What Is the Vile?
The Vile is one of Valheim's most elusive creatures. Added in the Call to Arms update, this undead bear roams the Plains only at night. If you have seen something in the dark Plains that looked like a
Lox but moved far too aggressively, you probably met one.
It is the undead counterpart to the Black Forest
Bear, but far stronger: more than double the health, resistance to most physical damage and attacks that hit well over 100. Its internal ID is "Unbjorn", loosely "undead bear" in Old Norse.
Why hunt it
Its exclusive drops, the Vile Ribcage and Vile Trophy, craft the Vilebone Set and
Vilebone Maulclaws, a glass cannon loadout for players who prefer dealing damage over absorbing it. Farming them is one of the most frustrating grinds in the game, so knowing how to find and fight the Vile saves hours.

Where to Find the Vile
Finding it is the hardest part. The Vile spawns anywhere in the Plains, only at night, at a "very rare" frequency with a limit of one active spawn. On a good night you might find one or two across an entire Plains biome.
A hunting routine
- Build a small outpost on the edge of a large Plains biome, ideally where it borders Black Forest or Swamp.
Portal in at dusk.- Run wide loops through open terrain. The Eikthyr power plus the Fenris armor set gives the speed to cover the most ground before dawn.
Some players report better luck near biome borders and Lox herds, but that is anecdotal: the Vile can appear on any Plains terrain. Keep moving, stay alert and expect several nights of hunting for a full set's worth of ribcages.
Build a small hunting perch or earthen blind near the center of a large Plains biome. Portal in at night and shoot from the high ground with a crossbow or
Draugr Fang. The Vile avoids fire sources within 3 meters, so a Campfire beside your perch adds an extra layer of safety if it gets too close.
How to Fight the Vile
The Vile shares the Bear's animation set, so if you have fought Bears you already know its patterns. It simply hits much harder and shrugs off conventional weapons. All five attacks run on short cooldowns.
Attack moveset
- Bite: a 4-meter forward lunge, its biggest Pierce hit.
- Claws: rears up and slams down with a deceptively long 5.5-meter arched hitbox.
- Swipe and Swipe Combo: two swipe variants that can chain into a two-hit combo.
- Slam: its most devastating move, hitting everything within 2.5 meters. Its longer 12-second cooldown gives you a big punish window after you dodge it.
Damage types that work
The Vile halves Blunt, Pierce, Slash and Frost, so normal melee and arrows deal half damage.
It takes 1.5x from Fire and Spirit, which makes
Fire Arrows and the
Staff of Embers your best options.
Frostner helps less than it looks: its Frost is resisted, and only its Spirit portion hits the weakness. Poison does nothing, so leave the
Poison Arrows at home.
Fire avoidance
The Vile turns and runs when it gets within 3 meters of a fire source such as a Campfire. It still attacks if you hold a
Torch, but it shifts direction at the last moment and many swipes miss. Not a winning strategy, but useful breathing room in an emergency.
Recommended Combat Strategy
- 1
Gear Up With Fire or Spirit Damage
Bring Fire Arrows, the Staff of Embers or another Fire or Spirit source. The Vile halves all standard physical damage, so conventional weapons make this a painfully slow fight, while Fire and Spirit deal 1.5x and roughly triple your effective damage compared with resisted hits.
- 2
Keep Your Distance and Kite
Most of the Vile's attacks have a 5-5.5 meter range with wide 45-degree arcs. Stay beyond that range and use a bow or crossbow to chip it down. If you prefer melee, sprint in after the Slam attack (12-second cooldown) for safe damage windows.
- 3
Watch for the Swipe Combo
The Vile can chain two swipes in rapid succession. Each hit is lighter than its big attacks, but taking both can stagger you and set up a Bite or Claws follow-up. Dodge backward rather than sideways to clear the wide arc.
- 4
Use the Fire Avoidance to Your Advantage
Place a campfire near your fighting position. If the Vile closes in and you need space, lead it toward the fire. It will break off its approach when it gets within 3 meters, giving you free shots while it repositions. This trick is especially useful for bow users.
“The Vile is the only creature in Valheim that you have to hunt in one of the game's deadliest biomes, at night, with no guaranteed spawn location. Getting the full Vilebone set is a badge of honor.
Vile Drops and Drop Rates
Every kill guarantees Bear Hide,
Bear Meat and 1-2 Vile Ribcages, with an 80% chance at
Rotten Meat. The Vile Trophy drops only 10% of the time, and since you need one for the
Vilebone Visage, it is the biggest bottleneck in the grind. Many players kill 10 or more Viles before seeing one.

How many kills you need
The full Vilebone Set at quality 1 needs 19 Bear Hide, 4 Vile Ribcages, 8 Linen Thread and 1 Vile Trophy. With average ribcage luck, plan for roughly 3-4 kills just for the ribcages, plus however many it takes for the trophy.
Bear Hide is shared with the regular Bear, which drops far more per kill. For extra hide, farm Bears in the Black Forest during the day instead of relying on Viles.
A common mistake is trying to farm Viles with standard weapons like the
Black Metal Sword or
Porcupine. Because the Vile resists Slash, Pierce, and Blunt at half damage, you will spend ages whittling down its 1,200 HP. Always bring Fire or Spirit damage. Frostner alone can cut your kill time dramatically.
The Vilebone Armor Set
The Vilebone Set is a Plains-tier armor set that trades raw defense for offense and regeneration. All three pieces are crafted at the Forge:
- Vilebone Visage (helmet)
Vilebone Cage (chest)
Vilebone Drapes (legs)
Armor and the set bonus
At quality 1 the set gives 48 armor, noticeably less than the heavier Padded armor, but with no movement penalty. Wearing all three grants Vilebone Wrath: +20% health regeneration, +40% stamina regeneration and +20% Blunt and Pierce damage.
The trade-off
You take 25% more damage from Blunt, Slash and Pierce. This is a true glass cannon: you bet that dodging, parrying and killing fast keep you alive better than armor. For experienced players it is very viable, since the stamina regen lets you dodge and attack relentlessly.
Maxing the set
At quality 4 the set reaches 66 armor. Maxing all three pieces takes 73 Bear Hide, 16 Vile Ribcages, 20 Linen Thread and 1 Vile Trophy in total, a serious investment of night hunts.

Vilebone Maulclaws and Best Weapon Pairings
The Vile Ribcage also crafts the Vilebone Maulclaws, two-handed fist weapons dealing mostly Pierce with some Slash. The primary combo is two hits, and the second strikes for double damage. The secondary kick has massive knockback and 6x stagger, enough to stagger most creatures, and the 6x backstab makes them devastating against unaware enemies.

Synergy with the set
The set's +20% Pierce bonus lines up with the Maulclaws' main damage type, making this arguably the strongest unarmed build at Plains tier. Add the stamina regen and you can chain combos and dodges far more aggressively than in heavy armor.
Other pairings
- Bows: the Pierce bonus applies to every arrow, so archers love this set.
- Spears: Pierce damage benefits directly.
- Porcupine: gains from both the Blunt and Pierce bonus.
Unique Behavior and Trivia
- Faction: the Vile belongs to the Plains monsters faction, so it ignores Fulings,
Deathsquitos and other Plains natives. It also leaves Bears alone despite their different faction, so you will never see Viles fighting wildlife.
Blueberries: like Bears, Viles eat Blueberries left on the ground, but they cannot be tamed. Feeding them does nothing else.- Regeneration: Bears and Viles recover full health in 50 minutes instead of the usual 60, so a Vile you disengage from heals faster than you might expect.
- No stars: 1-star and 2-star Viles do not spawn naturally, only through the developer console. Every Vile you meet is 0-star, so there are no bonus drops from starred versions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you tame the Vile?
No. While the Vile will eat Blueberries left on the ground, it cannot be tamed. This is purely cosmetic behavior inherited from the Bear's AI.
Does the Vile spawn during the day?
No. The Vile only spawns at night in the Plains. If you are exploring Plains during the daytime, you will never encounter one. Existing Viles may linger slightly past dawn, but new ones will not spawn.
Is the Vilebone Set worth farming?
If you enjoy aggressive, dodge-heavy playstyles, absolutely. The +20% damage bonuses and +40% stamina regen are powerful. The main concern is that by the time some players finish farming the trophy, they have already progressed to Mistlands-tier gear. Try to farm it when you first reach the Plains for maximum value.
What is the Vile's spawn ID for the developer console?
The Vile's spawn ID is "Unbjorn" and the trophy's item ID is "TrophyBjornUndead". These can be used with devcommands if you are testing builds or playing in creative mode.
