Key takeaways
  • Any hit kills it: keep a bow drawn or a shield up whenever you cross the Plains.
  • Wait for the straight-line dive, then shoot, parry or swing. Do not sprint away and burn your stamina.
  • Wear the Root Harnesk: its Pierce resistance halves the sting.
  • Every kill drops a Needle for Needle Arrows and the Porcupine mace.
  • Protect Plains farms with walls topped by staggered beams, and keep your head below the wall line.

No creature in Valheim causes more rage-quits than the Deathsquito. This oversized mosquito greets you in the Plains and has killed more Vikings on their first visit than every Fuling village combined. It has only 10 HP, but its 90 Pierce sting can kill an unprepared player in one hit.

The good news: once you learn its pattern it is one of the most predictable enemies in the game, and every kill guarantees a Needle for top Plains ammunition and one of the tier's best weapons.

Understanding Deathsquito Behavior

When a Deathsquito spots you, it circles at a distance with its unmistakable buzz. It is not attacking yet, just picking an angle. Then it commits to a straight-line dive at your position. That dive is its sting, and it is the only attack it has.

Do not panic

New players hear the buzz and sprint in random directions. That burns stamina, so when the sting lands they have nothing left for blocking, healing or fighting back. Stand still, track it with your camera and prepare your counter. It will come to you in a straight line.

Watch, do not listen

The buzz is constant and does not change before the attack, so do not use it as a parry cue. Watch for the moment it stops circling and flies straight at you.

Elevation matters

Deathsquitos dive toward your current height. Stand on a hill above a wall and they fly over it to reach you; stay at ground level behind a wall and they slam into it and get stuck. Remember this when building Plains bases or farming Barley.

“

The Deathsquito is the only creature in Valheim where knowing how to fight it is more important than what gear you bring. With 10 HP, even a bare-fisted punch will kill it. The hard part is not panicking.

How to Kill Deathsquitos: Every Strategy Ranked

With 10 HP, Deathsquitos die to virtually any weapon or arrow. The challenge is landing your hit before they land theirs. Here are the most reliable approaches, ranked by consistency.

1. Bow (best overall)

Any bow works: even a Finewood Bow with Flinthead Arrows one-shots them. Nock an arrow, track the circling Deathsquito and release when it commits to the dive, aiming slightly ahead of its path. If you miss, you have about 10 seconds before it can sting again. Keep the bow in hand while crossing the Plains, not on your back.

2. Shield and melee (most consistent up close)

Raise your shield, wait for the dive, then block or parry and counter with any weapon. A parry interrupts it despite its stagger immunity, and one swing finishes it. Bucklers have the best parry bonus, so an Iron Buckler is ideal; the Bronze Buckler also works. Avoid tower shields: the block knockback pushes it out of reach of your counter.

3. Knife (high risk, high style)

A fast knife can kill it mid-dive if your timing is sharp. The slash swings right to left, so keep the Deathsquito slightly to your right as it comes in.

It needs no shield, which makes it popular for corpse runs, but swing a fraction late and you eat the full sting first. Only try it with enough health to survive one hit.

4. Atgeir (reach advantage)

The Atgeir's long reach and wide sweep work surprisingly well. A Bronze Atgeir can one-shot a Deathsquito before it reaches sting range, and the secondary spin covers a wide arc. A solid choice if you already use an Atgeir against Fulings.

Common Mistake

The number one mistake is sprinting away after getting stung. You burn all your stamina, cannot block or attack, and the Deathsquito catches you on its next pass anyway. Stay calm, drink a Medium Healing Mead if you have one, and track it with your camera for the next dive. It can only sting once every 10 seconds, so you have time to recover.

Armor and Damage Reduction Against Deathsquitos

Deathsquitos deal only Pierce damage, so the best armor piece against them is the Root Harnesk. Its Pierce resistance halves the sting from 90 to 45 before your armor even applies. Many players swap to it whenever they enter the Plains, whatever else they wear.

Getting a Root Harnesk

It is crafted at the Workbench from Root (dropped by Abominations in the Swamp), Ancient Bark and Deer Hide, so you can have it long before the Plains. The tradeoff is lower armor than Iron or Wolf gear and a weakness to Fire, but for Plains trips the Pierce resistance is worth it.

Other sets

If you arrive in Mountain gear, Wolf armor cuts the sting through raw armor value. The Fenris set gives less protection (48 armor fully upgraded) but +9% movement speed, which helps positioning. Either works; swap in the Root Harnesk for the best of both.

Veteran Tip

Swap your chest piece for the Root Harnesk when entering the Plains, even if you are wearing Wolf or Fenris Armor everywhere else. The Pierce resistance from the Root Harnesk is far more valuable against Deathsquitos (and Fuling Spears) than the extra armor from a matched set. Many veterans carry one in their inventory specifically for Plains trips.

Drops: Needles and the Deathsquito Trophy

Every Deathsquito drops exactly 1 Needle, which makes it one of the most reliable farming targets in the game. Needles weigh 0.5, stack to 50 and are teleportable, so carrying and portaling them home is easy. You can also find them in Plains chests in Fuling villages.

The Deathsquito Trophy is a 5% drop and one of the rarer trophies, so do not expect one quickly. Display it on an Item Stand.

What Needles craft

  • Needle Arrows: 4 Needles and 2 Feathers make 20, a direct upgrade from Obsidian Arrows.
  • Porcupine: a one-handed mace that carries you through the Plains and beyond.

Why the Porcupine is worth it

The Porcupine deals Blunt and Pierce damage, so it rarely hits a hard resistance, and it pairs with a shield. Upgrades cost 2, 4 and 6 Iron and the same in Needles, so crafting and upgrading to quality 4 costs 32 Iron and 17 Needles in total. It needs no Black Metal, so you can build it before you have a Blast Furnace.

Deathsquito-Proofing Your Plains Base

Barley and Flax need open sky, so you cannot just roof a Plains farm. Instead, exploit how Deathsquitos path around walls.

How they get over walls

A Deathsquito that hits a wall does not fly straight over. It follows the wall, scanning for an opening, and pops over once it finds the top edge. A wall with a clean top edge is eventually breached. A "fuzzy" top edge made of staggered beams with gaps confuses the AI, and it gives up.

Building a Deathsquito-Proof Wall

  1. 1

    Build the wall two high

Build your perimeter wall at least two walls high around the farm.

  2. 2

    Add staggered beams on top

Place 1x1 wood beams along the top in a staggered pattern with small gaps, then add a second row offset from the first. The AI reads walls, floors and roof pieces as solid, but not beams, so the irregular gaps hide the edge.

  3. 3

Keep solid supports to a minimum

Every solid piece on top makes the edge easier for the AI to read. Use as few as you can.

  4. 4

    Stay below the wall line

Keep your head below the top of the wall while farming. If you stand on raised ground, the Deathsquito dives over the wall to reach your height.

  5. 5

    Test it

Aggro a Deathsquito and watch it bounce off the wall before you trust the setup with your life.

Meta Strategy

If you die in the Plains and need to do a corpse run, do not go in naked. At minimum, bring a knife or bow and a handful of arrows. Sprinting to your grave without any way to fight back almost always results in a second death. If your corpse is in a dangerous spot, consider approaching from a different angle and trying to kite toward the Black Forest border, where the grave will be safer to recover.

Resistances and Damage Types

Deathsquitos take normal damage from Blunt, Slash, Pierce, Fire, Frost, Lightning and Poison, so no weapon type is better than another. They are immune to Spirit, Stagger, Chop and Pickaxe damage, which never matters because one hit is enough.

They also never spawn with stars, so every Deathsquito has the same 10 HP and 90 Pierce sting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I survive a Deathsquito sting at the start of the game?

It depends on your food and armor. With no armor and base health (25 HP), a sting kills you instantly. With Swamp or Mountain food giving 150+ health and reasonable armor, you can survive a hit and fight back. The Root Harnesk halves the sting thanks to its Pierce resistance.

Are Deathsquitos worth farming?

Absolutely. Every kill drops a Needle for Needle Arrows and the Porcupine mace, one of the best Plains weapons. Since Deathsquitos die in one hit, they are among the fastest materials to farm once you are comfortable fighting them.

Do Deathsquitos spawn at night?

Yes, Deathsquitos can spawn at any time of day or night in the Plains biome. They have no time-based spawn restrictions, so you should always be on guard when traversing the Plains.

Can I use a tower shield against Deathsquitos?

You can block the sting with a tower shield, but it is not ideal. Tower shields cause knockback on block, pushing the Deathsquito away before you can counter-attack. By the time you close the distance, it may already be circling for another pass. Bucklers and round shields are better because they allow an immediate counter-swing after a parry.
