring
Minor Healing Mead and
Minor Stamina Mead as backup. Activate the Bonemass Forsaken Power if you have it: its physical resistance takes a big chunk out of every Golem hit. - 2
Identify the Golem Variant
Before engaging, check whether it has two boulder fists (Sledge) or a pointed spike arm (Spike). Sledge Golems are slightly easier for the head-riding technique. Spike Golems have a more readable parry animation on their thrust attack. Either way, your strategy is the same: parry the quick attack, never the slow one.
- 3
Wait for the Quick Attack
Stay within 6 meters to trigger attacks. When you see the slow, telegraphed wind-up (Double Smash or Spike Sweep), simply sprint or roll away. When you see the quick attack (Ground Slam or Spike Thrust), raise your shield just as the attack is about to connect. The timing is later than you think; wait for the actual forward motion, not the wind-up.
- 4
Punish the Stagger
After a successful parry, the Golem staggers. Immediately swing your Iron Mace 3 times (the full combo). The third hit in the Iron Mace combo deals double damage, so always try to complete the full chain. After the stagger wears off, back away and wait for the next parry window. Two stagger cycles and your follow-up hits should bring the Golem down.
- 5
Loot and Move On
Collect 8-11 Crystal, 5-9 Stone and, with luck, a Stone Golem Trophy (5% drop rate). The Golem's spawn point will eventually produce a new one, so if you plan to mine nearby for a while, consider the pit trap instead of fighting respawns.

The Pit Trap: Why Smart Vikings Never Kill Stone Golems
The best Stone Golem strategy is often not killing them at all. Each common spawn point allows only one active Golem, so trapping one alive in a pit stops that spawn point producing new ones. Players report trapped Golems staying put for over 200 in-game days.
How to build the trap
- Run a short distance away. Golems are slow, so you can easily outpace them.
- Dig a hole straight down with your Pickaxe, at least 1.5 times your character's height. Go deeper if you can: the Sledge Golem's attacks reach surprisingly far downward.
- When the Golem approaches, mine the ground directly beneath it so it slides in.
- Sprint and jump out.
Alternatively, hook the Golem with an Abyssal Harpoon and drag it into a pre-dug pit. This is more reliable but needs
Chitin from the Ocean biome.
A free guard and farm
A trapped Golem keeps fighting for the Forest faction, attacking any Wolf, Drake or Fenring that wanders close. Players use them as free
Wolf Pelt and
Drake Trophy farms, and the Golem draws aggro from Mountain creatures while you mine Silver in peace.
Crystal Drops and What They Are Used For
Stone Golems are the most reliable renewable source of Crystal. If you would rather skip Golem fights, Crystal also grows in clusters inside Frost Caves and drops from
Frost Blobs (1 each).
Uses for Crystal
- Crystal Wall: transparent glass panels built at a Workbench, great for windows and greenhouses. They are fragile but do not take rain damage.
Crystal Battleaxe: a two-handed Forge (level 3) axe that adds Spirit damage and gives off light (recipe below).
Dvergr Lantern and
Crystal Heart: later-game crafts that also call for Crystal.
Crystal Battleaxe Recipe
The trophy
The
Stone Golem Trophy drops 5% of the time, so expect to kill around 20 Golems before you see one. Beyond decoration, it is what you need to craft the Crystal Heart trinket.
Advanced Tricks and Alternative Strategies
The Pickaxe Rodeo
- Find a sleeping Golem near a tall rock or ledge.
- Sprint-jump onto its head from above and start swinging your Pickaxe.
- Keep drifting in the direction the Golem walks to stay mounted.
- Save stamina so you can jump back on if you get bumped off.
There is a generous safe zone on top where most attacks cannot reach you. Spike Golems suit this best, because the Sledge Golem's Double Smash can knock you off.
Sneak attacks
Dormant Golems look like a cluster of oddly shaped boulders, slightly different from the surrounding rocks. Crouch, approach from behind and hit them during the wake-up animation with your Iron Mace for a 3x backstab. That is a massive head start.
Terrain and resources
- Golems cannot climb sheer cliffs, follow narrow paths or fit through one-Viking-wide trenches, so narrow switchback ramps keep them out of your mining pits.
- They cannot destroy Obsidian Deposits or Silver Veins, so your ore is safe even with a Golem raging next to it.
- Their attacks shatter rocks, so you can bait swings into nodes you want broken.
Turn them on Drakes
Lead a Golem into Drakes. They are natural enemies, so the Golem stops chasing you and fights the Drake, buying time to mine or escape.
The single biggest danger from Stone Golems is not their damage; it is their knockback on Mountain terrain. Getting launched off a cliff deals massive fall damage and can send you tumbling into a biome without Frost Resistance. Always fight on level ground, preferably on the flat areas near your mining site. If a Golem catches you on a slope, disengage and reposition rather than trying to fight at an angle.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you parry a Stone Golem with an Iron Buckler?
Yes, but it is tight. The
Iron Buckler has lower base block armor than the Banded Shield, but its much higher parry bonus gives it more armor when you parry successfully. Most players still find the Banded Shield (level 2-3) more forgiving. The Silver Shield makes it easier again once you have Silver. A tower shield can block (not parry) Golem attacks but gives no stagger window, so fights are slower.
Do Stone Golems respawn?
Yes, common Mountain spawns will produce new Stone Golems if the previous one is killed. The spawn point has a limit of 1 active Golem, which is why pit trapping is so effective: a living trapped Golem prevents the spawn from producing a replacement. The rare spawns near Abandoned Cabins are one-time only and do not respawn.
Is it worth farming Stone Golems for Crystal?
It depends on how much you need. For a few Crystal Walls, Frost Caves are easier. For larger amounts, such as the 10 Crystal for a Crystal Battleaxe or big building projects, farming Golems with the parry method is faster than exploring caves. Crystal is teleportable, so you can farm any Mountain and bring it home through a
Portal.
Can you tame a Stone Golem?
No. Stone Golems cannot be tamed. However, their Forest faction alignment means they will attack many Mountain creatures on sight, making a trapped Golem function as a sort of territorial guard. You can also harpoon them with the Abyssal Harpoon and drag them to specific locations for strategic positioning.
